Army base locked to solve 'serious concern'

Spooky stuff, there are 1200-1400 people at this base.

Msnbc
SALT LAKE CITY — The commander of an Army base in Utah, which works on how to protect troops against biological and chemical attacks, said it was on lockdown while trying to resolve a "serious concern."

Military weapons are tested at Dugway Proving Grounds, located about 85 miles southwest of Salt Lake City. The base, which covers around 80,000 acres of desert, according to KSL.com, has a primary mission of defending troops against biological and chemical attacks.

Botox: the latest tool in bio-terror?

Nancy-pelosi Uh-oh. With all the botox in that mug of Nancy Pelosi's she could be classified as a weapon of mass destruction.

<---- Botox gone bad.

From the Times of India:

Terrorists are exploiting a surging black market for the popular anti-wrinkle drug botox to develop bioterrorism weapons, experts say.

Al-Qaida is known to be seeking the deadly botulinum toxin that comprises the active ingredient in botox, and officials say they believe terrorists in Chechnya and elsewhere have established illegal factories to churn out the raw toxin, the Washington Post reported.

Kenneth Coleman, a biodefense expert, said his probe hints that a biologist of modest means and education can easily tap the counterfeit botox market to manufacture 1g of pure toxin, which would be sufficient to kill thousands of people.

The black market for botox has spawned illicit networks of suppliers who mostly work online and don't demand prescriptions. "There are no major obstacles," said Coleman, who authored a study for the James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies. "It's not hard to get the bacterial strains. But you don't even have to make it. You can buy it from makers to cause widespread harm."

US not prepared for WMD terrorist attack

Nearly a decade after September 11, 2001, one year after our original report, and one month after the Christmas Day bombing attempt, the United States is failing to address several urgent threats, especially bioterrorism,"

It seems the government isn't prepared for a lot eventualities including cyber attacks.

Breitbart

A bipartisan panel warned that the government had failed to adopt measures to counter the danger posed by extremists using WMD, saying the administration lacked plans for a rapid response to a possible biological attack.[...]

The findings came as a former CIA officer wrote in a report that Al-Qaeda's leaders have been working methodically since the 1990s to secure weapons that could inflict massive bloodshed.[...]

His report said Al-Qaeda's efforts to develop biological and nuclear weapons were not "empty rhetoric" and that the group's leaders appeared to have ruled out smaller-scale attacks with simpler devices.

"If Osama bin Laden and his lieutenants had been interested in employing crude chemical, biological and radiological materials in small-scale attacks, there is little doubt they could have done so by now," he wrote.

Arms expert warns new mind drugs eyed by military

"LOVE AND CUDDLE" DRUGS
I can see where this style of weapon could be useful , But a "love and cuddle " bio weapon against the Taliban or Al qaida just does not make sense !
They already do a lot of hugging and cuddling amongst themselves !

GENEVA (Reuters) - A leading expert on chemical and biological arms control called Wednesday for urgent efforts to stop new mind-altering drugs developed for medical purposes from being adopted by the military for use in warfare.

In an article in the U.S. journal Nature, British academic Malcolm Dando said civilian researchers in many countries seemed largely unaware of the danger and urged quick action to adapt a key arms pact to head it off.

"In the past 20 years, modern warfare has changed from predominantly large-scale clashes of armies to messy civil strife," wrote Dando, citing the Bosnian conflict of the mid-1990s and current fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan.

"LOVE AND CUDDLE" DRUGS

Fentanyl, a strong painkiller, Dando said, was deployed in a still unrevealed mixture by Russian special forces in 2002 to subdue Chechen militants who had seized a Moscow theater.

But its use led to the deaths of over 120 hostages among the theater-goers and Russian commandoes who went into the theater with protective gear shot dead the incapacitated hostage-takers.

Other agents being developed, said Dando, include oxytocin, dubbed the "love and cuddle" chemical which induces trust and whose emergence "opens up the possibility of a drug that could be used to manipulate people's emotions in a military context."

Panel warns biological attack likely by 2013

Biological weapons by 2013? Wow ,what to do ? It seems someone thinks this is most likely going to happen from within the U.S. , we have already seen this a few times ( mostly unsuccessful ) All we need now is some Jihadist who works at the local Biological research facility to go Insano and release some nasty Plague , while the government try's to figure out what to do about it !
And why do they need to recreate the flu strain that killed so many people???

WASHINGTON (AP) — The United States can expect a terrorist attack using nuclear or more likely biological weapons before 2013, reports a bipartisan commission in a study being briefed Tuesday to Vice President-elect Joe Biden. It suggests the Obama administration bolster efforts to counter and prepare for germ warfare by terrorists.

"Our margin of safety is shrinking, not growing," states the report, obtained by The Associated Press. It is scheduled to be publicly released Wednesday.

The commission is also encouraging the new White House to appoint one official on the National Security Council to exclusively coordinate U.S. intelligence and foreign policy on combating the spread of nuclear and biological weapons.

The report of the Commission on the Prevention of WMD Proliferation and Terrorism, led by former Sens. Bob Graham of Florida and Jim Talent of Missouri, acknowledges that terrorist groups still lack the needed scientific and technical ability to make weapons out of pathogens or nuclear bombs. But it warns that gap can be easily overcome, if terrorists find scientists willing to share or sell their know-how.
....

"The United States should be less concerned that terrorists will become biologists and far more concerned that biologists will become terrorists," the report states.

The commission believes biological weapons are more likely to be obtained and used before nuclear or radioactive weapons because nuclear facilities are more carefully guarded. Civilian laboratories with potentially dangerous pathogens abound, however, and could easily be compromised.

"The biological threat is greater than the nuclear; the acquisition of deadly pathogens, and their weaponization and dissemination in aerosol form, would entail fewer technical hurdles than the theft or production of weapons-grade uranium or plutonium and its assembly into an improvised nuclear device," states the report.

It notes that the U.S. government's counterproliferation activities have been geared toward preventing nuclear terrorism. The commission recommends the prevention of biological terrorism be made a higher priority.

Study chairman Graham said anthrax remains the most likely biological weapon. However, he told the AP that contagious diseases — like the flu strain that killed 40 million at the beginning of the 20th century — are looming threats. That virus has been recreated in scientific labs, and there remains no inoculation to protect against it if is stolen and released.

Graham said the threat of a terrorist attack using nuclear or biological weapons is growing "not because we have not done positive things but because adversaries are moving at an even faster pace to increase their access" to those materials.

He noted last week's rampage by a small group of gunmen in Mumbai.

"If those people had had access to a biological or nuclear weapon they would have multiplied by orders of magnitude the deaths they could have inflicted," he said.

Al-Qaida remains the only terrorist group judged to be actively intent on conducting a nuclear attack against the United States, the report notes. It is not yet capable of building such a weapon and has yet to obtain one. But that could change if a nuclear weapons engineer or scientist were recruited to al-Qaida's cause, the report warns.

The report says the potential nexus of terrorism, nuclear and biological weapons is especially acute in Pakistan.

"Were one to map terrorism and weapons of mass destruction today, all roads would intersect in Pakistan," the report states.

In fact, commission members were forced to cancel their trip to Pakistan this fall. The Islamabad Marriott Hotel that commission members were to stay in was blown up by terrorist bombs just hours before they were to check in.

"We think time is not our ally. The (United States) needs to move with a sense of urgency," Graham said.
