MEXICO CITY (AP) — Four suspects have been killed in a shootout with police in the Mexican border state of Coahuila and five civilian bystanders have been wounded.
Two of the bystanders are in serious condition, while three are listed as stable at local hospitals.
The state attorney general's office said Friday the wounded people were traveling on the highway near the city of Torreon at the time of the confrontation.
The clash occurred late Thursday in a region where drug gangs have been active. The police came under attack as they were carrying out an investigation.
The office says three pistols and an assault rifle were seized at the scene. More than 22,700 people have been killed in drug-related violence in Mexico since late 2006.

JUAREZ -- Gunmen killed more than 20 people -- eight in one slaying -- on Wednesday in one of the bloodiest days of the year.
There were multiple shootings outside a nightclub, outside a convenience store and outside an elementary school as the violence flared up with fury.
Juárez police reported shootings as the night wore on, but it was not immediately known how many were dead. One news outlet dubbed the event "Black Wednesday."
More than 40 homicides have occurred since Monday despite a heavy presence of federal police and soldiers in the city.
Juárez Mayor José Reyes Ferriz said in a statement that the mass attacks were due to the worsening of a war between gangs linked to organize crime.
The most recent massacre involved the deaths of four young men in a car outside a convenience store off Cuatro Siglos boulevard, which runs parallel to the border highway in El Paso.
The day's single largest death toll was a shooting outside the Aristos bar near downtown.
The bloody bodies of eight men lay outside the bar amid bullet casings and glass beer bottles about 4:30 a.m. Wednesday.
The mayor said Aristos closed about 2 a.m., and the eight men had been outside the bar when the shooting happened. All of them were shot in the head, officials said.

Drug gangs kill nine in Honduras as violence grows

Suspected drug hitmen killed nine people in Tegucigalpa in one of the deadliest attacks in Honduras since Mexican drug kingpins escalated their war over smuggling routes, police said on Sunday.
Masked men with automatic weapons opened fire in the street in a poor area of the Honduran capital on Saturday night and then burst into two houses, killing seven men and two women, police said. Several bodies lay in the street, oozing blood, police said.
"These deaths were provoked by territorial disputes between drug traffickers," Tegucigalpa's police chief Mario Chamorro told reporters.
Since last year, drug violence has been rising in Honduras, a key transit route for Colombian cocaine heading to the United States, as powerful Mexican cartels fight over smuggling corridors through Mexico and Central America.
Some 1,600 people died in drug violence in Honduras in 2009. Honduran authorities say Mexico's top trafficker, Joaquin "Shorty" Guzman, is trying to crush rivals from the ruthless Gulf cartel from northeastern Mexico who are also fighting for control in Central America.

ACAPULCO, Mexico -- A series of shootings killed 24 people Saturday in a Pacific coast state plagued by drug gang violence. Nearly half died in one shootout between soldiers and armed men.
The gunbattle erupted when attackers opened fire on soldiers patrolling the small town of Ajuchitlan del Progreso, said Valentin Diaz, director of the Guerrero state investigative police. Ten gunmen and one soldier were killed, he said.
Diaz said the shootout broke out in the middle of the day in the center of the town as it was full of bystanders. He said state police were investigating and soldiers had reinforced security.
President Felipe Calderon has deployed tens of thousands of troops to Guerrero and other drug-trafficking hotspots across Mexico in an effort to root out cartels. Gang violence has surged since the crackdown began three years ago, claiming more than 17,900 lives.
Thirteen other people were killed in Guerrero in several other incidents before dawn, according to a state police report.
Two decapitated men were found on a scenic road packed with nightclubs in the resort city of Acapulco. Another man was found shot to death on the edge of the city.
Gunmen, meanwhile, killed five police officers on patrol in Tuncingo, a rural area outside Acapulco. In the same area, police found the bullet-ridden bodies of five other men, including two who had been

Several cartels are fighting over drug dealing turf and trafficking routes in Guerrero. Gang violence occurs almost every day in the state, but Saturday was unusually bloody.
Farther to the south in the state of Chiapas, which borders Guatemala, a grenade explosion inside a car killed one man and wounded another. State prosecutors said the dead man was holding the weapon when it exploded.
Investigators believe the victim belonged to the Zetas drug gang and had been about to throw the grenade at federal police offices in the state capital, Tuxtla Gutierrez.

(Reuters) - Thirteen people were killed in and around the Mexican beach resort of Acapulco early on Saturday in apparent drug-related violence, with four victims found beheaded, security officials said.
Five of those killed were police officers whose night-time patrol was attacked by gunmen on the outskirts of Acapulco, a Pacific Ocean resort popular with tourists, the security officials said in a statement.
The bullet-riddled bodies of eight other men were discovered in different areas around Acapulco, and four of them had been beheaded, the officials added.
Mexican President Felipe Calderon has staked his presidency on crushing drug gangs whose turf wars have killed about 19,000 people since he came to power in 2006. Some 45,000 troops and federal police have been deployed across the country.
Rival drug gangs in recent years sometimes have fought over territory in Acapulco, where any resurgence in violence would be bad news for the tourism industry. Last June, at least 18 people were killed in a shootout between drug gangs and soldiers in the city, which is home to around a million people in the state of Guerrero.
More violence apparently linked to drugs flared later on Saturday in Guerrero, with Mexican soldiers exchanging fire with gunmen, national newspaper Reforma reported. One soldier and 10 gunmen were killed in the town of Ajuchitlan del Progreso in northern Guerrero, the newspaper reported.

