(Reuters) - Deadly clashes between south Sudan's army and a renegade commander have killed 105 fighters and civilians, the army said on Friday, as the war-scarred region moves toward independence.
The violence comes days after results of a referendum on secession confirmed south Sudan would declare independence in July, after decades of civil war which claimed 2 million lives.
The region's army said clashes at Fangak in Jonglei state on February 9 and 10 had killed 50 fighters from both sides and 39 civilians, adding to the 16 casualties it reported a day earlier from fighting in Door.
"It was George Athor's men who came with machine guns, AK 47s and started firing," said south Sudan's army spokesman Philip Aguer.

Since the dawn of modern warfare, the best way to stay alive in the face of incoming fire has been to take cover behind a wall. But thanks to a game-changing "revolutionary" rifle, the U.S. Army has made that tactic dead on arrival. Now the enemy can run, but he can't hide.
After years of development, the U.S. Army has unleashed a new weapon in Afghanistan -- the XM25 Counter Defilade Target Engagement System, a high-tech rifle that can be programmed so that its 25-mm. ammunition does not necessarily explode on impact. Instead, it can be set to detonate either in front of or behind a target, meaning it literally will go through a wall before it explodes and kills the enemy.
It also has a range of roughly 2,300 feet -- nearly the length of eight football fields -- making it possible to fire at targets well past the range of the rifles and carbines that most soldiers carry today.

FORT BLISS, Texas -- A person opened fire Monday at a convenience store on Fort Bliss, injuring two people before being killed by responding officers, the commander of the West Texas Army post said.
Col. Joseph A. Simonelli Jr. declined to discuss the conditions of the victims or other details of the shooting. Simonelli said the area was roped off for an FBI investigation, but the sprawling facility next to El Paso never was under lockdown.

Pakistan army accused of extrajudicial killings in Swat
"The Pakistani military has yet to understand that a bullet in the back of the head is simply not the way to win hearts and minds in Swat," says Ali Dayan Hasan, Pakistan representative for Human Rights Watch (HRW), in the report.

It documents cases where members of the army allegedly took away Taliban suspects, who were later found dead, their bodies riddled with bullets.

The army said it had driven insurgents from Swat following a massive offensive against them last year.

Army spy plane picked up Faisal Shahzad's phone calls
It seems like an Army spy plane that was circling above New York City was able to eaves drop on Faisal Shahzad's phone calls. They intercepted his call to Emeriates Airlines and quickly dispatched the FBI to JFK airport to apprehend him. Wired
Investigators were able to track wannabe terrorist Faisal Shahzad through his anonymous, pre-paid cell phone — exactly how, they won’t say. But there was a tantalizing explanation posted — and then quickly yanked — from the website of WCBS TV. “In the end, it was secret Army intelligence planes that did him in. Armed with his cell phone number, they circled the skies over the New York area, intercepting a call to Emirates Airlines reservations, before scrambling to catch him at John F. Kennedy International Airport.”
Jeremy Scahill, relying on a source in U.S. Special Operations, says those planes were likely RC-12s, equipped with a Guardrail Signals Intelligence (SIGINT) system. The planes are designed to pluck all kinds of communications from the air. But from the ground, they could easily be mistaken for an executive aircraft. The RC-12 is based on the Hawker-Beechcraft King Air B200 suit-carrier. And while earlier versions of the aircraft were covered in odd-looking antennas, the latest aircraft are far less conspicuous.[...]

His attorney says his widdle civil rights are being viowated - he's not able to pray from the Koran with his brother. Or so he claims.

The lead defense lawyer for accused Fort Hood shooter Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan said Monday that he believes the Army is violating Hasan's religious rights because it prohibited him from praying from the Koran in Arabic with a relative.
Attorney John P. Galligan said he learned that police guarding Hasan at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio cut short a phone conversation Hasan was having with one of his brothers on Friday because Hasan was not speaking in English.
“Police at the hospital refused to let him pray, in Arabic, from the Quran with his brother,” Galligan said. “I think it's illegal and a violation of his religious rights.”
Hasan practices Islam, a religion whose followers hold that Jumu'ah (Friday) prayers are one of its most strongly affirmed duties. (Ed. Note: No kidding. Thanks for clearing that up, SF Chronicle)

Are the Taliban releasing a tape of MIA soldier Bowe Bergdahl?
That's the rumor and according to the Taliban spokesperson, the video is entitled "One Of Their People Testified". Just based on the title - I don't think it's going to be good. Who knows what the Taliban put him through before his 'so-called' testimony? As always, our thoughts and prayers continue to be with Pfc. Bergdahl and his family. (And I'd also like to give a big shout out to Bikers for Blood, they recently held a blood drive event where people could write letters of support to the Bergdahl family.)

