The FBI has arrested or indicted more than a dozen Somali-Americans in two cities as part of a sweeping investigation in the recruitment of young men for a terrorist group in Somalia, sources familiar with the investigation told NPR. The people arrested are thought to have recruited and raised money for a Somali militia called al-Shabab.
The arrests are just the latest turn in a long-running investigation into the disappearance of young men from a number of U.S. cities. NPR first reported on the case two years ago, after more than two dozen young Somalis from the Minneapolis area had been recruited and sent to Somalia by the group. Some of the young men who traveled to Somalia have since returned to the U.S. At least six of the Minneapolis Somalis who joined al-Shabab are thought to have been killed in the fighting there.
An indictment against Omar Hammami, a young man from Alabama who joined al-Shabab several years ago and starred in a recruitment video, will be unsealed Thursday, the source familiar with the investigation said. The Justice Department has scheduled a news conference at noon EDT.
The FBI has been tracking people they suspected might be recruiting for or financing the operation for months. Fourteen people already have been either arrested or indicted in the case. Thursday's announcement is expected to double that number and show that al-Shabab has managed to draw young men from a number of U.S. cities, including San Diego and Columbus, Ohio.

Well, they call it a reward - I call it a bounty.

A St. Cloud human rights group has offered a $1,000 reward in the hopes of finding the person responsible for posting anti-Islamic cartoons in the city this week.
Create CommUNITY, a nonprofit organization that promotes racial harmony, announced Friday that the money would be posted with the Tri-County Crime-Stoppers for information that leads to an arrest and conviction in the case.
The crude cartoons were found stapled to a pair of utility poles Tuesday. They depict the prophet Mohammed in derogatory ways, the Qur'an and a swastika. One of the posters was stapled to a pole outside the Mandeeq Shop, a discount store named in honor of the native name for Somalia.
The authorities have identified a suspect but will not release his/her identity.
Police say they've determined the person responsible for putting up anti-Islamic posters in the central Minnesota city of St. Cloud. Sgt. Mark Sayre says the suspect has not been arrested or charged yet, but police determined who he is on Friday and are continuing to investigate. The suspect's identity is not being released.

St. Cloud police are asking anyone who's found similar material or has additional information to call. The city attorney's office had said it was planning gross misdemeanor obscenity charges once a suspect was arrested, and that it may categorize the matter as a bias crime.
It's important to note that none of the news reports show actual pictures of the posters - no doubt out of fear of offending the perpetually offended Muslims.

A 24-year-old local Somali man has been indicted in U.S. District Court in Minneapolis on charges of conspiring to provide support to terrorists.
Omer Abdi Mohamed, an unemployed employment counselor and father of a 2-month-old boy, was indicted on charges of conspiracy to "kill, kidnap, maim or injure" people in foreign countries, according to an indictment filed Tuesday but made public Thursday.
Mohamed, of Minneapolis, is the sixth Somali man with local ties to be charged in connection with a two-year-old federal counterterrorism investigation aimed at finding out who recruited as many as 20 area men of Somali descent to return to their homeland and train and fight with the terrorist group, Al-Shabaab. The probe is considered to be one of the most sweeping international counterterrorism investigations since Sept. 11, 2001.

Somali President say al Shabaab recruiters still in States
The President of Somalia, while visiting Minnesota, stated that it is very likely that al Shabaab recruiters are still in the US. Minnesota Public Radio

Ahmed arrived in the Twin Cities Friday night as part of a stateside tour of communities with sizable Somali-American populations, of which Minnesota is the largest.
In an interview with Minnesota Public Radio News, Ahmed, who is an Islamic scholar, distanced himself from radical Islamists who are trying to oust his government.
Through a translator, Ahmed expressed sympathy for the young Minnesota men who returned to Somalia to fight. Six are believed dead.