CIUDAD JUAREZ, Mexico (Reuters) - Suspected drug hitmen burst into a party and killed 13 high school students, in Ciudad Juarez Sunday, the latest massacre in one of the world's deadliest cities, the Mexican army said.
Gunmen jumped out of sport utility vehicles and fired at the students, who were celebrating victory in a local American football championship, in a house in the city across the border from El Paso, Texas, in the early hours of Sunday.

"The men drove up in SUVs, they were well-armed. They went into the house and shot at everyone, you could hear the gunfire all around," a neighbor at the scene said.
Army spokesman Enrique Torres said the victims were between 15 and 20 years old, and an additional 17 party-goers were wounded in the shooting, some critically.
"They were about 15 men, they closed off the surrounding streets and began shooting at the house as they moved inside," Torres said.
It was not immediately clear why the gunmen attacked the students. But drug hitmen have attacked parties in the city, searching for rivals, while police have reported that some teenagers have been involved in kidnapping others.
Ciudad Juarez is the bloodiest city in Mexico's drug war as rival cartels fight over markets and control of smuggling routes into the United States.

Several killed, 300 arrested in Tehran protests

Tehran, Iran (CNN) -- Several people were killed and more than 300 were arrested in anti-government protests in Tehran, Iran, on Sunday, Iran's Deputy Police Chief Ahmad Reza Radan said on state television station IRINN.
The toll was the result of clashes that broke out between demonstrators and security forces as large crowds gathered for Ashura, a major religious observance.
Four people were reported killed in the fighting, according to Iranian state-run Press TV. A French government statement put the number of fatalities at eight. With tight restrictions on international media, CNN could not independently verify the casualties.
The reformist Web site Parlemannews reported that one of the victims Sunday was Saeed Ali Mousavi, nephew of opposition leader Mir Hossein Mousavi. Press TV reported that the younger Mousavi was not a victim of Sunday's clashes.
Tehran Police Chief Azizollah Rajabzadeh denied any protesters were killed by security forces.

TEHRAN, Iran – State media reported Sunday at least 10 more deaths in post-election unrest and said authorities have arrested the daughter and four other relatives of former President Hashemi Rafsanjani, one of Iran's most powerful men.
The reports brought the official death toll for a week of unrest to at least 19. State television inside Iran said 10 were killed and 100 injured in clashes Saturday between demonstrators contesting the result of the June 12 election and black-clad police wielding truncheons, tear gas and water cannons.
However English-language Press TV, which is broadcast only outside the country, put the toll at 13 and labeled those who died "terrorists." There was no immediate explanation for the discrepancy.
Amnesty International cautioned that it was "perilously hard" to verify the casualty tolls.
"The climate of fear has cast a shadow over the whole situation," Amnesty's chief Iran researcher, Drewery Dyke, told The Associated Press. "In the 10 years I've been following this country, I've never felt more at sea than I do now. It's just cut off."
On Sunday, the streets of Tehran were eerily quiet.

Mexico says troops cut drug deaths in border city
while drug violence in Ciudad Juarez appears to be calming, killings are rising in the western state of Michoacan and in the normally peaceful northern state of Durango.

CIUDAD JUAREZ, Mexico (Reuters) - Mexico has dramatically cut drug murders in its most violent city on the U.S. border after deploying 7,500 soldiers earlier this month, the government said on Monday.
"The number of violent deaths linked to organized crime in Ciudad Juarez has fallen by more than 70 percent," Public Security Minister Genaro Garcia Luna said in a speech in the manufacturing city across from El Paso, Texas.
Drug violence stemming from a turf war between Mexico's most-wanted man, Joaquin "Shorty" Guzman, and the long dominant Juarez cartel escalated to unprecedented levels at the start of the year, with up to 15 drug murders a day.
Since the start of March, when the 7,500 troops and around 2,500 federal police rolled into the city and took over the municipal police and prisons, the drug murder rate has fallen to around two murders a day, police say.
President Felipe Calderon has about 45,000 soldiers across Mexico fighting cartels but has never before sent so many troops to one city.
But anti-drug experts say it is too early to say if drug crime in Ciudad Juarez, prized by traffickers for its location in the middle of the 2,000 mile border with road and rail links deep into the United States, has been controlled.
Police have found two buried bodies this month and a prominent lawyer was shot dead on a busy road close to military patrols on March 11, the same day Mexico's First Lady Margarita Zavala visited the city.
More than 6,300 people died in drug violence across Mexico last year and while drug violence in Ciudad Juarez appears to be calming, killings are rising in the western state of Michoacan and in the normally peaceful northern state of Durango.

Chihuahua state police reported at least 11 people killed in less than 20 hours between Friday evening and Saturday morning.
Around 7 p.m. Friday, two men in their 20s were found dead in a white 2008 GMC Yukon sport utility vehicle at Antonio J. Bermúdez and Ampere streets.
Also Friday night, Agustín Rentería Hernández, 35, a Juárez municipal police officer, was shot to death and an unidentified person was wounded at the intersection of Juan Kepler and Tecnológico Avenue.
After 3 a.m. Saturday, two waiters and a bouncer were killed while leaving the Satevó Bar at Manuel Gomez Morin and Manuel J. Cloutier streets.
Two of the victims were identified as Félix Andrés Ochoa Delgado,42 and José de la Rosa Chávez, 38.
Just before 4:50 a.m., Mario Alberto Chavira Durán, 37, was killed in his truck after leaving a bar on Manuel J. Clouthier Avenue in Colonia Salvacar.
A few minutes later, three charred bodies with tied hands were found in an SUV at Colonia Horizontes del Sur.
Around 11:25 a.m., a man between in his 30s was found dead among bushes at the intersection of the Jardines de Babilonia and Jardín de los Infantes streets, in the Jardines Residencial subdivision.
