The invasion came one day after Kenyan defence officials said the country has the right to defend itself against al-Shabaab militants after a string of kidnappings inside Kenya. Four Europeans have been abducted and one killed.
Witnesses in the Somali town of Dhobley on Monday said an estimated 40 Kenyan military vehicles entered the town on Sunday. Ali Abdullahi, a resident in Dhobley, said the army vehicles were towing what he described as "big guns."
No large-scale fighting has yet broken out, the residents said.

Somalia's militant Islamist group al-Shabab is in crisis, as it battles to cope with the famine that is far worse in areas under its control than other partsof the country, leading to reports of splits in the leadership of the al-Qaeda-linked group.
The famine has forced hundreds of thousands of people to flee the Lower Shabelle and Bakool regions in search of food.
Many are escaping to the capital, Mogadishu, where over the weekend the group made what it called a tactical withdrawal of its forces from the northern suburbs that were under its control.
Others are walking for days to reach camps in neighbouring Kenya and Ethiopia, arch-foes of al-Shabab.
"It is not a good picture for al-Shabab," says US-based Somali journalist Abdirahman Aynte, who is writing a book on the movement.
"Nearly 500,000 people have left. Al-Shabab cannot do anything about it. They have become bystanders."

An al-Shabab spokesman says the group began leaving its positions in Mogadishu late Friday. He called it a strategic move to prevent a counter attack. He said al-Shabab will remain in other towns in southern Somalia.
Al-Shabab has been fighting to topple the Somali government. It has also been trying to prevent food aid from being dispersed to millions of victims of drought and famine across Somalia

Three new areas are now affected by the Al Shabab imposed famine, I say Al Shabab imposed because if they were to not be such big jackasses; the people of Somalia would be receiving the food and aid they need.

The famine gripping parts of southern Somalia has spread to three new areas of the country, with the entire south likely to be declared a famine zone within the next six weeks, the United Nations said Wednesday.
Acute malnutrition and death rates have surpassed famine thresholds in the Balcad and Cadale districts of Middle Shabelle and among the refugee populations in Mogadishu and the Afgoye corridor, according to a statement from the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization’s Somalia food security unit.
The statement called the current humanitarian response “inadequate,” attributing to it “ongoing access restrictions and difficulties in scaling up emergency assistance programs, as well as funding gaps.”
Much of southern Somalia is controlled by al-Shabab Islamist militants who last year banned food aid and forced many aid groups out of the region, exacerbating the drought crisis.
Famine is expected to persist across southern Somalia until the end of the year, the statement said.

Babies are dying because of the lack of equipment and medicine. Some get hooked up to adult-size intravenous drips — pediatric versions are hard to find — and their compromised bodies cannot handle the volume of fluid.
Most parents do not have money for medicine, so entire families sit on old-fashioned cholera beds, with basketball-size holes cut out of the middle, taking turns going to the bathroom as diarrhea streams out of them.

Two weeks after al-Shabab said a ban on certain aid groups working in Somalia would be lifted, the Islamist rebel movement has announced that the ban remains in place, the AFP news agency has said.
The group also rejected a United Nations declaration that parts of the country had been hit by the worst famine seen in the area for 20 years.
Al Shabab, which controls parts of the affected region, accused the UN of exaggerating the severity of the drought and using it as propaganda.
"Those earlier banned groups are not welcome to serve in our area of control," al-Shabab spokesperson Sheikh Ali Mohamud Rage said in a broadcast on the Islamist Al Furqaan radio on Friday.
"There is drought in Somalia but not famine - what is declared by the UN is 100 per cent false."
"The declaration of famine is political and is a lie with hidden agendas," he added, saying only that there is "a shortage of rain".
The UN's World Food Programme (WFP), one of the aid groups banned by al- Shabab, said on Friday that it would fly aid into the capital "within days".
Somalia is the worst affected country in the drought-hit Horn of Africa region, where the UN says that more than 3.7 million people are at risk of starvation.

Somali terror suspect goes on trial in New York
The Obama administration would rather let terrorists go then actually prosecute them, that is why they want to bring them into U.S. courts, they will get the full benefits of being a U.S. Citizen in court.
Instead of sending them to Gitmo where they belong and having them prosecuted there by a court that will at least convict them of their deeds, in a U.S. court they get to run their mouths and have a chance to con-volute and twist everything, and ultimately be set free within the U.S.
I much rather prefer the kill first method.

