Although no laws prevent Malaysia's Muslim majority from marking the occasion with dinner dates and roses, officials have mounted a campaign insisting that such romantic gestures might tempt young people into having premarital sex.
Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin said late Saturday that the government was not trying to demean Valentine's Day, but stressed that it was "not suitable" for Muslims, who comprise nearly two-thirds of Malaysia's 28 million people.
His comments came after the government-run Malaysian Islamic Development Department, which handles religious policies, launched a publicity campaign Friday called "Mind the Valentine's Day Trap" and handed leaflets advising Muslim university students to avoid Monday's celebration.

Malaysian authorities said Wednesday that officials caned four Muslim men and, for the first time, three Muslim women this month after being found guilty of having sex out of wedlock.
The move to cane the women under the country's Islamic Shariah laws has raised fresh concerns about the growing political and judicial influence of Islam in what traditionally has been one of the world's more moderate Muslim nations.
The vibrant, resource-rich country came under intense international scrutiny last year after a Shariah court sentenced 32-year-old Kartika Sari Dewi Shukarno to be caned after she was caught drinking beer in a hotel bar. Many moderate Muslims and non-Muslim Malaysians saw that verdict as reflecting the growing reach of Islam in Malaysia over the past several years, although Prime Minister Najib Razak has said he won't let Malaysia drift toward becoming an Islamist state.
The caning of Ms. Kartika, who is a Muslim, still hasn't been carried out despite her requests to the Islamic courts to get it over with.
Wednesday's announcement that three Muslim women were caned on Feb. 9 for having illicit sex thus came as a shock to many Malaysians. "This was a big a surprise. We had no idea this was going to happen," said Ragunath Kesavan, president of the Malaysian Bar Council. "We were always told Ms. Kartika would be the first."
Home Minister Hishammuddin Hussein waited more than a week before announcing the punishment at a news conference following the government's weekly cabinet meeting Wednesday. He didn't provide details of the women's identities. Later in the day, Mr. Hishammuddin said in a statement that four men also were sentenced and caned in connection with the case. They also weren't identified.
All seven were found guilty of illicit sex and sentenced by a Shariah court in the Kuala Lumpur area between December and January.

No one was hurt in the latest upsurge of violence which saw two churches firebombed and a third dubbed with black paint in a row sparked by a court decision allowing non-Muslims to use the word "Allah" in place of God in their literature and worship.
Four other churches in Kuala Lumpur were firebombed on Friday and Saturday amid outrage in the Muslim-majority country over the court's move to overturn a government prohibition on the use of Allah by Christians when using the Malay language.
Hundreds of worshippers from one of the churches that was partially destroyed last week gathered for a service at a makeshift prayer hall and urged an end to the violence.
Earlier a petrol bomb was hurled at the All Saints Church in Taping, in central Perak state, before worshippers arrived. The building was not badly damaged, but scorch marks were found in the hall.
At St Louis Catholic Church, also in Taping, a broken bottle of petrol with a wick was discovered. It failed to explode. In the southern Malacca state the outer wall of a Baptist church was splashed with paint.

Four Christian churches in Malaysia have been attacked amid tensions over the use of the word "Allah" by non-Muslims in the country.
Attackers threw a molotov cocktail which failed to ignite at a church in the state of Selangor on Friday afternoon, media reports said.

Hishammuddin Hussein, the home minister, appealed for calm and moved to assure religious groups in the country that "they are safe".

"We want to assure the public that this was not a co-ordinated and well-planned action."

KOTA BHARU, Malaysia (Reuters) - The end of the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan this weekend could see Islamic authorities in Malaysia carry out the country's first caning sentence on a woman, a punishment that is fast gaining support.
Although the penalty has been condemned by rights groups and is being reviewed by an Islamic appeal court, it is endorsed by conservative Muslims whose influence is on the rise in this multi-racial, Southeast Asian country of 27 million people.
Kartika Sari Dewi Shukarno, 32, was caught drinking beer in a hotel and faces six strokes of the cane.
There are concerns the caning could damage Malaysia's image at a time when it is liberalizing its economy to attract more foreign investment. But for many people in Kelantan, a poor rural state, it is more important to see justice done.
"Her punishment is not severe, it will educate people. It will be a good lesson especially after Ramadan," said Runaidah Abdul Hamid, a housewife, as she bought vegetables to prepare for the breaking of the fast during Ramadan.
"Kartika (Shukarno) will become more Muslim," said Rahayu Nizam Nawi, a vegetable seller in northern Kelantan's capital, Khota Bharu.
Shukarno said she accepts the six strokes of the cane and has called for the sentence despite moves by the government, including Prime Minister Najib Razak, to review the punishment.
Malaysia practices a dual-track legal system, with Islamic criminal and family laws applicable only to Muslims, running alongside civil laws. If Shukarno is caned, she will be fully clothed.

When a proposal to shift the Sri Mariamman Hindu temple to a new area was floated by the government, local residents rushed out of the Shah Alam State Mosque after Friday prayers carrying a severed cow's head. Muslim community leaders threatened bloodshed against Hindus if the temple was built and then threw the cow's head at the door of the building for the state Secretariat while kicking and spitting upon the carcass. Police did not intervene in the protest and have yet to identify any of the leaders of the Muslim mob, a stark contrast from the disruption of any illegal gathering that is held in Malaysia.

Police probe Al-Islam over report offensive to Catholics
A priest in Malaysia has filed a complaint against an islamic magazine, al Islam, claiming an article offends the Christian religion. Specifically the priest was referring to a half eaten Holy Host.
But what brothers me about the article is that the authors were investigating whether apostates from islam were attending the church. The Sun Daily
The magazine, Al Islam which is published by Utusan Karya Sdn Bhd had carried a report written by two of its journalists who went "undercover" for mass at the St.Anthony Church on Jalan Pudu.Apostasy in islam is punishable by death. 'Whoever changed his Islamic religion, then kill him.'"
The reporters, one of whom was identified as Muhd Ridhwan Abdul Jalil had apparently gone to investigate a claim alleging that Malay Muslims who had committed apostasy were attending mass or prayers at the church.
On July 8th after coming across t he story in the magazine, two parishners of the Cathedral of the Holy Spirit Church in Penang, Joachim Francis Xavier and Sudhagaran Stanley lodged a police report at the Patani police station in Penang urging police to probe the magazine and the journalist.IMO, everyone should have the right to criticize religions, and anything else for that matter, without the fear of arrest or any other punishment.
Federal police CID director, Comm Datuk Seri Mohd Bakri Zinin said the case was transfered to Dang Wangi police as the alleged act had taken place in their jurisdiction.
He said several people have been inteviewed over the report and the case has been classified under Section 298 (a) of the Penal Code for uttering words or actions with deliberate intent to wound religious feelings.

She was detained by police for a few days but no charges were filed. In August, lawyers were forced to abandon a conference on religious conversion after protesters stormed the forum.
The statement reiterates the supremacy of Islam, the special position of the Malays and the guarantee to protect minority rights — all enshrined in Malaysia's constitution.

His wife, Lee Abdulah, said the founder of the controversial Malaysia Today website had been sent to the Kamunting detention centre in northern Perak state under a detention order signed by the Home Minister.
Abdulah said police had told her "he will remain there for two years with no trail.
