Truckloads of Four Loko and other alcohol-laced energy drinks are being recycled into ethanol and other products after federal authorities told manufacturers the beverages were dangerous and caused users to become "wide-awake drunk."
Wholesalers from Virginia, North Carolina, Maryland and other East Coast states started sending cases of the high-alcohol, caffeinated malt beverages to MXI Environmental Services in Virginia after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced a crackdown on the sale of such beverages in November.

A suspected U.S. drone fired four missiles at a vehicle in a lawless area of northwestern Pakistan near the Afghan border Friday, killing six alleged militants, intelligence officials said.
The U.S. has dramatically stepped up such attacks in the past year in an attempt to kill Taliban militants who use Pakistani territory to launch attacks against foreign troops in Afghanistan.

(Reuters) - A suicide attack inside a public bathhouse in Afghanistan's southern Kandahar province on Friday has killed 17 people, including a police commander, and wounded 21 others, officials said.
Violence is at its worst in Afghanistan since 2001, with record casualties on all sides of the conflict and the insurgency spreading from traditional strongholds in the south and east into once-peaceful areas in the north and south.
Zalmai Ayoubi, spokesman for the governor of Kandahar, said the target of the raid, which took place in the town of Spin Boldak on the Pakistani border, was the police commander who was bathing at the time of the attack.
"This brutal and inhumane act was the work of the enemies of Islam and humanity," he said.

A rare Siberian tiger attacked and killed a tour bus driver in northern China while the man's horrified passengers watched, Chinese media reported.
The tiger pounced on driver Jin Shijun and dragged him into the forest after he got out to check on his bus, which was stuck in the snow at the world's largest Siberian tiger breeding base in the northern province of Heilongjiang, the official Xinhua News Agency said.
The bus was full of tourists visiting the breeding center, and Jin broke safety guidelines by leaving the vehicle, the report said. Park employees tried to distract the tiger with firecrackers and tranquilizer darts, but when they managed to get to Jin, the driver was already dead.

Iranian authorities have detained a 55-year-old American woman on spying charges, a state-owned newspaper reported Thursday.
The daily IRAN said Hall Talayan had spying equipment hidden on her body when customs authorities detained her in the border town of Nordouz, 370 miles northwest of the capital Tehran. The report said Talayan arrived in Iran from neighboring Armenia without a visa. It did not say when she was detained.
Talayan is the fourth American Iran has arrested and accused of spying in less than two years.

Ishaq was reportedly attending a friend's wedding reception with his third wife when his first two spouses, identified as Mehvish and Uzma, arrived with a score to settle, according to The Telegraph.
The wives showed up with relatives and reportedly began overturning tables and threatening Ishaq's life, then attacked their husband with their shoes until police hauled them away.
Uzma told the press that her husband deserved to be beaten.
"We know that he is trying to marry a fifth time, and he should be publicly humiliated for his behavior," she reportedly stated.
But Ishaq says the number of his wives has been greatly exaggerated -- adding that his first two wives have filed for divorce and are trying to force him to sell his home. He called their accusations "a blatant lie."

(Reuters) - More than 200 Chinese children have been poisoned by lead from battery plants located too close to houses in the east of the country, state media said on Thursday, the latest in a string of heavy metal pollution cases.
After tests last month showed three children in Gaohe in Anhui province had elevated levels of lead in their blood, 280 others were subsequently checked, more than 200 of whom were found to have been poisoned, Xinhua news agency said.
Authorities have now closed both battery plants blamed for the poisoning, the report said.
One of the plants was separated from residences in Gaohe by only a narrow road, it added, in contravention of environmental protection guidelines.
Some of the children affected were just a few months old, the official news agency said.
"When she was a baby, she stayed with my in-laws in Changsha, of the central Hunan Province, and was perfectly healthy. She's been in Gaohe town for just a few months," resident Jiang Feng told Xinhua of her poisoned child.

BEIJING—The first clear pictures of what appears to be a Chinese stealth fighter prototype have been published online
, highlighting China's military buildup just days before U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates heads to Bejiing to try to repair defense ties.
The photographs, published on several unofficial Chinese and foreign defense-related websites, appear to show a J-20 prototype making a high-speed taxi test—usually one of the last steps before an aircraft makes its first flight—according to experts on aviation and China's military.
The exact origin of the photographs is unclear, although they appear to have been taken by Chinese enthusiasts from the grounds of or around the Chengdu Aircraft Design Institute in western China, where the J-20 is in development. A few experts have suggested that the pictured aircraft is a mock-up, rather than a functioning prototype of a stealth fighter—so-called because it is designed to evade detection by radar and infrared sensors.
But many more experts say they believe the pictures and the aircraft are authentic, giving the strongest indication yet that Beijing is making faster-than-expected progress in developing a rival to the U.S. F-22—the world's only fully operational stealth fighter.

