The Venezuelan authorities have issued an arrest warrant for the owner of a private television channel fiercely critical of President Hugo Chavez.
Prosecutors accuse Guillermo Zuloaga, who owns the Globovision channel, of business irregularities.
Mr Zuloaga's supporters say the warrant is an effort to silence him. The government says all due legal procedures have been followed.
Opposition groups accuse Mr Chavez of trying to control the media.

The head of the Islam Channel, Britain’s most popular Muslim television station, has been arrested in South Africa and faces deportation to Tunisia over terrorism allegations.
The Times disclosed more than a year ago that Mohamed Ali Harrath, a Scotland Yard adviser against Islamic extremism, was wanted by Interpol because of his alleged activities in his homeland. His arrest on Sunday after a flight from London is being blamed by supporters on a security clampdown by the South African authorities in the run-up to this summer’s World Cup.[...]
Before fleeing his homeland, he co-founded the Tunisian Islamic Front, which Tunis accused of seeking to establish a Muslim state by armed revolutionary violence. Harrath insists that the organisation was a non-violent political party set up to oppose what he regarded as Tunisia’s one-party rule.

Police and supporters of President Hugo Chavez clashed with students in cities across the country Monday during protests over the government forcing an opposition channel off cable TV. Two youths were reported killed and 16 people suffered injuries.
Merida Gov. Marcos Diaz says one of the victims was shot dead. The other was killed by an explosive amid clashes between police, anti-Chavez students and government supporters.[...]

Hugo Chavez closes TV channel critical of him
Hugo Chavez's government has ordered cable providers to drop Radio Caracas Television, RCTV, a TV station that is critical of Hugo Chavez. Venezuela's state-run telecommunications agency said the tv station violated new regulations requiring all TV stations to broadcast Chavez's speeches.
I guess RCTV didn't think Hugo Chavez's 4 hour marathon, coca laced, tirades is good television.

Several channels have not shown Chavez's televised speeches when he orders all media to air them - a requirement under new regulations approved last month by the telecommunications agency, Cabello said.
RCTV did not broadcast a speech by the president to his political supporters during a rally early on Saturday.

78 year old woman to sell TVs because Obama's on every channel

A 78-year-old Carroll woman says she's so tired of seeing President Barack Obama on the airwaves that she's selling her television sets - two of them.
Deloris Nissen, a retired nurses' aide and former Kmart employee who was raised on a farm near Audubon, placed a classified advertisement with The Daily Times Herald for Friday's paper.
In the $5.50 ad, Nissen tells readers she has two television sets for sale.
The reason: "Obama on every channel and station."
In an interview Nissen said she is serious about selling two TVs - and genuine about her disgust with what she believes to be an overexposed president.
"I just got tired of watching him on every channel," Nissen said. "I thought, my gosh, does he ever stay at the White House?"

Audience interest in Barack Obama’s news conferences seems to be falling, with Wednesday’s press event drawing the president’s smallest primetime audience since his inauguration.
The telecast to mark Obama’s 100th day in office was viewed by 28.8 million people, according to Nielsen. That's a 29% drop from the president's last press conference, on March 24, and a 42% fall since his first, on Feb. 9.

Fox will not air Obama's prime time press conference
Instead it will stick to its regular programming, a drama titled "You Lie to Me". HA! Couldn't think of a better show to substitute for President Obama's press conference.

When the presenter of Amoo Pourang (Uncle Pourang), a programme watched by millions of Iranian children three times a week on state TV, asked the name of the toy the boy had been given as a reward for behaving himself, the child replied: "Well, my father calls him Ahmadinejad."HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA, I'm sure that was the reason why.
The father's likely unease at his son's honesty was matched by the programme makers after the state broadcaster, IRIB, immediately responded by removing the show from viewing schedules, The Guardian reported.
The popular show has been running for a very successful seven years but is now due to screened for the final time next week, the paper added.
Jahan News, a conservative website, said the decision was sparked by "the high financial and spiritual damage" caused by live broadcasts.

