Members of Pakistan's spy agency are pressing Taliban field commanders to fight the U.S. and its allies in Afghanistan, U.S. officials and Afghan militants have told The Wall Street Journal, a development that undercuts a key element of the Pentagon's strategy for ending the war.
The explosive accusation is the strongest yet in a series of U.S. criticisms of Pakistan, and shows a deteriorating relationship with an essential ally in the Afghan campaign. The U.S. has provided billions of dollars in military and development aid to Pakistan for its support.
The U.S. and Afghanistan have sought to persuade midlevel Taliban commanders to lay down their weapons in exchange for jobs or cash. The most recent Afghan effort at starting a peace process took place this week in Kabul.
But few Taliban have given up the fight, officials say. Some Taliban commanders and U.S. officials say militant leaders are being pressured by officers from Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence agency not to surrender.
U.S. officials say they have heard similar reports from captured militants and those negotiating to lay down their arms.

MIRAMSHAH: US drones carried out two attacks in North Waziristan on Wednesday, killing 11 suspected militants, sources said.
Six militants were killed and two others injured when two missiles fired by an unmanned aircraft slammed into a house in the Miramshah Bazaar, they said.
Six mutilated bodies and two injured persons were pulled out from the rubbles of the house which had caught fire after the strike.
The injured were taken to the agency headquarters hospital in Miramshah.
The sources said that those killed were local militants. (According to AFP, three of the militants killed in the attack belonged to the Haqqani network. A security official said the missiles hit a compound where foreign militants are believed to have hatched a plan to launch Mumbai-style attacks in European cities.)
Late on Wednesday night, a US drone targeted a house in Hurmaz village, killing five suspected militants. Two missiles hit the house owned by Qasim Khan, a local tribesman.

Thai bomb-making site searched after fatal explosion

They say they have found other bomb making equipment and weapons in the wreckage.
The bomb exploded on the second storey apartment of the building, which was in a provinhe attacks of recent months are politically motivated.
The police suspect the incident may be connected to other small bomb attacks in and around the Thai capital.

(Reuters) - Representatives of the Taliban and President Hamid Karzai's government have started secret talks to negotiate an end to the war in Afghanistan, the Washington Post reported on Tuesday, citing Afghan and Arab sources.
The sources, who were not named by the Post, were quoted as saying they believe the Taliban representatives are authorized to speak for the Quetta Shura, the Afghan Taliban organization based in Pakistan, and its leader, Mohammad Omar.
The sources quoted by the Post stressed that the current discussions are in the preliminary stages. The newspaper said the talks followed inconclusive meetings hosted by Saudi Arabia that wrapped up more than a year ago.

French police have arrested 12 people in two separate counterterrorism raids, amid a state of high alert for attacks in the country.
Nine people arrested in Marseille, the southern port city, on Tuesday morning were being investigated for suspected links to a "terrorist enterprise", police said.
Weapons including a Kalashnikov rifle, a pump action shotgun and ammunition were also seized in the raid, an official was quoted by the AFP news agency as saying.
Another three men were arrested in Marseille and Bordeaux, in France's southwest, on alleged ties to a group recruiting fighters for Afghanistan.
The trio were linked to Ryad Hannouni, a Frenchman arrested in the Italian city of Naples last weekend and suspected of being connected to al-Qaeda fighters, police said.

New York (CNN) -- A 30-year-old Pakistani-American was sentenced to life in prison Tuesday for attempting to detonate a vehicle bomb in Times Square this year.
Faisal Shahzad was defiant before a judge sentenced him Tuesday, saying "the defeat of the U.S. is imminent."
Shahzad pleaded guilty in June to all 10 counts in an indictment against him. At the time, he told the court, "I want to plead guilty 100 times because unless the United States pulls out of Afghanistan and Iraq, until they stop drone strikes in Somalia, Pakistan and Yemen and stop attacking Muslim lands, we will attack the United States and be out to get them."
Charges against Shahzad included attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction, conspiracy and attempt to commit international terrorism, among others, authorities have said.

Gunmen attacked fuel tankers in Islamabad on Monday transporting fuel to coalition troops in Afghanistan, police said, in a move likely to delay the reopening of a supply route through Pakistan.
“Gunmen opened fire and then set on fire tankers parked on the roadside. It’s a big fire. We’re trying to control it,” Omar Hayat, a senior police officer, told Reuters.
Pakistan will only reopen a supply route for coalition troops in Afghanistan, which the government shut down last week in protest at incursions by alliance helicopters, once public anger eases and security improves, the foreign ministry said on Sunday

The German president has urged his people to recognise that the religion of Islam and its followers have a legitimate place in Germany after a recent spike in anti-Muslim sentiment in the country.
Christian Wulff, who as president is considered a moral authority for the country, issued the statement on Sunday during a speech celebrating two decades of the country's reunification.
"Christianity doubtless belongs in Germany. Judaism belongs doubtless in Germany. That is our Judeo-Christian history. But by now, Islam also belongs in Germany," Wulff told an audience in the northern city of Bremen.
"First and foremost, we need adopt a clear stance: an understanding that for Germany, belonging is not restricted to a passport, a family history, or a religion," he said.
Wulff's speech was part of nationwide festivities marking reunification of the country's east and west in 1990, after Germany spent a half-century divided into two countries following defeat in the Second World War.

Wilders, who has 24-hour police guard because of death threats he has received, is charged on three counts of inciting hate and discrimination against Muslims in comments to the media and for insulting Muslims by comparing the Islamic faith to Nazism.
"I have said what I have said and I will not take one word back," Wilders said at the start of the hearing as he told the court he would invoke his right to remain silent.
The presiding judge said Wilders has been accused by others of avoiding engaging in debate and that it appeared he was doing the same again today. "The fact that we will keep asking you questions is not to pester you," the judge said.
Wilders' lawyer said the judge's comments could be construed as bias, prompting the court to adjourn until 6 a.m. ET so that new judges could be put in place to hear the defense's concerns.

