The UN would temporarily re-deploy 11 staff members to Kabul while their office in Mazar-e Sharif was rebuilt, he said, but there would be no evacuation.

Friday's attack, followed by a series of protests on Saturday, were sparked by the actions of Christian preacher Terry Jones who supervised the burning of the Koran in front of about 50 people at a church in Florida on March 20, according to his website.
The spokesman for the Kandahar governor, Zalmay Ayoubi, said at least nine people were killed and over 70 injured in Saturday's violence in the city in the spiritual heartland of the Taliban.

Thousands of Christians have been forced to flee their homes in Western Ethiopia after Muslim extremists set fire to roughly 50 churches and dozens of Christian homes.
At least one Christian has been killed, many more have been injured and anywhere from 3,000 to 10,000 have been displaced in the attacks that began March 2 after a Christian in the community of Asendabo was accused of desecrating the Koran.
The violence escalated to the point that federal police forces sent to the area two weeks ago were initially overwhelmed by the mobs. Government spokesman Shimelis Kemal told Voice of America police reinforcements had since restored order and 130 suspects had been arrested and charged with instigating religious hatred and violence.

Tensions flare during 2nd day of muslim riots in Athens
An update to this story. During the 2nd day of riots in Athens, over the alleged desecration of a quran by a police officer, a shop used by muslims for prayer has been firebombed. Deutsche Welle
At least three people were hospitalized in Athens on Saturday morning after a firebomb attack on a shop used as a Muslim prayer center for immigrants.
Police said unknown assailants smashed the shop's windows and poured gasoline inside before igniting it, a police source said.

The protest was prompted by reports that a policeman tore up a copy of the Qur'an while checking the identity papers of four Syrian immigrants. These two guys are getting 20 years because they mistranslated the quran. Its a crime to improperly rewrite the quran in Afghanistan because the highest law there is islamic law. But, are these muslim aware that there are over 20 versions of the quran? So that begs the question which version is really the word of allah brought down by arch angel Gabriel? Answer...none. The prosecution said the translation contained mistakes and called for the defendants to be executed.

APThe pocket-size translation of the Quran has already landed six men in prison in Afghanistan and left two of them begging judges to spare their lives. They're accused of modifying the Quran and their fate could be decided Sunday in court.

The trial illustrates what critics call the undue influence of hardline clerics in Afghanistan, a major hurdle as the country tries to establish a lawful society amid war and militant violence.
The book appeared among gifts left for the cleric at a major Kabul mosque after Friday prayers in September 2007. It was a translation of the Quran into one of Afghanistan's languages, with a note giving permission to reprint the text as long as it was distributed for free.
Some of the men of the mosque said the book would be useful to Afghans who didn't know Arabic, so they took up a collection for printing. The mosque's cleric asked Ahmad Ghaws Zalmai, a longtime friend, to get the books printed.
But as some of the 1,000 copies made their way to conservative Muslim clerics in Kabul, whispers began, then an outcry.
Many clerics rejected the book because it did not include the original Arabic verses alongside the translation. It's a particularly sensitive detail for Muslims, who regard the Arabic Quran as words given directly by God. A translation is not considered a Quran itself, and a mistranslation could warp God's word.

SEOUL: LG Electronics said Tuesday that it was marketing a new large-screen plasma display television in the Middle East that allowed users to read and listen to the Koran, the Muslim holy book.
LG said the television, which comes in 106-centimeter and 127-centimeter, or 42-inch and 50-inch, versions is the first of its kind in the world. The company began selling it in conjunction with the Islamic holy month of Ramadan, which started at the beginning of September.
Koranic verses can be read on screen and listened to via software embedded in the television. All 114 chapters of the holy book are included, and as many as 10 pages can be bookmarked via remote control, LG said.
