A combination of SWAT stealth and deadly force resolved a four-hour long hostage standoff at Discovery Channel headquarters, but only after operators thought the hostages were in "grave danger," police said today.

"Any time that police officers use deadly force, it's to save a life... In this situation the hostages -- who were tremendously courageous throughout this incident -- were in grave danger," Montgomery County Police Chief J. Thomas Manger told "Good Morning America."

Manger said that SWAT officers had been able to sneak "very close" to Lee without alerting him, close enough to hear a disconcerting "pop."

"SWAT officers heard a shout, they heard a pop. They were unclear if that was a gunshot or if it was the suspect detonating a device," Manger said. "The officers immediately confronted the suspect. He had a gun out and he was shot at that point."

Mass migration in Pakistani tribal area as operation looms

Pakistan is still playing the " We want to but were not sure if we should " Game with the Taliban !

ISLAMABAD, Sept. 28 (Xinhua) -- Tribesmen are migrating from various areas of northwest Pakistan's South Waziristan tribal agency in fear of an upcoming military operation, local TV channels reported Monday.

Political official said people have been advised to vacate these areas as action against militants has become inevitable in Maken and Mehsud tribal region, the private TV Express reported.

According to sources, a large number of tribesmen are leaving their houses in South Waziristan to various areas of nearby Dera Ismail Khan, Bannu and North Waziristan after security forces announced directives to vacate the area from a local radio station Sunday.

According to TV channel reports, Pakistani security forces are moving from Swat valley to South Waziristan. Taliban and Al-Qaeda leaders are believed to be hiding in the area where the U.S. has intensified drone attacks this year.

But Pakistani Interior Minister Rehman Malik told media on Sunday that Pakistan has not decided whether it should launch a full-scale ground military operation in the Waziristan tribal areas against Taliban militants.

Maybe they should just let them be ? I'm sure they will just stop being so mean and start being some really nice guy's !

Meanwhile, White House officials reportedly are refocusing on Pakistan by potentially launching more missile strikes by unmanned spy planes and sending more special operations forces in the lawless tribal regions along Pakistan's border with Afghanistan.

Fresh clashes in Pakistan's Swat valley; dozens killed

Maybe Pakistan should rethink there backing off of the Taliban ?

MINGORA, Pakistan (reuters) - Pakistani troops killed 15 militants in fresh clashes in Swat, the army said on Tuesday, taking the death toll to 45 in five days after a lull in the campaign to clear the Taliban out of the northwestern valley.

Security forces also launched an operation to flush out militants in the northwestern tribal region of Khyber, bordering Afghanistan, a government official said.

The army went on the offensive in Swat in late April and says it has killed over 2,000 militants, and lost 312 soldiers in the fighting. Independent casualty estimates are unavailable.

Despite the Taliban's losses, the recent clashes and a suicide attack in Swat's main town of Mingora on Sunday showed they can still hit back.

"It was very precise and we managed to kill 15 militants," Lt. Col. Akhtar Abbas, a military spokesman in Swat, said of the attack launched on Monday evening.

The army had already killed at least 30 insurgents in encounters since Friday, while 12 police recruits were killed by a suicide bomber on Sunday.

Bodies of suspected Taliban found in Pakistan's Swat

O.K. so some bodies are being dumped in the fields of swat valley ! They have a pretty good idea they are bad guys !
Is this not a good thing ?

MINGORA, Pakistan (Reuters) - Villagers in Pakistan's Swat valley have found the bodies of 14 suspected militants, reviving concern about extra-judicial killings after a successful army offensive against Taliban militants.

The military went on the offensive in the Taliban bastion of Swat, northwest of Islamabad, in late April and has killed or driven hundreds of al Qaeda-linked insurgents out of the former tourist valley.

But as the army finishes up its searches and residents displaced by the fighting return home, bodies of suspected Taliban members have been turning up.

Fourteen bodies were found late on Monday dumped in fields on the outskirts of Charbagh town, villagers and district officials said.

"The bodies were lying in different fields and had bullet wounds," said Wali Khan, a teacher in the town.

Earlier, about 18 bodies were found in different parts of Swat and the independent Human Rights Commission of Pakistan said it suspected security agencies had carried out extra-judicial killings.

"We call for a proper investigation to find out who killed them, who were the dead, whether they were militants, innocent people or by-stander," said I.A. Rehman, secretary general of the rights group.