TEHRAN, Iran – Iran's president Sunday called for U.S. leaders to be "buried" in response to what he says are American threats of military attack against Tehran's nuclear program.
Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is known for brash rhetoric in addressing the West, but in a speech Sunday he went a step further using a deeply offensive insult in response to U.S. statements that the military option against Iran is still on the table.
"May the undertaker bury you, your table and your body, which has soiled the world," he said using language in Iran reserved for hated enemies.
Several top U.S. officials including Adm. Mike Mullen, chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff have said in recent months that the military option remains on the table and there is a plan to attack Iran, although a military strike has been described as a bad idea.
The crowd of military men and clerics in the town of Hashtgerd just west of the capital chuckled at the president's insult and applauded.

Unidentified men on foot threw the grenade from the edge of a square where people had gathered on a warm autumn night in the municipality of Guadalupe, which is part of Monterrey, police said. Four children were among the injured.
"There was a loud explosion and people started screaming and running," a witness, who declined to give her name, told local radio.
The explosion was the fourth from a grenade during the weekend in Monterrey, one of Latin America's premier business cities. No one was injured in the earlier attacks.

CIUDAD JUAREZ, Mexico -- Mexican officials say a shooting attack has killed a policeman in the border city of Ciudad Juarez. The death raises the number of officers killed in the drug violence-plagued city this year to 102.
State prosecutors say Friday's attack on a police station also wounded two officers.
Arturo Sandoval, a spokesman for Chihuahua state prosecutors, says attacks on law enforcement in Ciudad Juarez this year have killed 44 city officers, 21 state officers, 29 federal policemen, three transit officers, three prison officers and two investigators for prosecutors.
But the latest shooting also came as Mexico's government said organized crime-related killings have fallen so far in September compared to previous months. Angered by repeated incursions by NATO helicopters over the past week, Pakistan blocked a supply route for coalition troops in Afghanistan after one such strike killed three Pakistani soldiers on Thursday in the northwestern Kurram region.
Taliban militants threatened to attack more tankers carrying fuel to Afghanistan over that route after three dozen of the vehicles were set on fire in south Pakistan on Friday.

The NASA chief who caused an uproar over the summer when he said outreach to the Muslim world might be his "foremost" priority has embarked on a trip this weekend
to Saudi Arabia.
A NASA spokesman said the visit is part of a multicountry tour. Administrator Charles Bolden and a delegation of several other NASA officials arrive in Saudi Arabia on Friday following a trip to Prague. From the Middle East, they will head next to Nepal where Bolden will give a keynote address at a climate change conference.
Though Bolden's comments about Muslim outreach earlier raised concerns that the White House was squeezing him into an out-of-place diplomatic role, NASA spokesman John Yembrick said the trip "was not initiated" by either the White House or the State Department.
"This trip, including the visit to Saudi Arabia, is driven by specific, appropriate agency-level objectives," he said in an e-mail.

Electronic Arts Inc. will no longer allow gamers to play the newest edition of its military-themed video game "Medal of Honor" as Taliban fighters "shooting" U.S. and NATO troops in Afghanistan, the video game publisher said Friday.
In a posting on the company's "Medal of Honor" blog, EA said that it is renaming the "Taliban" team "Opposing Force" in the wake of concerns voiced by friends and families of soldiers who have died.
The option to play as the Taliban was to be included in the multiplayer mode of "Medal of Honor" that is coming out Oct. 12.
The game is set in modern Afghanistan, where some 140,000 U.S. and NATO troops are fighting the Taliban. The story is told through a small group of characters known as "Tier 1" operators, elite fighters who take their orders directly from the president and defense secretary.

Dearborn Police Chief Ron Haddad said today he regrets that a Muslim leader died in Dearborn during a shootout with FBI agents.
But he supports the view of the state Attorney General report released Thursday that said no state laws were broken in the Oct. 28 shooting of Imam Luqman Ameen Abdullah in Dearborn.
“The unnatural loss of life under any circumstances is profoundly regrettable and this case is no different,” said Chief Haddad in a statement. “Imam Luqman Abdullah had family, friends, and a religious following who have all been impacted by this event.”
At the same time, he said Abdullah caused his own death. The Dearborn police department interviewed 85 witnesses and FBI agents in their own investigation.
“It is important to note that four out of five of the defendants in the warehouse surrendered without incident and were not injured,” the city of Dearborn said. “It is clear that the decisions made by Imam Luqman Abdullah, when confronted by the arresting authorities on that day, put into action a series of events that ultimately lead to his death. Careful review of the facts have revealed that Imam Luqman Abdullah fired three shots in the direction of agents, which resulted in the death of an FBI K-9 (dog) prior to any agents returning fire.”

Iran's elite Revolutionary Guards said on Sunday they had killed the "main elements" behind a September bombing in northwestern Iran, in an area near the Iran-Iraq border, that had killed 12 people and injured 80.
The blast took place during an annual military parade in the city of Mahabad. Iranian authorities blamed it on "anti-revolutionary" militants backed by the United States and Israel.
"The perpetrators of this assassination were killed on Iraqi soil and security forces are still perusing evidence to identify the architects of this act of terrorism," lawmaker Abdol Mohammad Baba Ahmadi Milani was quoted as saying by the website of Iran's English-language state-run Press TV.
The lawmaker did not give further details on the operation but said video of it would soon be released.
