Riot police are patrolling in Urumqi in China's Xinjiang region on the first anniversary of ethnic riots that claimed the lives of almost 200 people.
The streets are reported to be quieter than usual. Thousands of CCTV cameras have been set up in public places.
A government-run website said that all police leave had been cancelled.
The clashes that erupted on 5 July 2009 between Uighur Muslims and Han Chinese were the region's worst ethnic violence in decades.
The fighting ended after huge numbers of troops were deployed in the remote western region.
After the riots, the government suspended the region's communication links to the rest of the world, including international phone calls, text messaging and the internet.

BEIJING - CHINA says it expects new attacks by separatists seeking independence for the traditionally Turkic Muslim region of Xinjiang after deadly ethnic violence there last year.
Despite massive pressure from security forces, separatists will continue to refine their methods and seek opportunities, the region's governor, Mr Nur Bekri, told reporters yesterday.
'They will not easily accept failure. They will step up their separate attempts and change their ways and means to make new trouble for us,' Mr Bekri said.
Speaking at a rare news conference on the sidelines of the national legislative session in Beijing, Mr Bekri repeated China's claims that deadly July riots in Xinjiang's capital, Urumqi, were orchestrated by overseas activists for the rights of Uighurs, Xinjiang's majority ethnic group.
China has provided little direct evidence to back up the accusation, and those activists have denied involvement in the violence, saying they believe in a peaceful struggle for greater Uighur rights.
Nearly 200 people were killed and 1,600 wounded in the riots, according to the government, in the worst ethnic unrest in China in decades.

China says 140 dead in Xinjiang unrest
URUMQI, China (Reuters) - At least 140 people have been killed in
rioting in the capital of China's northwestern region of Xinjiang, with
the government blaming exiled Muslim separatists for the area's worst
case of ethnic unrest in years.
Hundreds of rioters have been arrested, the official Xinhua news agency
reported, after rock-throwing Uighurs took to the streets of the
regional capital on Sunday, some burning and smashing vehicles and
confronting ranks of anti-riot police.
Urumqi residents were unable to access the Internet on Monday, several said.
"The city is basically under martial law," Yang Jin, a dried fruit
merchant, said by telephone.
Theunrest underscores the volatile ethnic tensions that have accompanied
China's growing economic and political stake in its western frontiers.
Asenior official swiftly delivered the government claim that the unrest
was the work of extremist forces abroad, signaling a security crackdown
in the strategic region near Pakistan and central Asia.
LiZhi, the Communist Party boss of Urumqi told a news conference that the
death toll from the rioting had risen to 140, the semi-official China
News Agency said. Xinhua said 816 people were injured and hospitalized.
