Oct. 28 (Bloomberg) -- Kenyan forces killed at least nine al-Shabaab fighters in their first engagement with the al-Qaeda- linked militia since beginning an incursion into the country 13 days ago, the army said.
Two Kenyan soldiers were injured, one critically, in the fighting that took place yesterday near Tabda, about 470 kilometers (292 miles) southwest of the capital, Mogadishu, Major Emmanuel Chirchir, spokesman for the Kenya Defence Forces, said in an e-mailed statement. The Somalia towns of Busar and Buarahache were captured and an al-Shabaab logistical and training camp at Anole was also attacked, he said.

(CNN) -- Twelve people were injured when someone either placed or threw a grenade into a Nairobi night club early Monday morning, Kenyan police said.
Police have not linked the attack to any particular group, but it comes a day after the U.S. Embassy in Kenya warned it had credible information of an imminent terror attack.
"We have not yet linked attacks to anybody as we are still investigating," said police spokesman Charles Owino. "We will give you an answer when we're satisfied with what we have. It could be Al-Shabaab or an individual. We are still investigating."
In its warning over the weekend, the U.S.Embassy did not offer details on who might carry out such an attack, but said it has taken measures to limit official U.S. government visits. It urged its citizens to consider deferring travel to Kenya.

War and drought in Somalia are leading an unprecedented number of people to flee across the border into Kenya, an aid agency says.
Save the Children is reporting that every day, about 1,300 people - at least 800 of them children - are arriving at the Dadaab refugee camp.
The monthly number of new arrivals has more than doubled in a year, it says.
Aid workers at the camp say the children are exhausted, malnourished and severely dehydrated.
The situation in Somalia is exacerbated by the conflict between Islamists of al-Shabaab and Somalia's transitional government, backed by African Union peacekeepers.
The United Nations refugee agency says there are 117,497 Somalis who have also crossed into Ethiopia - 31,000 in the past five months fleeing from drought and conflict.

(Reuters) - Seven soccer fans were killed and dozens more were injured in a stampede at a match between two of Kenya's top teams, an ambulance operator said on Saturday.
The stampede took place inside the Nyayo National stadium in the capital Nairobi during a match between AFC Leopards and Gor Mahia.
"Seven people are dead. People tried to force entry during the match because they didn't want to pay," David Matee, a radio operator with the St John's Ambulance, told Reuters.
At least 30 people were hurt in the crush, 14 of them critically, Matee said.

A Republican lawmaker is accusing the White House of “unconscionable” and “illegal” acts for its role in Kenya's referendum on a new constitution, which would legalize abortion in the country for the first time.
Rep. Chris Smith of New Jersey cited a report by the U.S. Agency for International Development, or USAID, which estimated that more than $23 million in U.S. taxpayer funds have been spent on the referendum, and Smith and other conservatives have complained that at least some of that money has been spent in sport of the proposed constitution, possibly violating U.S. law.
“Under no circumstances should the U.S. government take sides,” Smith said at a news conference Wednesday. “Yet that is precisely what the Obama administration has done.”
He and other lawmakers accuse the Obama administration of offering incentives to Kenya to approve the controversial new constitution, promising that passage would “allow money to flow” into the nation's coffers. A federal law known as the Siljander Amendment makes it illegal for the U.S. government to lobby on abortion in other countries.
“We were unable to get any information prior to asking for those (USAID) reports,” Smith said. “There’s been no transparency in this process.”

Addressing faithful in Masjid Sakina Mombasa, Sheikh Idriss claimed the Al-Shabaab and Hizbul Islam fighters are enlisting Kenya youth in the camps through well-connected agents.
He said the militants mostly target jobless Somalia youth in Muslim-dominated regions in the country while those recruited for Somalia government are being enticed with money to join training.

