Pearl Harbor attack remembered at 70th anniversary

I ran into a WWII vet yesterday at my local gas station ( he had one of those Michigan License plates that said so ), a very nice old guy.
The shock on his face when I walked past him to pay for my gas and I thanked him for serving our country.
He said people never thank him...
Now I must go to work, (for a Japanese Company).
Boston.com
Hawaii—The Dec. 7, 1941, bombing of Pearl Harbor and those who lost their lives that day are being remembered Wednesday on the 70th anniversary of the Japanese attack that brought the U.S. into World War II.
About 120 survivors will join Navy Secretary Ray Mabus, military leaders and civilians to observe a moment of silence in Pearl Harbor at 7:55 a.m. Hawaii time -- the moment the attack began seven decades ago.
About 3,000 people are expected to attend the event held each year at a site overlooking the sunken USS Arizona and the white memorial that straddles the battleship.

Blasts kill scores as Afghans mark holy day
That will teach em!
Filthy Muslims trying to celebrate a Muslim holiday!
How dare they, they should have known they were not the right kind of Muslims!
Islam, the religion of Piece through suicide Bombings.
CBS News
A suicide bomber attacked a shrine in Kabul as hundreds of Shiite worshipers flocked to the site to mark a holy day, leaving at least 48 people dead and dozens more injured, according to Afghan officials.
Afghan police and military officials later reported at least two more blasts around the nation, one in the northern province of Mazar-e-Sharif and another in Kandahar, once a stronghold of the Taliban, south of the capital.
Hashmatullah Stanekzai, a spokesman for Kabul police, says the blast at midday on Tuesday occurred at Abul Fazel shrine in the center of the Afghan capital. Afghans were gathered at the shrine for Ashoura, the Shiite Muslim holiday marking the death of Hussein, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad.

Massive WWII Bomb Succesfully Defused in Germany
An Extreme evacuation, for a big bomb.
Foxnews
A massive British World War II-era bomb that triggered the evacuation of about half of the 107,000 residents of Germany's western city of Koblenz was successfully defused Sunday, authorities said.
It was one of Germany's biggest bomb-related evacuations since the war ended with some 2,500 police officers, firefighters and paramedics on duty across the city to secure the operation.
Experts successfully defused the British 1.8 ton bomb and a 275-pound U.S. bomb that had been discovered last month after the Rhine river's water level fell significantly due to a prolonged lack of rain, said Heiko Breitbarth, a spokesman for Koblenz's firefighters.
Liberal Youth Behind Revolution 'Decimated' in Free Egyptian Elections
Duh! did anyone really think that the hardline extremists in Egypt would let the young people that started the whole protest and uprising, have a say in any of Egypts future?
If you haven't traveled to Egypt to see the Pyramids or whatever, you may never do it now.
Foxnews
Egypt's top reformist leader has said the liberal youth behind the country's uprising have been "decimated" in parliamentary elections dominated by Islamists and expressed concern about the rise of hard-line religious elements advocating extremist ideas such as banning women from driving.
Mohamed ElBaradei, a Nobel Prize laureate and possible presidential candidate, said Sunday he hopes moderate Islamists will rein in the extremists and send a reassuring message to the world that Egypt will not go down an ultraconservative religious path.
"The youth feel let down. They don't feel that any of the revolution's goals have been achieved," ElBaradei told The Associated Press in an interview on the same day electoral authorities announced that Islamist parties captured an overwhelming majority of votes in the first round of elections last week. "They got decimated," he said, adding the youth failed to unify and form "one essential critical mass."

Japan stricken nuke plant leaks radioactive water
Good thing I do not like Sea Food.
Washington post
Japan’s crippled nuclear power plant leaked about 45 tons of highly radioactive water from a purification device over the weekend, its operator said, and some may have drained into the ocean.
The leak is a reminder of the difficulties facing Tokyo Electric Power Co. as it tries to meet its goal of bringing the tsunami-damaged Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant to a cold shutdown by year’s end.
A pool of radioactive water was discovered midday Sunday around a decontamination device, TEPCO said in a statement on its website. After the equipment was turned off, the leak appeared to stop. Later, workers found a crack in a concrete barrier leaking the contaminated water into a gutter that leads to the ocean.
TEPCO estimated that about 300 liters leaked out before the crack was blocked with sandbags.
Officials were checking whether any water had reached the nearby ocean.

Iran Makes New Claim It Downed U.S. Drone
If the drone that went down is an RQ-170, and if it is largely, or partially, intact, it is possible that the technological secrets of the advanced aircraft could be compromised.
Not good, but I don't think Iran is smart enough to do anything with the technology in the RQ-170 within the next 10-20 years or so; they just ain't that bright.
the wall street journal
Iran said on Sunday that it shot down a U.S. stealth drone near the country's eastern border, but U.S. officials in Afghanistan said the craft could instead be an unmanned reconnaissance plane that veered off course and crashed last week.
Iran's official Islamic Republic News Agency quoted a military official who said Tehran had downed an RQ-170 Sentinel, the U.S. Air Force's stealth drone.
U.S. and NATO officials wouldn't say what kind of American drone had disappeared, but U.S. officials said there was no indication that the aircraft had been shot down by the Iranians. One American official said the drone likely suffered from a mechanical failure.
American officials said they believe that after the remote pilots lost control of the aircraft, the drone crashed in an unknown location.