Slain Somali al Qaida leader trained jihadis from Minnesota
Salah Ali Nabhan, the al Qaida leader recently killed by US commandos in Somalia, was widely believed to be involved in the 1998 US embassy bombing in Kenya was also connected to the Minnesota jihadis. According to the Minnesota jiahdis in custody, Nabhan was one of their trainers in Somalia. Nabhan was an expert in making car bombs, especially ones used for suicide attacks. NPR
Earlier this week, U.S. Special Forces killed a man U.S. intelligence said was the link between an Islamic militia in Somalia and al-Qaida in Pakistan. But he also had a connection to the U.S. that has not been reported: He was a senior instructor for new al-Shabab recruits, including a handful of young Somali-Americans from Minneapolis.[...]
Intelligence officials tell NPR that when agents flipped to a picture of one al-Qaida operative, several of the young men said they recognized him.
His name was Salah Ali Nabhan. He's the man American commandos killed in a daylight raid in southern Somalia on Monday.
The Minneapolis boys said they recognized him because he had been one of their trainers in the camps in Somalia — on loan from al-Qaida to boost the training operations of a Somali militia called al-Shabab.[...]

Second Somali pleads guilty in al Shabaab terror case
Back in February a federal grand jury had indicted Salah Osman Ahmed, 26, of Brooklyn Park, and Abdifatah Yusuf Isse, of Seattle on charges of providing support to terrorists and conspiracy to "kill, kidnap, maim or injure" people in foreign countries.
Abdifatah Isse had plead guilty in exchange for lesser charges. It seems that Salah Ahmed is following in Isse's footsteps. According to the AP article, Ahmed could face between 5 to 15 years in prison. AP

Minneapolis teeming with Somali gangs
"It was all gang activity, totally, 100 percent," said Shukri Adan, a former Somali community organizer who estimated in a 2007 report for the city that between 400 and 500 young Somalis were active in gangs. "The police don't want to say that but everybody else knows that."

Ali was one of seven Minneapolis-area Somali men killed over a 10-month period, and authorities believe all were killed by fellow Somalis. Police say it's too simple to tie all the killings to Somali gangs, which have lured hundreds of young community members to their ranks in recent years.

Gangs like the Somali Hot Boyz, the Somali Mafia and Madhibaan with Attitude have grown more active in recent years, said Jeanine Brudenell, the Minneapolis Police Department's Somali liaison officer.
The recent spate of killings started in December 2007, when two Somali men, ages 27 and 25, were found shot to death at a south Minneapolis home. No arrests have been made in that case.
They culminated last September, when a man was fatally shot outside of the Village Market Mall, a cluster of Somali-owned businesses and a popular destination for local Somalis. Investigators believe the shooter was retaliating for the death of his cousin, one of the other slain Somalis. The mall shooting was the only of the seven slayings for which anyone was convicted — 23-year-old Hassan Mohamed Abdillahi.

Court records released this week say Abdifatah Isse left for Somalia in hopes of fighting against the Ethiopian troops who invaded the country. According to the documents, only after Isse arrived in Somalia, he realized he joined a movement connected to Al-Shabaab. At the time, the U.S. had yet to declare Al-Shabaab as a terrorist group. Isse and another Minnesota man were able to flee Al-Shabaab soon after arriving.
A friend identified the other man as 26-year-old Salah Ahmed of New Brighton. The friend said Ahmed told the other Minnesota fighters that he needed to seek treatment for his allergies. Then Ahmed and Isse escaped to Kismayo, and eventually returned to the United States.

Isse then visited family members in Somalia before returning to the U.S. in May 2008, their filing said. It appeared Isse had left the camp before the State Department in March designated al-Shabaab a foreign terrorist organization, it said.

2 Minneapolis men indicted on terror charges
On Monday Salah Osman Ahmed and Abdifatah Yusuf Isse appeared in court on Monday, indicted on charges of providing support to terrorists and conspiracy to "kill, kidnap, maim or injure" people in foreign countries.
Twenty one year old Abdifatah Isse, went to Somalia around 2007 to wage jihad with al Shabaab. Isse traveled to Somalia around the same time as 20 other Somalis from the Minneapolis area. Abdifatah Isse returned to the US earlier this year after fighting for al Shabaab but was arrested at the Seattle airport.
I expect to see more indictments in the future because earlier this year the FBI raided three money-transfer businesses in the Minneapolis area. The three money-transfer were Mustaqbal Express, also known as North American Money Transfer Inc.; Quran Express; and Aaran Financial. The FBI were looking for documents, books, records, ledgers and other materials "relating to the transfer of money, currency or funds" to Somalia, Eritrea, and other African countries.

