The NYPD has formed a new unit to track troublemakers who announce plans or brag about their crimes on Twitter, MySpace and Facebook.
Newly named Assistant Commissioner Kevin O'Connor, one of the department's online and gang gurus, has been put in charge of the new juvenile justice unit. He and his staff will mine social media, looking for info about troublesome house parties, gang showdowns and other potential mayhem, sources said.
The power of social media to empower both criminals and cops has been on full display in London this week, where riots and looting have been spreading dramatically.
The rioters have been using Twitter and BlackBerry messages to choose targets for looting or burning - and to alert one another about police positions.
The very same social media have been a source for those trying to help cops by posting photos of rioters.
O'Connor's new unit will operate under the Community Affairs Bureau; it will also handle outreach programs, with its mandate going beyond the Net.

The dark angels of anti-security, hacker collective Anonymous, have set eyes on Facebook for its alleged large-scale security violations and sell-off of private individuals' data to government agencies.
The "hacktivists" said on Tuesday they will do 750 million Facebook users a "a favor" by killing the social networking site. They have set a D-Day, November 5, which in Britain is Guy Fawkes Day. Facebook has not yet responded to the outrageous claims of the hackers whose underground war against government agencies and some of the largest corporations in the world has entered a decisive stage.
Nor has there been any independent confirmation if the message posted on behalf of Anonymous is real or fake, or if it is a collective decision or a fringe comment.
Now the amorphous hacker community has said Facebook deserves to be destroyed. "Your medium of communication you all so dearly adore will be destroyed, the hackers warned Facebook on a Youtube video message.
And to the fellow hackers it said: "If you are a willing hacktivist or a guy who just wants to protect the freedom of information then join the cause and kill facebook for the sake of your own privacy."

Facebook Founder Zuckerberg Pledges to Only Eat What He Kills
So the big facebook guy wants to kill everything he eats and everyone makes a big deal out of it.
It is a pretty cool thing to do, I know plenty of people who do it all the time;it is their way of life.
You can go hungry if you can't hunt, so you have to have some skills.
I can hunt whitetail deer and turkeys right in my back yard, there is nothing like a real fresh turkey dinner, or a nice freshly dead venison backstrap.
While it is Honorable to attempt this, he is not special, I'm sure when he hunts it will be on a nice Game Ranch where he will be guaranteed a kill.
Killing it is one thing, Is he going to gut it and clean it?
Maybe he should hook up with Ted Nugent, That would learn em.

PALO ALTO, Calif. – Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg has publicly announced his new challenge for 2011 -- only eating meat that he has slaughtered with his own bare hands, news.com.au reported Friday.
"I just killed a pig and a goat," he wrote on his private Facebook page earlier this month.
Zuckerberg sets a single new goal for himself every year.
In 2009, he wore a tie every day. Last year, he learned Chinese. Both were fairly innocuous, but his latest campaign has caused some consternation amongst his Facebook fans.
Fortune reported that Zuckerberg was introduced to the practice by Silicon Valley chef Jesse Cool in his home town of Palo Alto, California.
She directed him to some nearby farms and helped him kill a chicken, pig and goat.
"He cut the throat of the goat with a knife, which is the most kind way to do it," Cool told Fortune.
Zuckerberg started his kill-to-eat diet by boiling a live lobster.
His girlfriend Priscilla is also keen consumer and the two recently carved up a chicken together, eating the heart and liver and making stock from the soup.
According to Fortune, he posted a photo of the chicken on his Facebook page and listed all the meals he made from it.

Hundreds of Facebook users welcomed the killing of liberal Pakistani politician Salman Taseer as a strike against reformers of the country's tight blasphemy laws. The Punjab governor was shot on Tuesday by one of his guards, 26-year-old Mumtaz Qadri, who confessed to the murder because of Taseer's
vocal opposition to the law that was recently used to sentence a Christian woman to death.
Analysts say the assassination underscores how deeply religious extremism has penetrated Pakistan's conservative society, with even the Internet-literate elite resorting to Facebook to rally support for the killer.
Nearly 2,000 Facebook users joined one group on the social networking site praising Qadri, and dozens of "fans" joined other pages set up in Qadri's honour in the hours after the shooting.
All the pages had been removed by Wednesday. Facebook was not immediately reachable for comment. But other private account holders used their Facebook status updates to make comments such as: "We salute you Mumtaz Qadri," "thank God he (Taseer) is not alive (any) more" and praise for the attacker as "a soldier of Islam".
In a sign of mainstream media opposition, Pakistan's leading Urdu-language newspaper, Jang, ran a front-page story declaring: "There should be no funeral for Salman Taseer and no condemnation for his death."

JACKSONVILLE, Florida -- A north Florida mother has pleaded guilty to shaking her baby to death after the boy's crying interrupted her game on Facebook.
Alexandra V. Tobias pleaded guilty to second-degree murder on Wednesday and remains jailed.
The Florida Times-Union reports that she told investigators she was angered because the boy was crying while she was playing the game FarmVille.
The paper also reports that she told investigators she shook the boy, smoked a cigarette to compose herself and then shook him again.
She will be sentenced in December. State guidelines call for 25 to 50 years, but a prosecutor said it could be shorter than that.

They say that the internet is a war zone between Israel and its enemies including Hamas, Hezbollah and Iranian groups.
According to the Israeli intelligence analyst, Dr Ronen Bergman, Israel's concerns are twofold: first, that Israeli internet sites might be breached and sabotaged; second, that Israeli soldiers might be enticed to give away secrets.[...]
Dr Ronen Bergman says that Hamas claims that it got important information via the internet about intelligence networks and spies and also about some of the elite units in the Israeli army.
Of particular concern are social networking sites such as Facebook.

JIDF takes down pro-Hizbollah Facebook group
The JDIF had organized supporters to contact Facebook and notify it of a pro-Hizbollah group. However, Facebook did not act and the JIDF took matters into their own hands. The infiltrated the group, removed the admins, made some changes and started to remove members of the group.