Little Mogadishu has become a port through which Somali insurgents raise money and recruit fighters, especially for the militant group, Al Shabab, which has been labeled an Al Qaeda-linked terrorist organization by the US government.
"What we know is that Al Shabab is very popular in Eastleigh," says Roland Marchal, senior research fellow at the Paris-based National Center for Scientific Research. "Al Shabab has been able at different moments to bring a number of people in Eastleigh to fight in Somalia. It's very likely that a number of economic operators in Eastleigh try to collect money and support this organization." [...]

The transfers are hard to track, Mr. Marchal says, because they are generally small payments that do not attract much attention.
But money also gets to Somalia in other ways. He lays out an example: Sympathizers of insurgents knowingly buy sugar from certain vendors in Kenya. They send that sugar to Somalia, where it is resold. None of these activities are illegal, but "then the money disappears," Marchal says. "It's very efficient.... There is no profit, no fee. [All the money] goes to the organization. This is untraceable for anybody."
No entity in Eastleigh has been under more suspicion than the Sixth Street mosque, a small, unimposing building on top of a FedEx shop, hidden among laundry-cluttered balconies.
The mosque is among Al Shabab's main fundraisers in Eastleigh, according to a Nairobi-based official of the African Union (AU) peacekeeping force in Somalia who spoke anonymously because he is not authorized to talk to the media.

MOMBASA, KENYA (Reuters) - Kenyan police are questioning four Dutch passport-holders who were arrested on suspicion of aiding Somalia's al Shabaab insurgents, a local government official said on Wednesday.
The four men -- three who were born in Morocco and the fourth in Somalia -- were stopped by police on Monday while on their way to Kiunga on the Kenya-Somalia border.[...]
The four suspects, all aged 21 according to their passports, said they were tourists despite the fact that there are no tourist attractions where they were arrested, Ikua said.
"They had hired a tractor which was taking them to Kiunga, on the Kenya-Somalia border. Their journey is definitely suspect and we believe their activity is connected to the al Shabaab group in Somalia," he said.

“ If you attack us(Kenya), we will launch suicide attacks in Nairobi and we will destroy the tall, glass buildings in Nairobi,” said sheik Hassan Yacqub Ali.
Kenyan troops were deployed in several border towns on Saturday. The speaker of the Somali parliament Aden Mohamed Nor requested from neighboring countries to send troops to Somalia on Saturday and the cabinet endorsed the decision.

MOMBASA, Kenya (Reuters) - Kenyan prosecutors charged 17 Somali men with piracy on Thursday, a day after the U.S. Navy handed them over to authorities there.
There are now 111 suspected pirates being held in Kenya, and police say the influx is clogging jails and courts. Local Muslim leaders say Kenya should not be used as a "dumping ground" and foreign navies should take charge of the people they arrest.
Prosecutors told a court in the port city of Mombasa that the 17 men were arrested as they attacked the Egyptian-flagged merchant ship MV Amira.

From Daily NationKenya will face increasing danger of terror attacks in the coming year as “Islamic extremists” plot to hit US targets, President Barack Obama’s intelligence director warned last week.
“We judge the terrorist threat to US interests in East Africa, primarily from al-Qaeda and al-Qaeda-affiliated Islamic extremists in Somalia and Kenya, will increase in the next year,” Dennis Blair, overseer of US spy agencies, told the Senate.
Al-Qaeda’s East Africa network is continuing to plan operations against American, European and local targets, Mr Blair added.
Of particular concern, he suggested, is the Somalia Islamist group al-Shabaab, branded by the US as a terrorist organisation.

US Navy Task 151 to hand over captured pirates to Kenya
Looks like I was wrong when I said that Yemen would probably be the country the pirates are sent to. Does Kenya have the death penalty? Daily NationPirates arrested in the Gulf of Aden will be prosecuted in Kenya, Prime Minister Raila Odinga announced on Monday.
The PM revealed that Kenya had, a few days ago, signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the US Government to this effect.
Details of the agreement, however, remain sketchy.
