A looming meeting with Islamic leaders hosted by the State Department has religious scholars and advocacy groups warning that the United States may "play into" the push by some Islamic nations to create new laws to stifle religious criticism and debate.
The meeting on religious tolerance, which is scheduled for mid-December, would involve representatives of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation -- a coalition of 56 nations which more or less represents the Muslim world.
Critics describe the get-together -- the first in a series -- as a Trojan horse for the long-running OIC push for restrictions on speech. They note the track record of nations that want the dialogue, including Egypt, where recent military action against Coptic Christians raised grave concerns about intolerance against religious minorities.
Secretary of State Hillary Clinton originally announced the meeting this past July in Turkey, where she co-chaired a talk on religious tolerance with the OIC. The event was billed as a way to foster "respect and empathy and tolerance" among nations. Delegates from up to 30 countries, as well as groups like the European Union, are also invited.
A State Department official told FoxNews.com this week that the meeting is meant to combat intolerance while being "fully consistent with freedom of expression."

Britain may be under new management but it seems like operating under the rules of the previous government, banning Michael Savage and Geert Wilders for their political opinions and letting in radical muslim imams who preach death to the West. Times Online

Naik, who proselytises on Peace TV, a satellite television channel, is reported to have called for the execution of Muslims who change their faith, described Americans as “pigs” and said that “every Muslim should be a terrorist”.
In a recent lecture, he said he was “with” Osama Bin Laden over the attacks on “terrorist America”, adding that the 9/11 hijackings were an inside job by President George W Bush.

(Reuters) - The Swedish cartoonist whose sketch of the Prophet Mohammad has made him the target of Muslim anger said on Wednesday he had received more death threats since arrests were made this week over an alleged plot to kill him.
Lars Vilks, whose sketch had shown the Prophet Mohammad with the body of a dog, told Reuters the death threats had been made in Internet messages following the arrests by police in Ireland of seven people in connection with the alleged murder plot.
He said he had received a large number of threats since 2007, when his sketch was first published, but new ones were sent to him on Tuesday.
"They wanted to shoot me in the head with a shotgun," Vilks said, referring to one of the latest messages. "The other one was also about killing me."
Irish police said on Tuesday they had detained four men and three women in southern Ireland as part of an investigation into a murder conspiracy. A security source said the investigation was into a plot to murder Vilks.
In 2007, an Iraqi group linked to al Qaeda offered a $100,000 reward for Vilks' killing.
The 63-year-old, who continues to live at his home in southern Sweden and has no bodyguards, said he had no regrets about drawing the cartoons.
"If you mean to be a serious artist ... this will be the outcome sometimes -- that you will bump into borders with unseen consequences," he said.
Vilks said he had no political motive.

GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- The American Civil Liberties Union has sued a north Florida school district. The lawsuit claims the Alachua County School District violated students' rights by not allowing them to wear T-shirts with an anti-Islamic message.
The civil rights organization says it doesn't agree with the "Islam is of the Devil," message printed on T-shirts distributed by the Dove World Outreach Center and worn by area school children. But the ACLU says it supports the students' constitutional right to freedom of speech.

Jailed Egyptian blogger to go on hunger strike
Hani Nazeer an Egyptian blogger was jailed in October 2008 for speaking out against islam. Nazeer has never been charged with anything and the courts recently rejected his application for release. Now Nazeer has vowed to go on a hunger strike. Pure Content
A 28 year old blogger imprisoned in Egypt for posting material on his site that was highly critical of Islam and occasionally of the Coptic Orthodox Church’s hierarchy has decided to go on a hunger strike, so as to raise awareness of freedom of speech. Egyptian legislation allows for the justice system to strike down on those who publically insult religion or religious groups. Hani Nazeer worked as a secondary school social worker in the Egyptian town of Qena and while he himself is a Coptic Christian, the blogger has been critical of both the country’ majority religion, Islam, as well as the leadership of his own church. Nazeer was actually arrested in October 2008, after writing an online fictitious novel which was highly critical of Islam’s growing role in Egyptian civil society, and uploading this to his blog.

UK court reverses Home Office's ban on Geert Wilders
In Febuary of 2009 the UK Home Office, at the time under Jacqie Smith, banned Geert Wilders from entering the UK to screen his short film Fitna. The Home Office stated that Geert Wilders poised a threat to social harmony. Lord Ahmed, Britain's only muslim Lord, threated 10,000 angry muslims in front of parliament if Geert Wilders was allowed to screen Fitna.
Finally justice has prevailed. A UK court has overturned the Home Office's entry ban for Geert Wilders. Now Britain needs to reverse the reverse the entry ban on Michael Savage. BBC

The Obama administration has marked its first foray into the UN human rights establishment by backing calls for limits on freedom of expression. The newly-minted American policy was rolled out at the latest session of the UN Human Rights Council, which ended in Geneva on Friday. American diplomats were there for the first time as full Council members and intent on making friends.Read it all.
President Obama chose to join the Council despite the fact that the Organization of the Islamic Conference holds the balance of power and human rights abusers are among its lead actors, including China, Cuba, and Saudi Arabia. Islamic states quickly interpreted the president's penchant for "engagement" as meaning fundamental rights were now up for grabs. Diversity Czar wants "more people of color, gays" in media

Mark Lloyd, the FCC Diversity czar, has called for white media personalities to step down in favor of "people of color, gays and other people". Mr. Lloyd had described dictator Hugo Chavez's rise to power as "an incredible revolution - a democratic revolution."

