Islamists looted and burned a Protestant church in Algeria, the congregation's leader said Monday, suggesting they were inspired by a recent wave of religious intolerance in the Arab and Muslim world. [...]

The independent El Watan daily published a picture of a smoldering pile of pulpits and desks that had been brought outside for destruction. It quoted the pastor of the local Pentecostal community, Mustapha Krireche, as saying worshippers fled the temple because local police had left a gathering of anti-Christian rioters unchecked.

The congregation was worshipping in the apartment block because it had not received official government approval to operate a church.

ALGIERS (Reuters) - Algeria's foreign minister summoned the U.S. ambassador on Monday to protest at Algeria's inclusion on a list of countries whose flights bound for the United States will be subject to extra security checks, state media reported.

The North African country is fighting an al Qaeda-linked insurgency but the violence has subsided significantly in the past few years and officials say they have stringent security measures in place, especially at airports.

Algeria's inclusion on the list -- announced by Washington after a botched attempt to blow up a Christmas Day flight bound for Detroit -- was "inappropriate, unjustified and discriminatory," the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

"The Foreign Minister, Mr. Mourad Medelci, has summoned the ambassador of the United States of America in Algiers to express to him the Algerian government's strong protest over this measure," the official APS news agency said.

Algeria, a mainly Muslim energy exporter, has cooperated with the United States in the fight against violent Islamist militants.

The 14 countries on the U.S. list are Cuba, Iran, Syria, Sudan, Afghanistan, Algeria, Iraq, Lebanon, Libya, Nigeria, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Somalia and Yemen.

Cuba and Nigeria have also complained about their inclusion in the list.

BAMAKO (Reuters) - Mali launched an operation aimed at flushing out suspected al Qaeda militants in the Sahara on Saturday and states in the region are preparing for a joint crackdown, military sources said.

A group called al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) is threatening to kill a British hostage, believed to be held in the region, on May 15 unless Britain releases a Jordanian Islamist it is holding in prison.

Mali's army sent three combat units from the northern town of Kidal to pursue a convoy of armed men spotted in the region close to its borders with Algeria and Niger, said the source, who requested anonymity.

"We are awaiting what comes out of it. We do not know whether they are Salafists or another armed group ... but we think they are Salafists," said the source.

The AQIM title was adopted when rebels with Algeria's Salafist Group for Preaching and Combat (GSPC) affiliated themselves to the al Qaeda network.

Mali and others in the region such as Algeria, Niger and Mauritania are trying to deflect pressure from Europe and the United States to tackle Islamist militant violence there.

It was not immediately clear whether the Malian operation heralded a wider offensive. However, a senior military source in Niger confirmed there were preparations for a joint effort.

"This is a about attacking head-on a joint problem, namely the presence of terrorists linked to al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb in this vast area," said the source.

Three Algerian Christians Face 3 Years in Prison for Blasphemy

October 23, 2008 Algeria (International Christian Concern)-On October 21, 2008, an Algerian court held a hearing on the case of three Christians who face three years of prison and a fine of 500 euros. The Court held the hearing in Ain Turk, a town 267 miles away from Algiers, the capital of Algeria.

The three Christians are Youssef Ourahmane, Rachid Seghir and Hamid Ramdani. The public prosecutor accused them of “insulting Islam, its prophet and threatening the former professing Christian that complained against them.”

Earlier, a lower court agreed with the prosecutor and handed down a 3 year prison sentence and 500 euro fine. The defendants were not present at the time of the decision. The defendants then appealed the decision of the lower court on July 15, 2008. The appeal court postponed the hearing until October 21, 2008.

The case against the three Christians was brought by the public prosecutor with the help of Mr. Shamouma Al-Aid. Mr. Al-Aid “converted” from Islam to Christianity for a period time during which he also attended a Bible school. According to Compass Direct News, Mr. Al-Aid continued to maintain relations with radical Muslims while attending churches and the Bible school.

Later he “reconverted” to Islam and alleged that the three Christians were blaspheming Islam and its prophet Mohammed. He also alleged that the Christians were threatening him for “reconverting” to Islam.

Al Qaida Turncoat Reveals Plans for Ramadam Bombings

A member of al Qaida who turned himself to Algerian authorities revealed that al Qaida planned carry out several suicide bombings in Algeria to mark ramadam. AKI

Algiers, 9 Sept. (AKI) - To mark the month of Ramadan, leader of the Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb, Abdel Malik Droukedel, reportedly invited four or five terrorists in the west of the country to carry out suicide attacks.

A terrorist turncoat revealed the information after he escaped from an Al-Qaeda cell on Sunday and turned himself over to police in the district of Wadi Rahiy, in the province of Ghalizan.

After he surrendered, he decided to collaborate with police, revealing that Droukedel intended to carry out the attacks during Ramadan on key commercial targets in the west of the country.

According to the turncoat, Droukedel reportedly decided to change his strategy and relieve the pressure from central Algeria, recently the target of Al-Qaeda suicide attacks, to the western region to meet new objectives.

He reportedly decided to invest in these new attacks with the money from the ransom gained from the kidnap of several businessmen in Boumerdes and Tizi Ouzou, east of Algiers.

2nd Bombing in Algeria in as Many Days

PARIS — Two car bombs killed at least 11 people and wounded 31 others on Wednesday in the Algerian town of Bouira, a day after a suicide bombing killed 43 people and wounded 45 others in a neighboring region, according to the Algerian Interior Ministry.

The bombs on Wednesday were aimed at the military command in Bouira and the nearby Hotel Sophie, the town’s largest, witnesses told The Associated Press. The car bombs went off around 6 a.m. and appeared to be powerful, badly damaging the military compound and barracks in Bouira, about 60 miles southeast of Algiers.

The bomb near the hotel exploded as a passenger bus drove by, according to the Algerian press agency APS.

The Algerian government has said that the attacks are a response to a successful counterterrorist campaign. On Tuesday, Algeria’s interior minister, Yazid Zerhouni, said that “these terrorist gangs are seeking through attacks against civilians to loosen the net closing around them as the security forces drive them to the wall.”

President Nicolas Sarkozy of France condemned “the barbaric and blind violence” of the attack Tuesday in the former French colony.

ALGIERS (Reuters) - A bomb attack east of Algiers killed 43 people and wounded 38 on Tuesday, the Algerian interior ministry said, in one of the bloodiest incidents in years in the OPEC member state.

A ministry statement carried by the official APS news agency, said the attack targeted a paramilitary gendarmerie training school at Issers, 55 km (34 miles) east of the capital.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility.

The bloodshed has subsided in recent years and in 2006 the government freed more than 2,000 former Islamist guerrillas under an amnesty designed to put an end to the conflict.

But a hard core of several hundred rebels fights on as members of al Qaeda's north Africa wing, which was previously known as the Salafist Group for Preaching and Combat or GSPC.

The group's leader, Abdelmalek Droukdel, told the New York Times last month that increasing numbers of young men around the region were joining the group out of persistent poverty and anger at what he called the West's war on Islam.