A federal grand jury had indicted Salah Osman Ahmed, 26, of Brooklyn Park, and Abdifatah Yusuf Isse, of Seattle, in February, but the indictments were kept sealed until Ahmed appeared Monday afternoon before Magistrate Judge Susan Richard Nelson.
Special agent E.K. Wilson confirmed Monday that the indictments of Isse and Ahmed are connected to a major federal investigation into the disappearance of up to 20 local men of Somali descent. It is believed that the Minnesota men may have been recruited by terrorists to return to their families' homeland to fight in the continuing civil war there. Since October, at least four have died there.[...]
The alleged time frame of Isse and Ahmed's involvement overlaps the period when several of the Twin Cities men disappeared. The first wave of young men to leave Minneapolis for Somalia began in early 2007. A second wave is believed to have left in the late summer and late fall of 2008.
According to the indictment, federal investigators allege the men "provided material support and resources, namely personnel, including themselves, knowing and intending that the material support and resources were to be used in preparation for and to carry out a conspiracy to kill, kidnap, maim or injure persons in a foreign country" from September 2007 through December 2008.

A Minneapolis man, Jamal Bana, a 20 year old who went to Somalia to wage jihad with al Shabaab was killed by government forces this past weekend. Mineapolis Somalis indicted for ties to al Qaida
At least three Somalis from the Mineapolis area have been indicted by a grand jury on terror related charges. The Somalis were recruited by al Shabaab, a terrorist organization with close ties to al Qaida.
One of the indicted is a man, 21 year old Abdifatah Ise, who went to Somalia to wage jihad with al Shabaab. Abdifatah Ise returned to the US earlier this year after fighting for al Shabaab but was arrested at the Seattle airport.Fox News

The indictments have yet to be unsealed, but an announcement is expected in the next few weeks. One law enforcement source told FOX News the grand jury already has handed up indictments against at least three people.
Among those charged is a man from Minneapolis who went to war-torn Somalia and then, about four months ago, relocated to Seattle, according to the two sources and a leader in the Minneapolis Somali community. The man was then arrested in a Seattle airport and transferred to a jail in Minneapolis, where he is currently being detained, according to the law enforcement sources.
The law enforcement sources said the man, described as in his 20s, has been charged with providing material support to a terrorist group, in this case al-Shabaab, which has been warring with the moderate Somali government since 2006.

Somalis subpoenaed to testify to federal grand jury
According to the director of the Abubakar As-Saddique Islamic Center, attended by several of the missing Somali youth, has reported that at least 20 Somalis have been subpoenaed to testify to a federal grand jury. The spokesperson for the attorney's office has neither confirmed nor denied an investigation. Post Bulletin

The mosque has directed local Somalis seeking advice to the Council on American-Islamic Relations, which refers them to an attorney to be advised of their rights.

FBI raids in Minn. aimed at Africa money transfers
The FBI raided three money-transfer businesses in the Minneapolis area yesterday. Minneapolis is home to the largest Somali community in the US. Since last year, at least 2 dozen Somali youths have gone back to Somali to wage jihad with al Qaida linked al Shabaab.
The FBI stated the raids are not connected to the missing youths but you can bet it has something to do with funding terrorism. AP

A copy of a search warrant executed at Mustaqbal Express and obtained by The Associated Press said authorities were looking for documents, books, records, ledgers and other materials "relating to the transfer of money, currency or funds" to Somalia, Eritrea, Kenya, Sudan, Ethiopia, Djibouti and the United Arab Emirates. It also sought documents on ownership and management of the business and lists of clients. It covered materials from January 2007 to the present.

FBI finds missing Somali-American men...

One law enforcement official told Fox News the FBI is "aware that there were some missing [Somali] community members on Facebook," but the official declined to discuss whether any "investigative activity has or hasn't been carried out." The official also declined to specify how many of the missing men were found to be on Facebook.[...]
Both Schnitt and the law enforcement official said legal issues and First Amendment rights limit the FBI's ability to use Facebook as an investigative tool. In order to acquire information from Facebook, authorities need to obtain a court order, a search warrant or a subpoena, which Schnitt called "a pretty low bar."[...]
When asked if any court orders or warrants had been issued in the case of the missing Minneapolis men, the official declined to comment. Schnitt similarly declined to say whether the FBI had contacted Facebook in the course of its investigation.