"We've already demanded an investigation but nothing has happened. It's a serious matter and must be looked into."

The military has denied any involvement in the killings.

"This could be a result of revenge by the local people," said military spokesman Major-General Athar Abbas. "It could be a reaction to all that happened to the people in Swat."

At least 27 militants killed in Malakand

Good news , But why ,If the Pakistani military has cleared Swat of all the Taliban , are they still finding them and killing them ?

Dawn.com

ISLAMABAD: Troops killed at least 27 suspected Taliban militants in and around the Swat valley, officials said Wednesday.

The high number of casualties, which are impossible to confirm, is the latest in a surge of deadly clashes reported since Pakistani commanders said they had effectively defeated Taliban opposition in parts of the northwest.

Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani said earlier this month that the military had ‘eliminated’ extremists, but deadly skirmishes have continued in Swat where the Taliban focused a two-year rebellion, neighbouring Buner and Dir.

The military announced Wednesday that 16 ‘terrorists’ were killed and three terror training centres destroyed over the last 24 hours in Dir, just to the north of Swat where the military offensive was launched in late April.

In Swat and Buner, where the government has bussed back thousands of 1.9 million civilians who were displaced by the fighting, the military said 11 ‘terrorists’ were killed and two soldiers wounded.

Troops go after final Taleban

Eight weeks ago the Taliban completely controlled the Swat valley , now they are almost eradicated from the area , If the Pakistani military can hold them off , this will be a big slap in the face of the Taliban.

Straits Times
CHUPRIAL (Pakistan) - PAKISTANI military officials say troops are going after the last pockets of Taleban fighters in the Swat Valley as an even tougher battle gets under way in the tribal belt along the Afghanistan border.

Artillery fire was pounding militant positions in the Biha valley, in the upper Swat region, as an intense operation there started Friday night and continued into Saturday.

Maj. Gen. Sajjad Ghani, who is in control of efforts to clear the northern Swat valley, says 95 per cent of Swat has been cleared and that most of the last resistance is in Biha, a short valley that backs into snow-covered mountains that are limiting the Taleban's efforts to flee.

He says about 400 militants have been killed in the area over the past six weeks.

Pakistan battles Taliban; Swat offensive "near end"

The offensive near its end ? Excellent , but I would hope that they will keep the Area well secured once it is over ! the Taliban will most likely regroup at a later time and pull the same B.S. again ! Just because they have left ( By death or by running away ) does not mean they are finished !

ISLAMABAD (Reuters) - Pakistani forces battled militants in South Waziristan on the Afghan border on Sunday and a government official said an offensive in the Swat valley could be over in two or three days.
The United States and the Afghan government have long been pressing Pakistan to root militants out of South Waziristan and other enclaves on the Afghan border, from where the Taliban direct their Afghan war.

Militants attacked a paramilitary force camp near the town of Jandola, 80 km (50 miles) east of Wana, the main town in South Waziristan, late on Saturday, security officials said.

"They carried out a very serious attack on our positions at

around midnight. It was repulsed after a heavy exchange of fire," said military spokesman Major-General Athar Abbas.

Up to 15 militants and three soldiers were killed, he said, although an intelligence official in the region said earlier at least 40 militants and four soldiers were killed. There was no independent confirmation of the casualty estimates.

General rules out talks with Swat Taliban

‘This time it has been decided to take the operation to its logical conclusion aimed at eliminating the terrorists,’ he said.

And it is About Time ! Now just keep up the Pressure !

Dawn.com
KHWAZAKHELA: Major-Gen Sajjad Ghani, who is leading the ongoing military offensive in the upper part of the valley, ruled out any possibility of talks with militants.

‘Today they stand isolated, not only in the valley but also at the national scene. I think this is a big achievement of the government as well as the military,’ military spokesman Maj-Gen Athar Abbas said.

Maj Ghani said the military was determined to eliminate the Taliban and ruled out the possibility of any talks or a ceasefire with the militants.

‘This time it has been decided to take the operation to its logical conclusion aimed at eliminating the terrorists,’ he said.

Gen Ghani said civilian casualties were ‘less than double figures’ in areas under his command.

He said two major militant strongholds had been secured in upper Swat and people who had fled the area would soon be asked to return to their homes.

