Final results on Saturday showed that Islamist parties won nearly three-quarters of the seats in parliament in Egypt's first elections since the ouster of authoritarian president Hosni Mubarak, according to election officials and political groups.
The Islamist domination of Egypt's parliament has worried liberals and even some conservatives about the religious tone of the new legislature, which will be tasked with forming a committee to write a new constitution. It remains unclear whether the constitution will be written while the generals who took power after Mubarak's fall are still in charge, or rather after presidential elections this summer.
In the vote for the lower house of parliament, a coalition led by the fundamentalist Muslim Brotherhood won 47 percent, or 235 seats in the 498-seat parliament. The ultraconservative Al-Nour Party was second with 25 percent, or 125 seats.

Egypt's top reformist leader has said the liberal youth behind the country's uprising have been "decimated" in parliamentary elections dominated by Islamists and expressed concern about the rise of hard-line religious elements advocating extremist ideas such as banning women from driving.
Mohamed ElBaradei, a Nobel Prize laureate and possible presidential candidate, said Sunday he hopes moderate Islamists will rein in the extremists and send a reassuring message to the world that Egypt will not go down an ultraconservative religious path.
"The youth feel let down. They don't feel that any of the revolution's goals have been achieved," ElBaradei told The Associated Press in an interview on the same day electoral authorities announced that Islamist parties captured an overwhelming majority of votes in the first round of elections last week. "They got decimated," he said, adding the youth failed to unify and form "one essential critical mass."

With 20% of the vote, the Salafist party al-Nour took the second-highest number of votes, al-Quds al-Arabi and al-Hayat reported. Al-Quds al-Arabi reported that liberal parties took 15% of the vote. The Jerusalem Post could not independently verify the reports...
The Muslim Brotherhood, banned but semi-tolerated under Mubarak, says its FJP expects to win 43 percent of party list votes in the first stage, building on the Islamist group's decades of grassroots social and religious work.
But the Brotherhood's website also forecast that the Salafi al-Nour party would gain 30 percent of the vote, a shock for some Egyptians, especially minority Christian Copts, who fear it will try to impose strict Islamic codes on society.

Egypt 'scrambling' after at least 23 killed in clashes

Egyptian Prime Minister Essam Sharaf said Monday that clashes hours earlier between army forces and pro-Coptic Christian protesters had "brought us back" to the tense, violent period at the onset of the recent revolution.
"Instead of going forward, we found ourselves scrambling for security," Sharaf said on state television in an early morning speech, noting that the incident had produced "martyrs, both civilian and from the military."
The bloodshed in Cairo occurred just over a week after the burning of a Coptic Christian church in southern Egypt. The burning prompted the Sunday protest demanding equality and protection of Coptic places of worship.
Accounts of casualties from the protest varied.
Sheriff Doss, the head of Egypt's chief association of Coptics, said 17 civilians died and 40 were injured.
An additional 12 army troops were killed and more than 50 were injured, according to Lt. Col. Amr Imam, an army spokesman.

Could Saturday's violent events at the Israeli embassy in Cairo repeat themselves, this time in Jordan? Jordanians are planning a "million-man protest" near the Israeli embassy in Amman to take place on Thursday, Yedioth Ahronoth reported Monday.
Organizers have already announced that the protesters will try to break through the fortified embassy building and take down the Israeli flag.

The Islamic Jihad organization announced a new ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip early Friday morning.
According to sources in Gaza the ceasefire was brokered by Egypt and the UN.
The ceasefire has already begun, according to Israel Radio.
Nafaz Azam, one of the organization's leaders in the Gaza Strip, made the statement, which was unexpected, as earlier Thursday the terrorist group had vowed to extend the range of their rocket capabilities, sending projectiles deeper into Israeli territory.
According to Islamic Jihad, a small terrorist group with roots in the Muslim Brotherhood, it would triple the number of Israelis affected by rocket attacks.
This announcement came as the South braced for a weekend of violence as rocket fire intensified on Thursday and the IDF struck back, killing two terrorists in the Gaza Strip.
At least 15 rockets and mortar shells pounded southern Israel, hitting open areas near Ashkelon and in the Sha’ar Hanegev Regional Council. A mortar shell struck the Erez crossing, which is frequently used by Palestinians to enter Israel for medical treatments, causing extensive damage.