Ahmed Abdulkadir Warsame was seized in the Gulf of Aden in April and was then interrogated for two months on a US warship before his trial in America.

War and drought in Somalia are leading an unprecedented number of people to flee across the border into Kenya, an aid agency says.
Save the Children is reporting that every day, about 1,300 people - at least 800 of them children - are arriving at the Dadaab refugee camp.
The monthly number of new arrivals has more than doubled in a year, it says.
Aid workers at the camp say the children are exhausted, malnourished and severely dehydrated.
The situation in Somalia is exacerbated by the conflict between Islamists of al-Shabaab and Somalia's transitional government, backed by African Union peacekeepers.
The United Nations refugee agency says there are 117,497 Somalis who have also crossed into Ethiopia - 31,000 in the past five months fleeing from drought and conflict.

Somali Interior Minister Abdi Shakur Sheikh Hassan has been killed in a suicide attack at his home in the capital, Mogadishu.
Officials say the bomber was his own teenage niece, who had joined the Islamist militant group al-Shabab.
The group said it carried out the attack and said more would follow.

"We tell the American President Barack Obama to embrace Islam before we come to his country," said Fuad Mohamed "Shongole" Qalaf.
Al-Shabab has not yet launched an attack outside Africa but Western intelligence has long been worried because the group targeted young Somali-Americans for recruitment. About 20 have traveled to Somalia for training and at least three were used as suicide bombers inside Somalia. Al-Shabab holds most of southern and central Somalia and has the support of hundreds of foreign fighters, mostly radicalized East Africans.
It seeks to overthrow the weak U.N.-backed government, which is protected by 8,000 Ugandan and Burundian African Union peacekeepers.

A California woman has been charged with providing money and personnel to a terrorist group in Somalia to help carry out killings in the African nation, according to a federal indictment obtained Monday.
Nima Ali Yusuf supported al-Shabab, an Al Qaeda-linked militia trying to create an Islamic state in Somalia, federal prosecutor Sabrina Feve said.
Yusuf was the fourth person charged in the past month in San Diego with helping al-Shabab. Authorities described her as a lawful permanent resident of the U.S.
Yusuf was charged in the indictment with conspiracy to provide material support to terrorists, conspiracy to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization and making a false statement to a government
The others charged in San Diego were accused of raising money then routing the funds to the radical Islamist group.

An Islamist militia in Somalia has publicly shot dead two teenage girls by firing squad after accusing them of spying for the government, it emerged today.
The victims – reported to be 18 or younger – were killed in front of hundreds of residents in Beledweyne, near the border with Ethiopia.
The town is controlled by the hardline al-Shabaab rebel movement, which has become notorious for its extreme form of punishment, including stonings and cross-amputations, for various crimes, usually adultery and theft.
The killings, which happened on Wednesday, are believed to the first instance of any females in Somalia being executed for spying. The girls' relatives denied they were guilty of the charge.
According to eyewitnesses accounts, a Shabaab "judge" sentenced the girls to death shortly before they were executed. No evidence was presented, and the two were not allowed legal representation.

WASHINGTON -- Efforts by terrorists abroad to radicalize and recruit U.S. residents present new security threats, three top Obama administration officials told Congress on Wednesday.
The threat posed by homegrown extremists shows that the battle against terrorism has become more complex in the past year, underscoring the challenges of pinpointing and blocking plots, said Michael Leiter, director of the National Counterterrorism Center.
"Groups affiliated with Al Qaeda are now actively targeting the United States and looking to use Americans or Westerners who are able to remain undetected by heightened security measures," FBI Director Robert Mueller told the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee.
It appears that "domestic radicalization and homegrown extremism" is becoming more pronounced, Mueller said.
Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said Al Qaeda has inspired an array of terrorist organizations.