Hundreds of Facebook users welcomed the killing of liberal Pakistani politician Salman Taseer as a strike against reformers of the country's tight blasphemy laws. The Punjab governor was shot on Tuesday by one of his guards, 26-year-old Mumtaz Qadri, who confessed to the murder because of Taseer's
vocal opposition to the law that was recently used to sentence a Christian woman to death.
Analysts say the assassination underscores how deeply religious extremism has penetrated Pakistan's conservative society, with even the Internet-literate elite resorting to Facebook to rally support for the killer.
Nearly 2,000 Facebook users joined one group on the social networking site praising Qadri, and dozens of "fans" joined other pages set up in Qadri's honour in the hours after the shooting.
All the pages had been removed by Wednesday. Facebook was not immediately reachable for comment. But other private account holders used their Facebook status updates to make comments such as: "We salute you Mumtaz Qadri," "thank God he (Taseer) is not alive (any) more" and praise for the attacker as "a soldier of Islam".
In a sign of mainstream media opposition, Pakistan's leading Urdu-language newspaper, Jang, ran a front-page story declaring: "There should be no funeral for Salman Taseer and no condemnation for his death."

(Reuters) - Prince Alireza Pahlavi, younger son of the late Shah of Iran, committed suicide on Tuesday in Boston, according to his brother.
"It is with immense grief that we would like to inform our compatriots of the passing away of Prince Alireza Pahlavi," Reza Pahlavi, the Shah's older son, said on his website, rezapahlavi.org.
Pahlavi, 44, took his life early on Tuesday at his Boston home "plunging his family and friends into great sorrow," the note said.
It said he struggled for years to overcome depression over the fate of Iran and the loss of his father and sister.

Iran confirms inviting world powers to visit nuclear sites

TEHERAN, Iran — Iran on Tuesday confirmed it has invited representatives of world powers and its allies among the Arab and developing world to tour its nuclear sites.
Foreign ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast said the invitation went to "the EU, the non-aligned movement and representatives from 5+1 countries."
The "5+1" countries are the six world powers engaged in negotiations with Iran over its nuclear program — the United States, Britain, France, Russia , China and Germany.
He said the invitation to visit is an indication of his country's "good will" regarding its nuclear program.

Mexico plans a shake-up of its corruption-ridden immigration institute, officials said, after a year that saw some of the worst atrocities against illegal migrants trekking through the country — including the mass slaughter of 72 Central and South Americans trying to reach the United States.
The dismissals early this week will include several top directors of the National Institute for Migration, according to two government officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the decision has not been made public.
The government of President Felipe Calderon also plans to reform practices that have led to omissions, oversights and acts of corruption, though the officials didn't provide details.

PHOENIX -- An Iraqi immigrant accused of killing his daughter because he believed she was too Westernized goes on trial this month in Arizona in a case that raised awareness about incidents of so-called "honor killings" in the U.S.
Faleh Hassan Almaleki, 50, faces life in prison if convicted. In October 2009, he slammed his Jeep into his daughter, Noor Almaleki, 20, prosecutors said.
The woman, who longed to live a normal American life, was in a coma for two weeks before succumbing to her injuries, in a case that caused outrage from people nationwide.
Faleh Almaleki moved his family from Iraq to the Phoenix suburb of Glendale in the mid-1990s. He and Noor Almaleki had a tumultuous relationship, according to police and court records, and her close friends.
At 17, she refused to enter into an arranged marriage in Iraq, enraging her father, according to a court document filed by prosecutors.

More than 1,000 dead birds fall from sky in Ark.
BEEBE, Ark. (AP) — Wildlife officials are trying to determine what caused more than 1,000 black birds to die and fall from the sky over an Arkansas town.
The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission said Saturday that it began receiving reports about the dead birds about 11:30 p.m. the previous night. The birds fell over a 1-mile area of Beebe, and an aerial survey indicated that no other dead birds were found outside of that area.
Commission ornithologist Karen Rowe said the he birds showed physical trauma, and she speculated that "the flock could have been hit by lightning or high-altitude hail."

The embattled border city of Ciudad Juarez had its bloodiest year ever with 3,111 people killed in drug violence, an official said Saturday.
The city across from El Paso, Texas, has seen its homicide rate soar to one of the highest in the world since vicious turf battles broke out between gangs representing the Juarez and Sinaloa cartels in 2008.
That year, 1,587 people were killed in drug violence, and the toll increased to 2,643 in 2009.
Ciudad Juarez's bloodiest month last year was October, when 359 people were killed, said Arturo Sandoval, a spokesman for prosecutors in Chihuahua state, where the city is located

The blast did not originate in any of the cars that were destroyed, a ministry statement said. "It is likely that the device which exploded was carried by a suicide bomber who died among others," it added.
The circumstances of this and other recent attacks "clearly indicates that foreign elements undertook planning and execution," said the statement, carried by the official news agency.

(Reuters) - Suspected U.S. drone aircraft strikes killed at least 11 Muslim militants in Pakistan on Saturday, suggesting there will no letup this year in a campaign Washington says is hurting al Qaeda-linked groups.
The attacks by unmanned aircraft in the North Waziristan region -- a sanctuary for al Qaeda and Taliban militants -- came after five militants were killed in a similar strike in the same region late on Friday.