One dead as Muslims, Christians clash in Cairo
None of this will end well for any Christian in Egypt, it looked like for a minute that the Muslims and the Christians were going to stand up for each others rights!

(Reuters) - One Christian youth was shot dead Tuesday during a protest between 1,300 Christians and Muslims who were throwing stones and Molotov cocktails at each other, a security source said.
The fighting erupted when a group of Christians blocked a main highway south of Cairo and clashed with Muslims who wanted to pass through, a security source said.
Christians were protesting for the second day over a church in Helwan on the outskirts of the capital that was set on fire Sunday after a row sparked by a relationship between a Christian man and a Muslim woman, witnesses and a security source said.
The army fired gunshots in the air to break up the riot but was unable to quell the fight straight away, witnesses said. An army statement said it "successfully handled riots Tuesday."
One 18-year old Christian was killed by a bullet that struck him in the back but it was unclear who had fired the shot or whether it had been aimed intentionally, the security source said. Some witnesses said they saw protesters carrying weapons.

Thousands of supporters of Egypt's democracy movement are gathered in Cairo's Tahrir Square Friday for a day of celebration marking one week since President Hosni Mubarak stepped down.
A leading Muslim cleric, Yusuf al-Qaradawi called on the Egyptian army to listen to the will of the people and bring fresh faces into Mr. Mubarak's former cabinet, which still includes many of the former president's allies.
The cleric also called on the Egyptian people to be patient with their new leadership. The Egyptian army, which has popular support, has assumed control of the government until elections can be held.
Though security surrounds the square - the site of 18 days of anti-government protests leading up to Mr. Mubarak's resignation - the mood is reported to be upbeat. Demonstrations are expected to gain momentum as the day progresses.

Egypt Suez Canal told Iran warship passing scrapped
Why else would Iran be sailing up and down the Suez canal, other than to create tension in the area.
We won't find out now, it appears Egypt has told them they may not use the waterway.

(Reuters) - The Suez Canal has been told that plans by two Iranian naval ships to cross the waterway were canceled, an official said on Thursday, removing a potential policy headache for Egypt's new army rulers.
It was not immediately clear which side was behind the cancellation. Any naval vessels passing through the canal, a strategic international shipping route, must first have approval from Egypt's foreign and defense ministries, officials said.
If the ships had crossed, it would have been the first time since Iran's 1979 revolution that Iranian warships had passed through the canal, officials said.
Iran's revolution poisoned ties with Egypt, which signed a peace treaty with Israel that year.
Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman had said plans for the two Iranian warships to sail through the canal en route to Syria were a "provocation." He had said the ships were expected to pass through the Suez Canal overnight on Wednesday.

Tensions are rising in Egypt as tens of thousands of protesters continue to demand that authoritarian President Hosni Mubarak step down despite his announcement that he would remain in office until September.
Egypt's military said Friday that it endorses Mubarak's decision not to resign, which he announced Thursday after widespread speculation that he would announce he was stepping down during a special address to the country.
The military said in a statement that it supports his plan for a peaceful transfer of power, and for free and fair presidential elections later in the year.
It also promised to end the country's 30-year state of emergency once "the current situation has ended."
Protesters had demanded a repeal of the law, which allows for the arbitrary arrest and detention of those the military perceives as agitators.
Despite the army's concession, protesters remained furious Friday, swarming outside the presidential palace and streaming by the thousands into Cairo's Tahrir Square.

The decision by the fundamentalist Brotherhood, which has been outlawed since 1954, comes as Egypt's leadership seeks to defuse mass demonstrations — now in their 13th day — by proposing reforms but stopping short of the protesters' key demand that Mubarak step down.
The talks would be the first known discussions between the government and the Brotherhood in years, suggesting the group could gain an open political role in the post-Mubarak era along with other opposition political parties.
The Brotherhood said in a statement that its representatives would meet with Vice President Omar Suleiman to press its "legitimate and just demands." Suleiman has accused the Brotherhood, businessmen and foreigners he did not identify as being behind a wave of looting and arson that swept much of the country last weekend after security forces inexplicably pulled out from the streets.