Director receives death threats over documentary about gay muslims
I don't understand why some muslims are so bent out of shape because of the upcoming documentary about gay muslims. After all the most famous muslim, muhammed, was teh gheyest of 'em all.

Then the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, opened his mouth and put his tongue in his mouth. Then he said, O Allah, I love him, so love him and the one who loves him!'"
Daily StarCHANNEL 4 has come under fire from Islamic leaders over a television documentary showing how gay and lesbian Muslims suffer under their laws.
Its director has already had death threats because homosexuality is strictly forbidden by The Koran.
Now station chiefs are bracing themselves for a backlash. Its digital channel More 4 will show A Jihad For Love tonight.
It lifts the lid on the battle gay and lesbian Muslims face as they struggle with their faith and their sexuality.
The documentary not only shows gay Muslims daring to kiss, holding hands and talking about getting married, it also provides harrowing reports on the suffering they have faced under Islamic law.

Heller looking for movie version of 'Rome'
I sure hope this pans out. I'm a huge fan of the tv series which ended way too early. For those of you who haven't seen this show I suggest you go to blockbuster and rent the first and second season of Rome. Awesome show. the Live feedBruno Heller says he wants to produce a theatrical wrap-up to his critically beloved and prematurely canceled HBO drama "Rome."
"There is talk of doing a movie version," he said. "It's moving along. It's not there until it is there. I would love to round that show off."
The lavish period drama ran for two seasons on HBO, which co-produced the series with the BBC. With the final season of "The Sopranos" as its lead-in, the first season was solidly rated. But the show's hefty $100 million production cost presented the network with a tough call on the pickup. HBO opted for a second season to help get more value from its initial investment but not a third, effectively canceling the show in summer 2006 before the second season debuted the following January. The "Rome" sets were destroyed, and the actors were released from their contracts, making the network's decision all but irreversible.
But season 2 of "Rome" was a surprise. Although slightly lower rated than the first, the show did much better than HBO expected without its "Sopranos" lead-in (averaging roughly 6.5 million viewers, nearly the same as "True Blood"). Plus it won awards, which is important to a pay network that attracts subscribers by offering premium programming: Post-cancellation, the first season received four Emmy Awards, and then another seven Emmys were heaped upon the final season.
Suddenly "Rome" was a Greek tragedy: a successful show with no future. The broadcast nets quickly snatched up the show's leads for top fall pilots.

BBC Boss says islam should be treated more sensitively than Christianity
The BBC boss admitted that that the government funded tv broadcaster does treat islam in a different light relative to other religions like Christianity. He feels that because islam is practised by a minority of people in England it should be treated more sensitively than Christianity.
Simple BS. The BBC is afraid of the muslim population, plain and simple. They don't want to receive death threats for insulting islam or muhammad. By islam's standards thats pretty easy to do, even without realising it. TelegraphMark Thompson claimed that because Muslims are a religious minority in Britain and also often from ethnic minorities, their faith should be given different coverage to that of more established groups.
YAAAA OK, the BBC is scared of the muslim population in England, just like the British government. That's why there are no shows that critize islam on the BBC....
His comments come after the comedian Ben Elton accused the BBC of being scared of making jokes about Islam, while Hindus have claimed it favours Muslims over other religions.
But Mr Thompson, speaking at the annual public theology lecture of the religion think-tank Theos, insisted the state broadcaster would show programmes that criticised Islam if they were of sufficient quality.But asked whether it was correct that the BBC "let vicar gags pass but not imam gags", as Elton claimed, he admitted it did take a different approach to Islam, which has 1.6million followers in Britain, compared to its approach to the Church of England or the Roman Catholic Church.
Mr Thompson said: "My view is that there is a difference between the position of Christianity, which I believe should be central to the BBC's religion coverage and widely respected and followed.
"What Christian identity feels like it is about to the broad population is a little bit different to people for whom their religion is also associated with an ethnic identity which has not been fully integrated.
"There's no reason why any religion should be immune from discussion, but I don't want to say that all religions are the same. To be a minority I think puts a slightly different outlook on it."
