21 Dead From Bootleg Alcohol in Ecuador Town

Must have been some very potent juice.

Authorities in Ecuador have banned the sale of alcohol in a community whhttp://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gifere 21 people have died after drinking bootleg liquor.

Public Health Minister David Chiriboga says 103 others have been treated for intoxication from adulterated alcohol in the coastal municipality of Urdaneta in Los Rios province, where eight were initially reported dead.

Chiriboga says police have seized 28 containers each with 55 gallons of alcohol contaminated with methanol. Methyl alcohol is a toxic substance sometimes used to illegally produce cheap liquor.

Truckloads of Four Loko and other alcohol-laced energy drinks are being recycled into ethanol and other products after federal authorities told manufacturers the beverages were dangerous and caused users to become "wide-awake drunk."

Wholesalers from Virginia, North Carolina, Maryland and other East Coast states started sending cases of the high-alcohol, caffeinated malt beverages to MXI Environmental Services in Virginia after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced a crackdown on the sale of such beverages in November.

First female-run alcohol factory uncovered in Saudi Arabia

A group of women, from Africa, were caught running a bootleg operation inside Saudi Arabia. I find it pretty impressive that women, who are already opressed in Saudi Arabia, can find the entrepreneurial spirit to brew alcohol and sell it which is prohibited by islamic law. AKI

Riyadh, 20 feb.(AKI) - Saudi religious police say they have uncovered the country's first female-run alcohol factory, in the eastern city of Dammam. Alcohol production and consumption is strictly forbidden in Saudi Arabia, which adheres to the fundamentalist Wahabi interpretation of Islam.

The alleged illegal alcohol factory was located inside an empty house, where religious police said they had in recent weeks noted a number of foreign women carrying containers into and from the house.

During a raid on the building on Thursday, police arrested a group of African women they allege were running the factory. All the women are aged between 35 and 45 years of age. Police did not state their nationalities.