(Reuters) - If Egypt's President Hosni Mubarak is toppled, Israel will lose one of its very few friends in a hostile neighborhood and President Barack Obama will bear a large share of the blame, Israeli pundits said on Monday.
Political commentators expressed shock at how the United States as well as its major European allies appeared to be ready to dump a staunch strategic ally of three decades, simply to conform to the current ideology of political correctness.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has told ministers of the Jewish state to make no comment on the political cliffhanger in Cairo, to avoid inflaming an already explosive situation. But Israel's President Shimon Peres is not a minister.
"We always have had and still have great respect for President Mubarak," he said on Monday. He then switched to the past tense. "I don't say everything that he did was right, but he did one thing which all of us are thankful to him for: he kept the peace in the Middle East."
Newspaper columnists were far more blunt.
One comment by Aviad Pohoryles in the daily Maariv was entitled "A Bullet in the Back from Uncle Sam." It accused Obama and his Secretary of State Hillary Clinton of pursuing a naive, smug, and insular diplomacy heedless of the risks.
Who is advising them, he asked, "to fuel the mob raging in the streets of Egypt and to demand the head of the person who five minutes ago was the bold ally of the president ... an almost lone voice of sanity in a Middle East?"

Despite the heavy presence of the military, many demonstrators are on edge, saying that the large turnout anticipated following the afternoon prayers could inspire violence.
"It's getting dangerous out there," said Sayed Mohamed Metwali, 36, who is unemployed. "12 men beat me on the street when they found out I had been at the protest."
An informal economy has sprung up around the square, with tea vendors and cigarette sellers prowling the protests. Over the course of the morning, protesters rallied, chanting for Mubarak's departure and, notably, calling for the demise of the United States.
The Obama administration says it is in talks with top Egyptian officials about the possibility of Mubarak immediately resigning, and an interim government forming before free and fair elections this year, the Associated Press reports.

Egyptian army tanks and soldiers moved to end violence between anti-government protesters and supporters of President Hosni Mubarak in Cairo's central square on Thursday after standing by for nearly a day as the two sides battled with rocks, sticks, bottles and firebombs.
Hours after automatic gunfire hit the anti-government protest camp at Tahrir Square, killing at least three protesters, soldiers carrying rifles could be seen lining up between the two sides around 11 a.m.. Several hundred other soldiers were moving toward the front line.
Four tanks cleared a highway overpass from where Mubarak supporters had hurled rocks and firebombs onto the protesters.
The pre-dawn firing escalated what appeared to be a well-orchestrated series of assaults on the demonstrators that began when Mubarak supporters charged into the square on horses and camels on Wednesday afternoon, lashing people with whips, while others rained firebombs and rocks from rooftops.
Anti-Mubarak demonstrators traded showers of rocks and other projectiles in a counter-assault that drove their assailants out of the square within hours. Anti-government protesters took army trucks and set up an ad-hoc frontline on the northern edge of the square, near the famed Egyptian Museum. The two sides traded volleys of rocks and Molotov cocktails for much of the night, until sustained bursts of automatic gunfire and powerful single shots rained into the square starting at around 4 a.m. and continuing for more than two hours.

Cairo crowds swell in anticipation of massive march

Helicopters thundered low over central Cairo's Tahrir Square early Tuesday as crowds swelled in anticipation of what protesters hoped would be a massive march aimed at bringing down the 30-year regime of President Hosni Mubarak.
Thousands of pedestrians walked past tanks positioned around the square, where organizers have appealed for a million compatriots to flood the streets.
Egyptian authorities shut down Internet traffic and cellphone service ahead of the protest, in the apparent hope that it would prevent demonstrators from coming to the square.
Al Arabiya reported that authorities have blocked the road between the city of Suez and Cairo to stymie the flow of protesters. The ruling National Democratic Party has also called for a counter demonstration in support of Mubarak. Meanwhile, a coalition of Egyptian human rights groups have issued a call for Mubarak to step down.
Crowds inside the key expanse at the heart of the Egyptian capital have been growing day after day since Saturday, when security forces stopped trying to halt demonstrators from gathering in the square.
Tuesday's new arrivals seemed to energize protesters who had spent another chilly night in the plaza, and the crowd broke into a full-bodied roar of "Down, Mubarak, down!"
