PESHAWAR: Three people, including two paramilitary soldiers, were killed in a roadside bomb blast in northwest Pakistan’s Orakzai tribal region on Saturday, officials said.
An improvised explosive device planted by militants went off in the town of Ibrahimzai during a routine patrol by paramilitary soldiers, a security official said.
“Two soldiers and one civilian were killed in the blast,” Abdul Qadir, a local administration official, told AFP.
Seven other people — one soldier and six civilians — were wounded in the explosion near the bazaar in Ibrahimzai, he said.

(Reuters) - Eleven insurgent militiamen were killed by their own bombs when they went off prematurely in Somalia's capital, the government said on Saturday.
The mostly foreign militiamen died in two separate incidents, 10 while preparing a car bomb and another as he planted a roadside bomb, the information ministry said.
Al Qaeda-linked al Shabaab and another Islamist militia have been fighting Somalia's Western-backed government since the start of 2007, launching frequent attacks on its bases in the capital.
"They are three Pakistanis, two Indians, one Afghani, one Algerian, and two Somalis, (and) a leader who was in charge of praying for suicide bombers before they were dispatched," the ministry said in a statement.
Police arrested two men who had been guarding the militant digging a hole at a Mogadishu bridge for the roadside bomb and confiscated a bag with materials for making explosives.

The U2 spy aircraft, famed for high-altitude Cold War espionage missions over the Soviet Union, is enjoying a new lease of life in Afghanistan as the best spotter of Taliban roadside bombs in the allies’ arsenal.
Four years ago, the Pentagon wanted to retire the aircraft, which took its first test flight more than half a century ago. Since being fitted with new sensors and communications equipment, however, it has become an indispensable eye-in-the-sky for NATO forces.
From its 70,000-foot cruising altitude, the U2's high-resolution camera is capable of spotting slight changes in the country’s dry mud paths where Taliban forces often bury improvised explosive device.
U.S. military officials said that in the lead-up to the recent operation to seize Marjah in central Helmand from the Taliban, a U2 — nicknamed Dragon Lady because of its long wingspan — spotted almost 150 suspected bombs dug into roads and at planned helicopter landing sites around the town.
Its success in this new role is a remarkable transformation in the fortunes of the U2. It was designed in secrecy and began flying spy missions in 1956. In April 1960, a U2 piloted by Gary Powers was shot down over the Soviet Union and, during the Cuban missile crisis in 1962, the aircraft uncovered Soviet nuclear missiles in Cuba.
Although it has been used in every major conflict involving the U.S. since the 1960s, the Pentagon believed that it had outlived its usefulness and wanted it replaced — until Congress saved it from military obsolescence.

Taliban doing what they do best...killing civilians
A vehicle with 8 civilians including a woman was hit by an IED as they were traveling to a market. All 8 civilians were killed in the crash. BBC
At last eight civilians have been killed when a roadside bomb hit their vehicle in eastern Afghanistan, officials say.
The vehicle was travelling through the Khogyani district of Nangarhar province on its way to a market when it was hit.
There has been no claim of responsibility as yet but the Taliban frequently plant explosives on main roads across the country.

Griffon helicopters begin hunting Taliban bomb planters at night
You can run but you'll only die tired. Canadian PressKANDAHAR, Afghanistan — Two CH-146 Griffon helicopters lifted off into the dim, grainy dusk above Kandahar Airfield one night last week and made straight for the mountains, in a new and completely unheralded chapter in the Afghan war.

This mission and the handful of ones before it are not something the air force eagerly broadcasts in its public relations campaign, but it is perhaps one of the most important life-saving duties the new air wing carries out.
Aircraft running lights were switched off once they cleared "the wire" allowing the grey and black camouflaged Griffons to blend in with the night sky.
Armed with night-vision goggles and a pod of darkness-piercing sensors, including high-definition cameras, the aircrews had set off on a deadly cat-and-mouse chase with the Taliban.[...]
Although officially relegated to escort new CH-47D Chinook transport helicopters, the Griffons belonging to 408 Squadron were quietly given a new, more dangerous role soon after they deployed in December.
Their orders were to hunt insurgents who lace the roadways with home-made bombs, missions that depend on the murky world of classified intelligence.

IEDs are taliban new favorite weapon of choice
In 2008, the taliban had more than doubled IED attacks on NATO forces. This is because the taliban know they will get their asses handed to them in a straight up fight with NATO forces. I guess the taliban aren't so eager to find out if there are any virgins in paradise. Canada.comKANDAHAR AIRFIELD, Afghanistan - Using bigger and better homemade bombs to kill and to maim coalition soldiers is now the signature combat strategy for Taliban militants operating in Kandahar province, according to a Canadian military bomb expert.
Insurgents are "no longer standing and fighting," Capt. Roy Ulrich, deputy commander of the counter-IED unit in Kandahar, said at a technical briefing held late Thursday.
"This (planting improvised explosive devices, or IEDs) is their chosen strategy," he said.
According to military figures, NATO soldiers based in the province - including Canada's 2,700 troops - have been the target of more than double the number of IED attacks this winter over last.
About 180 attacks were recorded between September and December 2008, compared to 75 over the same period in 2007.

Taliban using children as human shields
From ISAFKABUL, Afghanistan — Insurgents used two Afghan children as shields while they attempted to emplace IEDs in a road in Farah province Oct. 18.
U.S. Marines with 2nd Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment were conducting counter IED operations along a route in Golestan to ensure the safe passage of civilian traffic and ground convoys when they observed four insurgents attempting to emplace an IED in the road.
Initially the Marines observed four adults and two children in a truck laden with burlap sacks and shovels. The adults began digging holes. Once the burlap sacks were removed from the truck and opened, the Marines were able to see IED materiel in the sacks and that the holes being dug in the road were for IEDs.
Marine snipers shot two of the positively identified insurgents as they emplaced an IED. After the initial shots were fired, the other two insurgents grabbed the two children they had brought with them and held them in front of them to use them as shields.
The Marines waited until the children were let go and ran away before snipers shot the remaining two insurgents. The children fled in the direction of a mosque and were unharmed.
“We know that the insurgents often display a blatant disregard for civilian life. They frequently attempt to exploit our adherence to the rule of law. Unfortunately for them, our Marines are well trained in positively identifying targets before engaging them,” said Colonel Peter Petronzio, commanding officer for the Interim Special Purpose Marine Air Ground Task Force - Afghanistan.