Pakistan army closes in on Taliban base in Swat

An unconfirmed number puts the Taliban At 775 dead , And about 30 Pakistani military dead ! And people fleeing the area At about 360,000 !

KOTA, Pakistan (Reuters) - Pakistani soldiers closed in on Tuesday on a Taliban headquarters in Swat, the military said, as the United Nations called for help for hundreds of thousands of people displaced by the fighting.

The offensive in Swat, 130 km (80 miles) northwest of Islamabad, is seen as a test of the government's commitment to face up to a growing Taliban insurgency and comes after the United States accused it of "abdicating" to the militants.

The fighting has caused a civilian exodus from the valley, once a tourist destination, raising fears of a humanitarian crisis.
Helicopters flew soldiers into the remote Peochar valley, where the Taliban have a headquarters, a military spokesman said in a statement.

Residents said troops had also been seen moving on the ground toward Peochar, a side valley running northwest off the main Swat valley.

"It looks as if there will be a big assault as we saw many helicopters flying toward Peochar and foot soldiers were also moving there," said villager Nawaz Khan.

Helicopter gunships pound Mingora

Of course the Taliban are going to use civilians as human shields , that's what all Militant Muslims do when they fight , it is a sign of weakness and just pure cowardice !
Hopefully this is not just a show for Obama , and they keep this up ,maybe they will get smart and let the U.S. perform some Airstrikes on there Known locations !

Dawn.com
INGORA: According to official sources, a major military operation is likely to begin shortly with the army ready to push back militants. Gunship helicopters have already begun pounding militant hideouts in Swat’s Mingora city, DawnNews reported.

Clashes have erupted between security forces and militants at an emerald mine in Mingora held by the Taliban. According to officials, militants have also set two private banks on fire after looting them.

Reinforcements have already been deployed in the valley, according to local citizens, prompting speculation that action is imminent.

On Tuesday, thousands of residents fled Swat following a government request to evacuate the area in preparation for a fresh offensive against Taliban militants.

Reuters quoted Mian Iftikhar Hussain, the provincial information minister, as saying that close to 500,000 people could eventually flee the valley.

The February peace deal lies in tatters, and militants have captured several important government buildings in Mingora, 80 miles northwest of Islamabad, and have taken up positions on rooftops, according to Reuters.

DawnNews quoted residents as saying that the Taliban have come down from hilltops and are occupying local homes. In addition, they have begun stopping people from leaving the valley and intend to use them as human shields.

Residents asked to leave homes in Pakistan's Swat

This is what eventually happens when you have two parties with conflicting versions of peace ! The Taliban's version of peace ( Complete Dominance and control ) Just is not blending in with Pakistan's version , a lot of control without a lot of the dominance ! The Taliban has Finally over stepped what they were allowed to do !

MINGORA, Pakistan, May 5 (Reuters) - Pakistani authorities urged people on Tuesday in the Swat Valley's main town to leave their homes for safer places as security forces could soon launch an offensive against Taliban militants there.

A February peace pact aimed at ending Taliban violence in the Swat valley northwest of the capital has all but collapsed as the government comes under U.S. pressure to get tough with the militants rather than appease them.

President Asif Ali Zardari, widower of former prime minister Benazir Bhutto, is due to meet U.S. President Barack Obama and Afghan President Hamid Karzai in Washington on Wednesday for talks on the growing militant threat in the region. [ID:nN04433219]

Militants had infiltrated into five districts of Mingora, the main town in Swat, and begun attacking security forces and government installations, said the top government official in the valley, Khushal Khan Khattak.

"We have relaxed the curfew today and asked residents to leave their areas because security forces may engage militants and we want to avoid civilian casualties," Khattak told Reuters.

Taliban Seize Vital Pakistan Area Closer to the Capital

In as little as ten days of receiving the right to have Sharia law , the Taliban has managed to take over another town ! Buner is now Owned by the Militant Taliban !
Pakistan Probably has about Two to Three Months , before it is no longer Pakistan !And they can Kiss their ass goodbye ! this is a text book example of what happens when you let Islam get carried away !Absolute , Brutal And Hostile Domination !
Bye , Bye Pakistan ! Hello ???

NY Times
ISLAMABAD, Pakistan — Taliban militants have established control of a strategically important area only 70 miles from the capital, law enforcement officials said Wednesday. The move is part of an unrelenting push by the Taliban toward the heart of Pakistan.