Senators waking up to threat of al Shabaab

Andrew Liepman, deputy director for intelligence at the counterterrorism center, tried to reassure that the missing Somalis from Minnesota do not represent a threat to the US at least not yet.
"They are going to Somalia to fight for their homeland, not to join al Qaeda's jihad against the United States, so far."
So al Shabaab has no interest to attack the US? What about al Shabaab's threat against Obama's inauguration, and their threat to establish shariah law from Alaska and Chile to South Africa, Japan, Russia to Solomon Islands and all the way to Iceland?

Grand Jury Convenes in FBI Terror Case Against Somali-Americans in Minneapolis
Over the past year al Shabaab has been gaining more attention from the FBI and media. Especially since last October, when Shirwa Ahmed from Minnesota blew himself up in Somalia. The FBI belives that approximately 20 Somali youths have left their families in Minnesota to fight with al Shabaab in Somalia. This is worrying because these youths could be used to launch a terrorist attack back in the US.
Senator Joseph Lieberman who is the chairman of the homeland security panel asked who influenced the young men to travel to Somalia and who financed their trips. If you ask me, I would say it's Sheik Abdirahman Ahmed, pictured, the imam of the largest Minnesota mosque the Abubakar As-Saddique Islamic Center.

A woman who identified herself as a 20-year-old student at the University of Minnesota said she testified before the grand jury this morning, after receiving a subpoena on Friday. A copy of the subpoena obtained by Fox News says, "You are hereby commanded to appear and testify before the Grand Jury of the United States District Court." The subpoena told her to appear at 9 a.m. local time.[...]
Hurre said he was told a case has been opened against at least one unidentified person. He said authorities are now "trying to bring the pieces together of what's going on here" in Minneapolis. Specifically, he said investigators are trying to determine who organized the missing group of men, who financed them and how were they recruited.

Terrorists indoctrinated on US soil
This is not an isolated incident either, possibly up to 500 young Somalis might have been radicalized in Minnesota and sent to fight jihad with al Shabaab.
Besides asking who is radicalizing these young men but you should also be asking where are these young men getting money to travel to Somalia. In the last US census, it appears that the Somali community is among the poorest in the nation. Travelling to Somalia from Minnesota isn't cheap, especially when you're a 15 year old kid. Mueller III, said Monday that a Somali-American man who was one of several suicide bombers in a terrorist attack last October in Somalia had apparently been indoctrinated into his extremist beliefs while living in the United States.
The man, Shirwa Ahmed, was the first known suicide bomber with American citizenship. He immigrated with his family to the Minneapolis area in the mid-1990s, Mr. Mueller said, but he returned to Somalia after he was recruited by a militant group.
“It appears that this individual was radicalized in his hometown in Minnesota,” Mr. Mueller said, speaking at a meeting of the Council on Foreign Relations. Minneapolis claims the country’s largest Somali population.

Hamas linked CAIR says Somalis are being detained unfairly
Apparently FBI agents have been questioning Somalis at malls, college campuses and the airport. A 20 year old was also questioned at the airport for 3 hours without being told the reason why. OH MY GOD, the injustice!
Seems pretty reasonable to me when you consider that at least 20 Somali youths have disappeared from the Minnesota area to join al Shabaab in fighing jihad. One Somali, with US citizenship, already blew himself up back in October 08. Four Somali US residents were arrested in Somaliland last month and depending on who you ask another 11 Somali US residents were arrested in Somaliland.
Al Shabaab, a terrorist organization designated by the US State Department, also threatened to attack President Obama's inauguration. On inauguration day, a Somali resident alien from Minnesota was arrested at the US-Canada border in Detroit trying to sneak out of the US using his brother's passport.So the FBI has a right to be a little concerned with the Somali community.

The Minnesota chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations says it has heard from 50 to 100 people stopped by federal agents since news broke about the disappearance of several young Somali men. The men's families worry they have returned to Somalia to fight.
