Reporting from Los Angeles and Washington - Seeking common ground with Republicans on energy and climate issues, President Obama on Tuesday pledged $8 billion in loan guarantees needed to build the first U.S. nuclear reactors in nearly three decades.
The move, along with a tripling of nuclear loan guarantees in the president's budget, represents a new federal commitment to the low-carbon-emitting, but highly controversial, nuclear power sector long championed by the GOP.
Industry groups and Republican leaders praised the announcement, which has been expected for months, but some environmentalists and free-market think tanks protested.
Speaking at a training center at the Lanham, Md., headquarters of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 26, the president spoke favorably of nuclear power as part of a mix of energy alternatives to oil.
"In order to truly harness our potential in clean energy, we'll have to do more," Obama said. "In the near term, as we transition to cleaner energy sources, we'll have to make tough decisions about opening new offshore areas for oil and gas development. We'll need to make continued investments in advanced biofuels and clean coal technologies, even as we build greater capacity in renewables like wind and solar.
"And we'll have to build a new generation of safe, clean nuclear power plants in America," he said.
Obama said his administration would supply about $8 billion in loan guarantees to build two new reactors at an existing nuclear power plant in Burke, Ga., providing thousands of construction jobs in the next few years and about 800 permanent jobs in the years to come.
Free-market groups complained that the loan guarantees could leave taxpayers on the hook for projects too risky for the private sector to finance.
Many environmentalists echoed the concerns and warned that the administration had not mapped a strategy for safe, long-term storage of radioactive waste.

Blue collar U.S. males lose more ground
Lose more ground does not begin to describe it , How about Depressing , Disgusting , Disturbing ... I lucked out with my current job , unfortunately I had to leave my family back here in Michigan while I work in Texas ! These are extremely stressful times ! Most everyone I know in Michigan are either not working , barely working , or have relocated to other states ! 4.5 Million jobs lost for males , Mr. Obama ! Manufacturing jobs are gone , Mr. Obama ! China is perched to take over the U.S. , Mr. Obama ! Now would be the time to do something ! Mr. Obama !

One statistic that stands out in America's recession-stung economy is the unemployment rate for adult men: in April for the second month in a row it surged ahead of the national average to 9.4 percent versus 8.9 percent for all workers. The jobless rate for adult women was 7.1 percent.
The reasons are clear: male-heavy sectors such as construction and manufacturing have been hard hit. But the implications may be dire for the broader economy and hamper the recovery as families that once had male breadwinners struggle.
"In the 2001 recession, 51 percent of all job losses were for men. It was evenly split. But in this recession 80 percent of the jobs that have been lost have been men's," said Andrew Sum, a labor economics professor at Northeastern University who has studied this issue in detail.
Men also incurred about 80 percent of the job losses in the 1990-91 recession, but Sum said by his calculations the numbers this time were dramatically different. In the 1990-91 recession, men lost 1.037 million jobs. They have lost 4.5 million to date in this one

Workers sorry Vise-Grip plant moving to China
What a shame , Another good American brand gone to China ! Also with about 300 job's! What a kick in the nut's, Being told your loosing your job to China!
Vise-Grip's have been a wonderful tool ,I use them almost daily at work ! It is sad to see them go ! But I will never Buy Another pair again!!! Chinese tool's are made with Inferior Material's , and they are just useless to use ! you can't beat on them ,pry with them ,Nothing ! the metal they use is far to weak to do normal jobsite work with! LINCOLN, Neb. - Gary Oden has known for weeks that the plant where he has spent the last 19 years helping build Vise-Grips, one of Nebraska's most famous products, would be shutting down.
But he still wasn't completely prepared for the meeting at 5:30 Wednesday morning.
He and other employees were officially told the bad news, the kind that has stung workers in upper Midwestern states for years but is relatively uncommon in Nebraska: The DeWitt plant is shutting down so operations can be moved to China.
"It's a kick in the head," Oden said from a DeWitt bar where employees gathered to discuss the announcement and "try to forget about it."
Newell Rubbermaid owns the Vise-Grip brand.
A plant employee said managers were in meetings Wednesday and not available to comment.
About 300 people work at the plant, which for decades has anchored the southeast Nebraska town of DeWitt, population 572.
Roughly 40 of the employees make Unibit tool parts. According to Oden, managers said Unibit operations are moving to Maine.
The plant closure is sure to rattle more than the town's residents and the plant's workers.
Vise-Grip is an iconic name in Nebraska, one of the most famous products invented or developed in the state, along with Kool-Aid, raisin bran, and the Reuben sandwich.
The locking pliers have been manufactured in DeWitt for more than 80 years. DeWitt blacksmith and Danish immigrant William Petersen got a patent for the device in 1924.
By 1928, the company had more than 600 employees.
When Petersen died in 1962, his family took over. The business was eventually renamed American Tool Cos.
American Tool sold out in 2002 to Newell Rubbermaid, a minority owner since 1985. Since then, the DeWitt plant has operated under the name of Irwin Industrial Tools, a company American Tool bought in 1993.
Oden said employees were told that "to keep the Vise-Grip name competitive, they had to move to China."

Last Three Gorges Dam migrants evacuate as water rises
O.K. so it was only 1.4 million people displaced !how many people were killed because of this project ? when the Chinese started this project or economy was decent !within a year of construction , steel , concrete and fuel prices started soaring !steel prices alone Tripled ! all this created a shortage of some building materials within the United States , and shortly after that the economy started to slip , expensive buildings don't get built ! BEIJING (Reuters) - China has finished evacuating the last town to be submerged by the giant Three Gorges Dam, making way for water levels in the reservoir to rise to their final height of 175 meters above sea level, state media said.
The final residents of Gaoyang in central Hubei province left on Tuesday, the end of an exodus that began four years ago, the official Xinhua agency reported.
In total, some 1.4 million people have been moved to make way for the waters behind a 2,309-metre-long dam, the world's largest hydroelectric feat. It aims to tame the Yangtze River and provide clean, cheap energy for China's rapid development.
Critics of the dam say that pollution and geological threats are piling up. Scientists have said that rising waters in the 660-km (400-mile) long reservoir have strained already brittle slopes, triggering landslides, which may worsen when waters reach a maximum height.
A big mudslide hit a village in the Gaoyang area in April, sweeping into the local school's playground and part of the village. And a landslide nearby killed 35 people late last year.
But officials said last year that 12 billion yuan ($1.6 billion) had been allocated over past years to "geological repairs", and they were confident that such efforts were working.
Finished in 2003, the water level has risen in stages, reaching 156 meters in 2006. It is expected to reach its final height next year.