Heavily armed militants were patrolling villages and local police had retreated to their station houses in much of the city of Buner, a rural area adjacent to Swat, where the Taliban seized control from the Pakistani army in February, they said. Buner is a gateway to a major Pakistani city, Mardan.

“They take over Buner, then they roll into Mardan and that’s the end of the game,” a senior law enforcement official in the North West Frontier Province said.

The expansion of the Taliban into Buner comes 10 days after the government of President Asif Ali Zardari agreed to the introduction of Sharia law in Swat, a move that the Obama administration has criticized as too much of a concession to the Taliban.

....

The takeover of Buner is particularly significant because the people there have tried in the past year to stand up to the Taliban by establishing small private armies to fight the militants. Last year when the militants encroached into Buner, killing policemen, the local people fought back and forced the militants out.

But with a beachhead in neighboring Swat, and a number of training camps for fresh recruits, the Taliban were able to carry out what amounted to an invasion of Buner.

“The training camps will provide waves of men coming into Buner,” the senior law enforcement official said.

The Pakistani army, which called for a truce with the Taliban in mid-February, remains in barracks in Swat. There was little expectation that the army would take on the militants in Buner, the official said.

Pakistan army halts operations in Swat

Now that the Pakistani Army has pulled out of the Swat region ! There is nothing to stop the Taliban from "Rebuilding" it's base ! That means that they will Probably start Protecting Al Qaida , and give them a place to train ! If Pakistan really thinks that the Taliban is just going to stop ! they are very , very , Mistaken .

ISLAMABAD (Reuters) - The Pakistan army said on Monday it had ceased operations against Taliban militants in the northwestern valley of Swat, and an Islamist cleric asked for troops to be shifted to "safer places" to give peace a chance.

U.S. officials have expressed unease about Pakistan's strategy for pacifying Swat. They fear it could result in another safe haven for al Qaeda and Taliban militants in the country.

"The military operation has been halted," military spokesman Major-General Athar Abbas told Reuters, explaining that further civilian casualties would have alienated support for the army.
....

Hundreds of thousands of people have fled their homes, and the Taliban largely controls the valley despite the presence of four army brigades or 12,000 to 16,000 troops.

The army had already reduced operations in Swat because it lacked public backing, and was hampered by the breakdown of the local administration and ineffectiveness of the police in the face of the insurgency, Abbas said.

Abbas said there would be no sanctuary for militants in Swat so long as the writ of the state was re-established.

But he said that at this stage that was "a big if."

Taliban Commander Plus 9 Other Terrorists Killed

Pakistani forces killed a taliban commander, Ali Bakht, along with 9 other taliban terrorists. After about several months of bad publicity for Pakistan, specifically that it's secret service, the ISI, and army are helping out the taliban, Pakistan needs to quite it's critics. But I will not be fooled into thinking that Pakistan is an actual ally all of a sudden. Bloomberg

Aug. 7 (Bloomberg) -- Pakistan's army said a militant commander was among nine gunmen killed in a raid in the northwestern Swat Valley as successful military operations allowed authorities to ease curfew restrictions.

Ali Bakht was among those killed in the Devloi area yesterday, the army said in a statement. Security forces killed as many as 94 militants in five days of fighting in the region, the military said three days ago.
....
The army has been fighting since last year against supporters of Maulana Fazlullah, a pro-Taliban cleric, who wants to impose Islamic law in the Swat Valley, a once popular tourist destination about 250 kilometers (150 miles) from Pakistan's capital, Islamabad.

Ali Bakht is a close associate of Fazlullah, the British Broadcasting Corp. reported. His death was confirmed by an unidentified Taliban spokesman, it said.

Militants have threatened to organize suicide bombings in Pakistani cities unless the army stops its offensives in Swat, the BBC said on its Web site.

The provincial government agreed in May to withdraw soldiers and allow Islamic law in the valley. Fighters have repeatedly violated the accord by burning schools for girls and abducting and killing members of the security forces, the official Associated Press of Pakistan cited Brigadier Zia Anjum Bodla as saying Aug. 4.

At least 39 girls’ schools were blown up or set ablaze by militants in Swat last month.

Taliban spokesman Muslim Khan said his group was not behind the blast and laid blame on a ‘third party’.

He said that local Taliban were not against girls’ education although they opposed the system of women’s education in the country.

The shops were in a market in Charbagh area and destroyed on Friday evening.