(Reuters) - Eleven insurgent militiamen were killed by their own bombs when they went off prematurely in Somalia's capital, the government said on Saturday.
The mostly foreign militiamen died in two separate incidents, 10 while preparing a car bomb and another as he planted a roadside bomb, the information ministry said.
Al Qaeda-linked al Shabaab and another Islamist militia have been fighting Somalia's Western-backed government since the start of 2007, launching frequent attacks on its bases in the capital.
"They are three Pakistanis, two Indians, one Afghani, one Algerian, and two Somalis, (and) a leader who was in charge of praying for suicide bombers before they were dispatched," the ministry said in a statement.
Police arrested two men who had been guarding the militant digging a hole at a Mogadishu bridge for the roadside bomb and confiscated a bag with materials for making explosives.

(Reuters) - One of the suspected masterminds of last month's bomb attacks on Uganda's capital Kampala said on Thursday his anger at the United States spurred his involvement in the plot, adding that it was intended to kill Americans.
Issa Ahmed Luyima, 33, a former librarian, was one of four Ugandan suspects paraded in front of journalists by the east African nation's Chieftancy of Military Intelligence (CMI) before he made a public confession.
"I was reluctant to pick on Ugandans. My rage was with the Americans whom I deemed responsible for all the suffering of Muslims around the world ... we thought they are the ones who planted the TGF (interim government) in Somalia," Luyima said.
He said he regretted the loss of Ugandan lives when three bombs ripped through a bar at a rugby club and an Ethiopian restaurant where soccer fans were watching the World Cup final on July 11.

The FBI has arrested or indicted more than a dozen Somali-Americans in two cities as part of a sweeping investigation in the recruitment of young men for a terrorist group in Somalia, sources familiar with the investigation told NPR. The people arrested are thought to have recruited and raised money for a Somali militia called al-Shabab.
The arrests are just the latest turn in a long-running investigation into the disappearance of young men from a number of U.S. cities. NPR first reported on the case two years ago, after more than two dozen young Somalis from the Minneapolis area had been recruited and sent to Somalia by the group. Some of the young men who traveled to Somalia have since returned to the U.S. At least six of the Minneapolis Somalis who joined al-Shabab are thought to have been killed in the fighting there.
An indictment against Omar Hammami, a young man from Alabama who joined al-Shabab several years ago and starred in a recruitment video, will be unsealed Thursday, the source familiar with the investigation said. The Justice Department has scheduled a news conference at noon EDT.
The FBI has been tracking people they suspected might be recruiting for or financing the operation for months. Fourteen people already have been either arrested or indicted in the case. Thursday's announcement is expected to double that number and show that al-Shabab has managed to draw young men from a number of U.S. cities, including San Diego and Columbus, Ohio.

The Virginia man who warned on a radical Islamic website that the creators of the cartoon series "South Park" will be targeted for death for their caricature of the Prophet Muhammad has been arrested on charges that he provided material support to the terrorist organization Al-Shabab, federal officials said Wednesday.
Zachary Adam Chesser, aka Abu Talhah Al-Amrikee, admitted to federal agents that he attempted on two occasions to travel to Somalia to join Al-Shabab as a foreign fighter. After he was stopped from boarding a flight from New York to Uganda on July 10, Chesser, 20, allegedly admitted that he intended to travel from Uganda to Somalia.
"This case exposes the disturbing reality that extreme radicalization can happen anywhere, including Northern Virginia," said U.S. Attorney Neil MacBride. "This young man is accused of seeking to join Al-Shabab, a brutal terrorist organization with ties to Al Qaeda. These allegations underscore the need for continued vigilance against homegrown terror threats."

(Reuters) - Twin bomb attacks in Uganda that killed 73 people last week were carried out by suicide bombers and Pakistanis were among 20 suspects arrested, the head of police said on Sunday.
Somali al Shabaab insurgents linked to al Qaeda have said they carried out the attacks on a restaurant and a rugby club in the capital Kampala while fans watched the World Cup final last Sunday, but said no suicide bombers were involved.
"These attacks were carried out by suicide bombers. The evidence is overwhelming ... two heads have not been claimed, neither have they been identified. It can't be a coincidence," Inspector General of Police Kale Kayihura told a news conference.
Al Shabaab said it was avenging the killing of civilians by African Union peacekeepers. Ugandan forces form the backbone of the 6,100-strong contingent in Somalia...
Last week police said they had arrested six of the more than 20 Somalis and Ugandans suspected of planning the bombings.
Kayihura said on Sunday the number of arrests had risen.
"We have arrested more than 20 people arrested, some of whom are foreigners, including Pakistanis," he said, without elaborating.