Iran blast completely destroyed major missile-testing site
Always good news to hear that Iran has some problems, their missile making facility was leveled last month buy a Mysterious explosion.
That will set them back in that area for awhile.
Haaretz
A recent explosion at a military base near Tehran was a major setback for Iran's long-range missile program and completely destroyed the base, according to American and Israeli intelligence officials, the New York Times reported on Monday.
The officials said that surveillance photos showed that the Iranian base was a central testing center for advanced solid-fuel missiles, which are better equipped than older, liquid-fuel designs to carry warheads long distances.
According to the report, satellite photos taken after the blast show that the base was almost completely destroyed, which amounts to a serious setback to Tehran's missile development, intelligence officials said.

'Muslim Brotherhood wins 40%, Salafists 20% of Egypt vote'
Well Awesome, Egypt has had their revolution and have gotten rid of their "Dictator" and have now had their fair and free elections !
So who were the big winners...
The Muslim Brotherhood and the Al-Nour Salafist party.
Who is the Muslim Brotherhood...
Check out the links Here, And Here And Here
And How about those Salafists?
Here And Here
But many of the young people who took to the streets early this year now fear their revolution risks being stolen, either by the army rulers or by well-organized Islamist parties.
The Jerusalem Post
The Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood's Justice and Peace party won 40 percent of the vote in Egypt's elections, according to Arab media reports of the results published on Saturday.
With 20% of the vote, the Salafist party al-Nour took the second-highest number of votes, al-Quds al-Arabi and al-Hayat reported. Al-Quds al-Arabi reported that liberal parties took 15% of the vote. The Jerusalem Post could not independently verify the reports...
The Muslim Brotherhood, banned but semi-tolerated under Mubarak, says its FJP expects to win 43 percent of party list votes in the first stage, building on the Islamist group's decades of grassroots social and religious work.
But the Brotherhood's website also forecast that the Salafi al-Nour party would gain 30 percent of the vote, a shock for some Egyptians, especially minority Christian Copts, who fear it will try to impose strict Islamic codes on society.
So much for taking that trip to Egypt to see the Pyramids

Good, get this bullshit over with so Iraq can fall back into turmoil.
Foxnews
The U.S. military says it has handed over Camp Victory, a sprawling base at the edge of Baghdad that used to be the headquarters for the U.S. military, to the Iraqi government.
The handover of the sprawling complex of grandiose former palaces of Saddam Hussein, encircled by 27 miles of blast walls, comes as American troops prepare to pull out by the end of the month after nearly nine years.

Pakistan planes would have engaged NATO in attack
If the Pakistani Air Force could have pulled their heads out of each others ass's long enough to get in the air, they would have met the same fate as of those on the ground...Death.
(Reuters) - Pakistan's military said on Friday a communications breakdown prevented its air force from engaging NATO aircraft when they attacked two border outposts and killed 24 Pakistani soldiers...
In a statement on its public relations website, Pakistan's military, which sets foreign and security policy, said that its response to the NATO strike could have been more effective had it been able to scramble its aircraft in time.
"The response could have been more effective if PAF (Pakistan Air Force) had also joined in. However, it was no fault of PAF," the statement said.
"The timely decision could not be taken due to breakdown of communication with the affected posts and, therefore, lack of clarity of situation, at various levels, including the Corps Headquarters and GHQ (General Headquarters)."

Iraq bomb, gun attacks kill 17
Yeah, Iraq is not going to be a peaceful place in 2012.
Muslims killing Muslims, that will be Iraq's theme for the new year.
Islam, the religion of "Oh, you don't support Al Qaida, and all other Islamic radicals...We are going to kill you now"
CBS news
Two separate attacks killed 17 people on Thursday in a northeastern Iraqi province that was once an al Qaeda stronghold, Iraqi officials said.
The marketplace car bombing and the assault on the home of an anti-al Qaeda militia leader came on the third day of a visit by U.S. Vice President Joe Biden, in advance of the withdrawal of American troops at the end of the year.
A parked car bomb exploded in the town of Khalis as morning shoppers were starting to arrive, killing 10 persons and wounding 22 others, two police officials said.

U.K. Expels Iranian Diplomats
Good stuff, it would be nice to see all countries expel the Iranian Diplomats.
(Bloomberg) -- The U.K. ordered Iran to close its embassy in London and remove its diplomats in the aftermath of a mob attack on the British Embassy in Tehran.
Iran’s isolation deepened as France and Germany recalled their ambassadors for consultations and Italy considered closing its mission in the Iranian capital. Britain closed its embassy in Tehran and evacuated the staff following the attack.
Occupy L.A.: 30 tons of debris left behind at City Hall tent city
A nice disgusting mess was left behind by the "occupy" rejects.
Just remember, this is what so many Democrats Supported; including the president himself.
Filthy Hippies.
Los Angeles Times
Sanitation officials said Wednesday that they expect to haul away 30 tons of debris from the Occupy L.A. encampment –- everything from clothing to heaps of garbage to oddball curiosities left behind by the protesters who lived at the City Hall tent city for two months.
Andrea Alarcon, president of the city Public Works board, said workers already have removed 25 tons of belongings from the City Hall park, all of it heading straight to a landfill.
Sanitation crews also have vacuumed up about 3,000 gallons of water that had washed into a catch basin in recent days and are testing it for hazardous materials, she said.