SITE Intelligence Group, a U.S.-based terrorist tracking organization, said the media arm of the Afghan Taliban made the announcement Wednesday on their Web site.
The video is said to be titled, "One of Their People Testified." The Taliban did not name the American. The only U.S. soldier known to be in captivity is Pfc. Bowe Bergdahl of Hailey, Idaho, who disappeared more than five months ago in Afghanistan.
Bergdahl, 23, was captured June 30 in the eastern province of Paktika province near the Pakistan border. His Taliban captors released a propaganda video of him about two weeks later. In the July 19 video, Bergdahl appeared downcast and frightened. No subsequent videos have been released.

Army asks: Is Ft. Hood Jihadi insane?
This just in: Additional charges for Ft. Hood jihadi.
The Army has charged the suspect in the Fort Hood shooting spree with 32 counts of attempted premeditated murder.
The charges are in addition to the 13 premeditated murder charges filed against Maj. Nidal (Nee-DAHL) Hasan (Huh-SAHN') [Ed. Note: don't you just love the Washington Post with their little Muslim pronunciation keys?) in the Nov. 5 massacre at Fort Hood.

The Army wants a formal inquiry into the sanity of accused Fort Hood shooter Nidal Malik Hasan, Hasan's lawyer John Galligan told ABC News, and the request could be approved as early as Wednesday afternoon. [...] he received notice via e-mail at 7:45 p.m Tuesday that the Army would ask to convene a "sanity board" to evaluate Hasan's mental state.
According to Galligan, the e-mail said, "Given the magnitude and seriousness of the crimes alleged in the specifications, such alleged conduct makes me believe the accused lacks mental responsibility and capacity."
Okay, Hasan's lawyer is clearly playing all the angles, but doesn't it also sound like the Army is giving Hasan the bum's rush? To my way of thinking, the Sanity Board removes minimizes the Muslim angle and gives Hasan an easy out. It also takes some of the heat off Hasan's superiors. I don't know maybe I'm just getting cynical in my old age.
Galligan said he would like to "put the brakes on" until "we can be in receipt of all the evidence that a sanity board should properly consider before making its ultimate findings on this important issue."
"I'm concerned that the prosecution, by doing this at this juncture, is just trying to rush the procedure," said Galligan. "Normally these requests come from the defense, and I have never had one where the defendant is still in the ICU."
Galligan said he is also concerned about the composition of the "Sanity Board," since it would be likely to include Army psychiatrists. Major Hasan is himself a psychiatrist, and his alleged actions have raised questions about his training and about whether warning signs were missed by the Army's medical personnel.
Stay tuned. According to Mr. Galligan a determination on the Sanity Board could be made as early as this afternoon.

Ft. Hood Jihadi: Pentagon picks Affirmative Action toadies to head investigation

With former Army Secretary Togo West and former Navy Chief of Operations Admiral Vernon Clark at the helm of this investigation, no one should expect any critical comment about the policies that allowed the career of an extremist Muslim to flourish in the US military.

Togo West never saw an affirmative action policy or minority preference policy he didn’t like. For decades the US military has been subject to yearly political indoctrination in the form of special training to prevent the “harassment” of minorities. Mostly, this means that soldiers are subjected to training teams that present courses describing how deeply racist US white people. Any joke, look, friendly comment, or official action made by a white person to a protected minority group member can and should be treated as a racist action that merits official complaint.

British soldiers told to bride taliban not to fight
Throwing money at religious fanatics won't solve any problems. If the British army or any Western army truly understands what kind of ideology they're fighting then they'll realize that they can't pay off the taliban with money or promise of a government position.
The only way, in my opinion, to win the counter insurgency is to kill as many taliban/al Qaida terrorists as possible. But in order to do that we'd need to kick the lawyers and politicians out of the military and give our soldiers a chance to do what they were trained for.

Breaking: Shooting in Ft. Hood Texas; 7 9 12 dead and 20 30 31 wounded
There has been a shooting in Ft. Hood Texas. Reports say 2 - 3 gunmen have shot and killed 7 9 people and wounded 20 30 others. Apparently 1 gunmen has been caught and the 2 others are on the loose.
There are other reports saying that military police and the gunmen were exchanging gunfire.
Military police have apparently shot a male wearing an army uniform with a rank of Major.
Update Early reports are indicating that the shooters are from the military

Lunchtime Tank Parade ! Right at lunch today these Guys and 13 others rolled down the road that divides the Jobsite I'm on , Firing ranges are typically Very Fun places to be , But when you are working on a Tank range in between Tank ranges , hearing them fire off round after round from big and small arms ( 50 cal. )about a Mile on either side , is just f'ing Awesome !

Least we forget
I have to admit, when I read this I had something in my eye by the end of it.

