The international cries for Syria's government to end a bloody crackdown on civilians could intensify Wednesday as activist groups reported fresh onslaughts in several cities.
The United Nations Security Council is expected Wednesday to follow up on a statement last week that condemned the Syrian regime for attacks on peaceful protesters and called for both sides to end the violence.
Meanwhile, the United States is moving toward issuing an explicit call for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to step down, U.S. government sources told CNN Tuesday.
The move is expected to be announced in coming days after U.S. officials consult with the United Nations Security Council, the sources said. They said the question of whether to call for al-Assad to step down has been under discussion over the past few weeks, the sources said.
While international leaders mull their next steps, heavy gunfire, explosions and tanks permeated the eastern city of Deir Ezzor on Wednesday, an activist group and a resident said.

AMMAN: Syrian tanks stormed a city in the east of the country Sunday, crushing makeshift barricades, opening fire and seizing the central square, residents said, in a fresh crackdown that activists said killed dozens of civilians.
The assault on the provincial capital Deir al-Zour comes a week after tanks stormed the city of Hama, where activists say scores have been killed in an ongoing siege to crush five-months of protests against President Bashar Assad’s rule.
“Early this morning columns of army tanks and bulldozers, under cover of heavy rounds of gunfire, stormed into the western and northern entrances of the city and dismantled barricades set up by residents,” a Deir al-Zour resident said. “A dozen tanks are taking position in the main square in Jubaila market in the northern sector of Deir al-Zour,” the resident, who gave his name as Abu Bakr, said by telephone.

(Reuters) - Syrian tanks moved into parts of the restive eastern city of Deir al-Zor on Sunday amid the noise of heavy machinegun fire and explosions, residents and activists said.
"Armored vehicles and tanks have entered several neighborhoods on the outskirts. They are firing heavy machineguns and explosions have been heard in al-Joura district," one city resident told Reuters by telephone.
He said he had heard that three people had been killed in the assault and that the army was making arrests. Syria has barred most independent media since the start of an uprising against President Bashar al-Assad, making it hard to verify accounts from residents, activists and authorities.

On one of the bloodiest days of retribution since protests erupted in March, up to 95 people were killed in Hama alone and 136 nationwide.
For nearly a month the security forces had laid siege to Hama, sealing off access roads into the central Syrian city in an attempt to isolate its fractious inhabitants from the rest of the country.
But with perhaps half of the city’s 700,000-strong population regularly taking to the streets to demand the regime’s downfall, the security forces chose to resort once more to bloodshed.
Just before dawn, tanks and armoured vehicles crossed the Orontes River and advanced into the centre of the city, leaving crushed barricades and corpses in their wake.
As day broke, the city’s skyline seemed almost entirely shrouded with smoke. Mosque loudspeakers calling the faithful to prayer and urging them to remain steadfast were almost drowned out by the relentless cacophony of gunfire and exploding tank shells.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. Marines must be able to storm enemy shores in amphibious vehicles such as those being built by General Dynamics Corp, the top Marine said, defending a $13.2 billion program called into question by Defense Secretary Robert Gates.
General Dynamics' Expeditionary Fighting Vehicle, or EFV, "is inextricably linked to that capability and an absolutely critical requirement for us," General James Conway, the Marine Corps commandant, told reporters at a Pentagon briefing on Wednesday.
"And, by the way, China has already fielded a similar vehicle and is building more," he said.
As conceived by the Marine Corps, the EFV is to be able to transport up to 18 combat-ready Marines at high speeds on both land and sea. It would have advanced communications capabilities, provide increased armored protection against rocket-propelled grenades and improvised explosive devices, and deliver lethal firepower up to 2,000 meters (2,200 yards).
But Gates, in an April 17 speech to the Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island, said he had directed Pentagon planners to take a "realistic" view of the need for landing large numbers of troops "so we can better gauge our requirements."

US Warships Set to Intercept Hijacked Cargo Ship
An unspecified number of US warships along with USS destroyer Howard have surrounded the hijacked Ukranian cargo vessel, Faina. The cargo vessel is carrying a large amount of weapons such as RPGs, anti-aircraft guns, AK-47s and 33 T-72 tanks. The shipment was destined for Sudan not Kenya as previously stated. Kenya is only a transit point for the shipment. The Somali pirates are demanding $20 million in ransom.AP
MOGADISHU, Somalia (AP) — U.S. warships and helicopters on Monday surrounded a hijacked cargo ship loaded with Sudan-bound tanks and other arms to keep the weapons from falling "into the wrong hands," an American Navy spokesman said.
Lt. Nathan Christensen, a deputy spokesman for the U.S. Navy's Bahrain-based 5th Fleet, said the shipment of 33 Russian-designed tanks, rifles and ammunition on the Ukrainian-operated Faina was headed for Sudan — not Kenya as previously claimed by Kenyan officials. The U.N. has imposed an embargo on arms destined for the Sudanese region of Darfur, to be observed by the government, allied paramilitary units known as the janjaweed, and the rebels.
A 5th Fleet statement said the ship was headed for the Kenyan port of Mombassa, but that "additional reports state the cargo was intended for Sudan."
The pirates who seized the ship are demanding a $20 million ransom.
The U.S. fears the armaments onboard the Ukrainian vessel may end up with al-Qaida-linked Islamic insurgents [al Shabaab] who have been fighting the shaky U.N.-backed Somali transitional government since late 2006.

Somali Pirates Land 30 Russian Tanks in Hijacking
Somali pirates have hit a goldmine this morning when they hijacked a Ukranian cargo ship. The ship was carrying RPGs, Zu-23 anti-aircraft guns and 30 Russian T-72 tanks. You can bet these weapons will end up in al Shabaab's posession. Times Online
The pirates would hardly have been able to believe their eyes as they inspected the hold of their latest conquest, the Faina.
The Ukrainian vessel was heading for the Kenyan port of Mombasa loaded down with rocket-propelled grenades, anti-aircraft guns and 30 Russian T-72 tanks.
“They really hit the jackpot this time,” said a regional arms expert. “There is not much they can do with the tanks, but the RPGs and the Zu-23 anti-aircraft guns will soon find their way into Somalia’s arms markets.
“These are the sort of weapons that fighters in Somalia really like.”
