Afghanistan news center
The Taleban and other insurgent groups should be investigated and prosecuted for war crimes, Amnesty International said today, following the release of a UN report showing a rise in targeted killings of civilians in Afghanistan by anti-government fighters.

Civilian deaths in Afghanistan leapt by 31% in the first half of 2010, driven largely by the Taleban and other insurgents' rising use of improvised explosive devices, and their increased targeting of civilians for assassination, according to the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA). Attacks by the Taleban and other anti-government forces accounted for more than 76% of civilian casualties and 72% of deaths.

In the first half of 2010, the executions and assassinations of civilians by the Taleban and other insurgent groups increased by over 95% to 183 recorded deaths compared to the same time last year. The victims were usually accused of supporting the government.

"The Taleban and other insurgents are becoming far bolder in their systematic killing of civilians. Targeting of civilians is a war crime, plain and simple" said Sam Zarifi, Amnesty International's Asia-Pacific Director. "The Afghan people are crying out for justice, and have a right to accountability and compensation."

North Korea Performing Amputations Without Anesthesia in Dismal Report on Health System

"Five medical assistants held my arms and legs down to keep me from moving. I was in so much pain that I screamed and eventually fainted from pain," said the man, identified only by his family name, Hwang. "I woke up one week later in a hospital bed."

If Things keep going the way they are going , this could be America one day !

North Korea's health care system is in shambles, with doctors sometimes performing barbaric amputations without anesthesia and working by candlelight for payment in cigarettes, in hospitals lacking essential medicine, heat and power, human rights watchdog Amnesty International said Thursday.

North Korea's state health care system has been deteriorating for years amid the country's economic difficulties. Many of its 24 million people reportedly face health problems related to chronic malnutrition, such as tuberculosis and anemia, Amnesty International said in a report on the state of the health care system.

A 24-year-old defector from northeastern Hamkyong province told the human rights organization that a doctor amputated his left leg from the calf down without anesthesia after his ankle was crushed by a moving train when he fell from one of the cars.

"Five medical assistants held my arms and legs down to keep me from moving. I was in so much pain that I screamed and eventually fainted from pain," said the man, identified only by his family name, Hwang. "I woke up one week later in a hospital bed."

Hamas executes two Palestinians in Gaza

Hamas executes a couple of their own people , they say they were Spies for those evil Jews !
I just see two less trouble makers who are Palestinian !

(Reuters) - Hamas said Thursday it executed two Palestinians convicted by a Gaza military court of collaborating with Israel.

It was the first time that Hamas has carried out formal executions since the Islamist group seized control of the Gaza Strip three years ago from the rival Fatah party of President Mahmoud Abbas, who governs in the occupied West Bank.

A Hamas government official confirmed the executions after the bodies of two men arrived at a Gaza hospital but did not say how they were carried out.

The Palestinian rights group al-Mizan identified the executed men as Mohammed Ismail and Nasser Abu Freh.

London-based Amnesty International had urged Hamas not to carry out several death sentences against Palestinians convicted of murder and of collaborating with Israel.

Amnesty said proceedings in Hamas military courts do not meet international legal standards.

Under Palestinian law, execution orders can be carried out only with presidential approval. But Hamas does not recognize Abbas's presidency, and the executions represented a further challenge by the group to his authority.

Abbas has refrained from approving death sentences against Palestinians convicted of capital offences in the West Bank.

Amnesty said the last execution in Gaza took place in 2005.

Amnesty slams China for silence on execution toll

And as usual , China takes the lead .

Funny though , When they talk about all the other countries here they just say Executions but when they talk about America ...

In the Americas, the United States was the only country to carry out executions last year, but the 52 killings were about half the number recorded a decade earlier in 1999.

It is strangely changed to Killings !

I would say China , Iran , Iraq and other countries like them are actually killing people just because , Way before you could ever say this about the United States !

(Reuters) - Amnesty International criticized China on Tuesday for failing to reveal the number of people it executed last year, which the rights group estimates is more than the rest of the world combined.

Iran had the second highest number of executions in 2009, Amnesty said in a new report, adding that about a third of the country's 388 executions took place in eight weeks of turmoil following Iran's disputed presidential election in June.

"The past year saw capital punishment applied extensively to send political messages, to silence opponents or to promote political agendas," Amnesty interim secretary general Claudio Cordone said in a statement.

"Chinese authorities claim that fewer executions are taking place. If this is true, why won't they tell the world how many people the state put to death?" he said, releasing Amnesty's 2009 death sentences and executions report.

China is already under the spotlight due to a row over censorship with internet search giant Google Inc.

Eighteen countries executed a total of at least 714 people last year, and more than 2,000 people were sentenced to death in 56 countries. Amnesty said its figures were conservative and did not include a death count from China, which the rights group believes is in the thousands.

Discounting China, Iraq passed the most death sentences last year, and carried out 120 executions, putting it in third place.

Execution methods recorded included hanging, shooting, beheading, stoning, electrocution and lethal injection.

Iran and Saudi Arabia were singled out for executing juveniles, which Amnesty says violates international law.

Amnesty Warns Philippines Against Arming Civilians

The peaceniks don't like the idea of Christians in the southern Philippines of being able to protect themselves against terrorists. Amnesty International is worried this will lead to increased violence.

Where was Amnesty International when MILF, Moro Islamic Liberation Front, terrorists shot or hacked to death 37 people? Where was Amnesty International when MILF terrorists used Christian civilians as human shields and then shot them to death when fleeing from the Filippino army? International Herald Tribune

ILIGAN, Philippines: Local political leaders in the southern Philippines have started arming civilians to protect against Muslim rebel attacks, a dangerous development that could further escalate violence, Amnesty International said Friday.

Tens of thousands of civilians have been displaced and dozens killed in recent attacks blamed on Moro Islamic Liberation Front rebels, prompting the government to scrap a preliminary peace accord calling for an expanded autonomy for minority Muslims.
....
Human rights group Amnesty International said the rebels "should be held to account" for serious violations of international law, but also warned that the deployment of civilian militias on the government side "can set off a chain of reprisals and only increase the danger facing civilians."

The Philippine military has a decades-old policy of arming civilian militias to reinforce security forces and protect local communities.

Following Monday's rebel attack on five coastal towns in Lanao del Norte province in which guerrillas [editor note: read terrorists] shot or hacked to death 37 people, Amnesty said that local politicians in nearby North Cotabato province supplied guns and ammunition to the civilians after security officials reportedly refused.