Last week I was in West London attending a conference.
While I was in the airport, returning home, I heard several people behind me beginning to clap and cheer.
I immediately turned around and witnessed one of the greatest acts of patriotism I have ever seen.
Moving through the terminal was a group of soldiers in their uniforms, as they began heading to their gate everyone (well almost everyone) was abruptly to their feet with their hands waving and cheering.
When I saw the soldiers, probably 30-40 of them, being applauded and cheered for, it hit me. I'm not alone. I'm not the only red blooded Briton who still loves this country and supports our troops and their families. Of course I immediately stopped and began clapping for these young unsung heroes who are putting their lives on the line everyday for us so we can go to school, work, and enjoy our home without fear or reprisal.
Just when I thought I could not be more proud of my country or of our service men and women a young girl, not more than 6 or 7 years old, ran up to one of the male soldiers.
He knelt down and said 'hi,' the little girl then asked him if he would give something to her daddy for her.
The young soldier didn't look any older than maybe 22 himself, said he would try and what did she want to give to her daddy.
Suddenly the little girl grabbed the neck of this soldier, gave him the biggest hug she could muster and then kissed him on the cheek.
The mother of the little girl, who said her daughters name was Courtney, told the young soldier that her husband was a Corporal and had been in Afghanistan for 5 months now.
As the mum was explaining how much her daughter, Courtney, missed her father, the young soldier began to tear up.
When this temporarily single mum was done explaining her situation, all of the soldiers huddled together for a brief second.
Then one of the other servicemen pulled out a military looking walkie-talkie.
They started playing with the device and talking back and forth on it.
After about 10-15 seconds of this, the young soldier walked back over to Courtney, bent down and said this to her, 'I spoke to your daddy and he told me to give this to you.'
He then hugged this little girl that he had just met and gave her a Kiss on the cheek.
He finished by saying 'Your daddy told me to tell you that he loves you more than anything and he is coming home very soon.'
The mum at this point was crying almost uncontrollably and as the young soldier stood to his feet he saluted Courtney and her mum.
I was standing no more than 6 feet away as this entire event unfolded.
As the soldiers began to leave, heading towards their gate, people resumed their applause.
As I stood there applauding and looked around, there were very few dry eyes, including my own.
That young soldier in one last act of moment turned around and blew a kiss to Courtney with a tear rolling down his cheek.
We need to remember everyday all of our soldiers and their families and thank God for them and their sacrifices.
At the end of the day, it's good to be an Englishman.
RED FRIDAYS
Very soon, you will see a great many people wearing Red every Friday.
The reason?
Englishmen and women who support our troops used to be called the 'silent majority'.
We are no longer silent, and are voicing our love for Country and home in record breaking numbers.
We are not organized, boisterous or over-bearing.
We get no liberal media coverage on TV, to reflect our message or our opinions.
Many English people, like you, me and all our friends, simply want to recognize that the vast majority of Britain supports our troops.
Our idea of showing solidarity and support for our troops with dignity and respect starts this Friday and continues each and every Friday until the troops all come home, sending a deafening message that every Briton who supports our men and women afar will wear something red.
By word of mouth, press, TV -- let's make Great Britain on every Friday a sea of red much like a homecoming football team
If every one of us who loves this country will share this with acquaintances, co-workers, friends, and family, It will not be long before Britain is covered in RED and it will let our troops know the once 'silent' majority is on their side more than ever, certainly more than the media lets on.
The first thing a soldier says when asked 'What can we do to make things better for you?' is...'We need your support and your prayers'...
Let's get the word out and lead with class and dignity, by example; and wear something red every Friday.

Incredibly the sniper's bullet had missed his head by just 2mm and after just an hour recovering from his amazing escape he was back manning his machine gun - in a borrowed helmet.
The astonishing incident happened as the soldier his comrades were on an operation with the Afghan National Army in Helmand province on April 10.
They came under fire from the Taliban and Pte Wilson set up his machine gun on the roof of a compound to engage the enemy.

$100 Excess Baggage Fee Generous to Soldiers Says American Airlines

If the airline you're flying charges a $100 "excess baggage" fee, but waives the $15 first checked bag fee, and the $25 second checked bag fee... is that "generous?"
American's policy allows military personnel "one checked 100-pound duffel-type bag, one standard checked 50-pound suitcase and one standard carry-on suitcase of up to 40 pounds." They're getting "a total of 190 pounds of free luggage," said airline spokesman Tim Wagner, in an e-mail to the El Paso Times.
Staff Sgt. Ashley Serrano doesn't see it that way. He says that other airlines see his uniform and waive their baggage fees. "I have flown Southwest, Continental, and when they saw me in uniform, they didn't even ask," Serrano said. "I flew American a couple of times before, but I never had this problem."Serrano said he was confronted Friday at the El Paso International Airport with a demand for $100 for his third bag, and when he mentioned he was headed for Camp Bowie - where Texas Army National Guard soldiers train before deployment - he said they told him, without a smile, that the Army should have given him a voucher. Serrano's fellow soldier and traveling companion had three extra bags and was charged $300, he said.