Britain: Hotel owners charged for "insulting" muslim guest
A British couple, who own a hotel, have been charged with breaching public order for apparently offending a muslim woman who was staying at their hotel. Mrs Vogelenzang, 54, the owner of the hotel, commented that islamic dress for women is a form of bondage when the muslim guest showed up in an islamic veil. Apparently Mr. Vogelenzang stated that Muhammen was a warlord.
So... the muslim guest was offended by the truth. WTF is wrong with Britain? This isn't just dhimmitude on part of British officials, this is implementation of shariah law in Britain. Daily Mail
A Christian couple have been charged with a criminal offence after taking part in what they regarded as a reasonable discussion about religion with guests at their hotel.
Ben and Sharon Vogelenzang were arrested after a Muslim woman complained to police that she had been offended by their comments.[...]
The couple, whose trial has been set for December, face a fine of up to £5,000 and a criminal record if they are convicted.
Although the facts are disputed, it is thought that during the conversation the couple were challenged over their Christian beliefs.
It is understood that they suggested that Mohammed, the founder of Islam, was a warlord and that traditional Muslim dress for women was a form of bondage.
They deny, however, that their comments were threatening and argue that they had every right to defend and explain their beliefs.

Supreme court of Netherlands rules insulting islam is not equal to insulting muslims
In a victory for freedom of speech the Dutch Supreme Court ruled in favor of a man who stuck a poster in his window with the text: 'Stop the tumour that is called Islam'. The court ruled the man did not insult muslims by insulting the religion of islam.

The highest court of the Netherlands acquitted a man of insulting Muslims although he dubbed Islam a tumour.
The Supreme Court quashed a ruling by an appeal court in Den Bosch. As had a district court earlier, the appeal court did find the man guilty. Yesterday's acquittal can have consequences for all future court cases on insulting followers of a faith or ideology, including the notorious case against MP Geert Wilders.
According to the country's highest court, people expressing themselves offensively about a religion are not automatically guilty of insulting its followers, even if the followers feel insulted. "The statement must unmistakeably refer to a certain group of people who differentiate themselves from others by their religion," ruled the Supreme Court.

Defemation of Religion Document Rejected by UN
The UN document, defamation of religion, which was put forward by the Organization fo the Islamic Conference was rejected by the UN. The document specificaly mentioned only islam and many critics argued the document would suppress freedom of expression.
This was an attempt by the OIC to make it more difficult to expose the ugly truth about islam and it's violent tendencies. This may be a setback for the OIC but I expect them to come back with another attempt to suppress freedom of expression Human Rights Tribune

The concept of defamation of religion promoted by the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) and some African countries did not find favor in the Human Rights Council. It was this theme that concerned all member states this Spring and remains an issue that threatens the follow-up conference on racism (Durban II) which will be held in Geneva next April. If the Council cedes this point, warn certain Western nations ‘it is the end of the Council’s credibility’. On Thursday, Githu Muigai, the Special Rapporteur for contemporary forms of racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and intolerance, found it was not necessary to promote the sociological concept of defamation of religion but rather to adhere to juridical norms when it comes to inciting racial or religious hatred.
In his report presented yesterday, Githu Muigai repeated the conclusions of his predecessor, Doudou Diène, France’s Ambassador to the UN in Geneva. Speaking for the European Union, Jean-Baptiste Mattéi also applauded the reversal. ‘It is fundamental to make a distinction between criticizing religions and inciting religious hatred. Only the latter … should be banned.’ For France’s Ambassador, freedom of expression is an essential element for democracies. ‘One does not reduce tensions by preventing ideas about religion and belief.’

Small Victory for Free Speech
The Canadian Human Rights Commission has dismissed a complaint by a Muslim organization against Maclean’s and Mark Steyn. However, they are still facing the B.C. human rights commission. For a total victory, the human rights commisions/tribunals should be abolished. CBC

The Canadian Human Rights Commission has dismissed a complaint by a Muslim organization against Maclean’s, ruling that the views expressed in one of the magazine's articles were not “of an extreme nature.”
The Canadian Islamic Congress had alleged that the article written by Mark Steyn entitled "The Future Belongs to Islam" and posted on the magazine’s website in October 2006 discriminated and spread hatred against Muslims.
The article, an excerpt of a book authored by Steyn, talks about Islam being a threat to North American institutions and values. It used statistics to show higher birth rates plus immigration mean Muslims will outnumber followers of other religions in Western Europe."The writing is polemical, colourful and emphatic, and was obviously calculated to excite discussion and even offend certain readers, Muslim and non-Muslim alike," wrote Lucie Veillette, secretary to the commission.

"Overall, however, the views expressed in the Steyn article, when considered as a whole and in context, are not of an extreme nature as defined by the Supreme Court."
The commission said there was "no reasonable basis in the evidence to warrant the appointment of a Tribunal."
On its website, Maclean's said it was pleased the complaint was dismissed and that the decision was in keeping with its position that the article "was a worthy piece of commentary on important geopolitical issues, entirely within the bounds of normal journalistic practice."
But it added that no human rights commission should have the mandate to monitor or assess the editorial decisions of the nation's media.
