(Bloomberg) -- The U.K. ordered Iran to close its embassy in London and remove its diplomats in the aftermath of a mob attack on the British Embassy in Tehran.
Iran’s isolation deepened as France and Germany recalled their ambassadors for consultations and Italy considered closing its mission in the Iranian capital. Britain closed its embassy in Tehran and evacuated the staff following the attack.

Pakistani officials are indicating that a U.S. diplomat charged with murder in Pakistan may soon be released.
Two Pakistani officials in the United States told The Associated Press on Friday they expect Davis to be free in days, once a Pakistani court goes over documents U.S. officials have submitted to prove his diplomatic status. The Pakistani officials spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the sensitive matter. U.S. officials say Raymond Davis, who works at the consulate in Lahore, acted in self-defense in shooting and killing two armed men who approached him on the street after robbing someone else.

NASA Chief: Next Frontier Better Relations With Muslim World

NASA Administrator Charles Bolden said in a recent interview that his "foremost" mission as the head of America's space exploration agency is to improve relations with the Muslim world.
Though international diplomacy would seem well outside NASA's orbit, Bolden said in an interview with Al Jazeera that strengthening those ties was among the top tasks President Obama
assigned him. He said better interaction with the Muslim world would ultimately advance space travel.
"When I became the NASA administrator -- or before I became the NASA administrator -- he charged me with three things. One was he wanted me to help re-inspire children to want to get into science and math, he wanted me to expand our international relationships, and third, and perhaps foremost, he wanted me to find a way to reach out to the Muslim world and engage much more with dominantly Muslim nations to help them feel good about their historic contribution to science ... and math and engineering," Bolden said in the interview...
"It is a matter of trying to reach out and get the best of all worlds, if you will, and there is much to be gained by drawing in the contributions that are possible from the Muslim (nations)," he said. He held up the International Space Station as a model, praising the contributions there from the Russians and the Chinese.

Pakistan harassing US diplomats
American diplomats, CIA officers, and military attaches have been complaining that the Pakistani military and intelligence apparatus has been harassing them.

ISLAMABAD — Parts of the Pakistani military and intelligence services are mounting what U.S. officials in Islamabad describe as a campaign to harass American diplomats, fraying relations at a critical moment when the Obama administration is demanding more help to fight the Taliban and al-Qaida.[...]
The problems affected military attachés, CIA officers, development experts, junior-level diplomats and others, a senior U.S. diplomat said. As a result, some U.S. aid programs to Pakistan, which President Obama has called a critical ally, are "grinding to a halt," the diplomat said.
U.S. helicopters used by Pakistan to fight extremists can no longer be serviced because visas for 14 U.S. mechanics have not been approved, the diplomat said. Reimbursements to Pakistan of nearly $1 billion a year for its counterterrorism operations were suspended because embassy accountants had to leave the country.

An East-West clash over a Swiss referendum last week banning the construction of mosque minarets heated up today as Iran's foreign minister warned of unspecified "consequences" if the ban were enforced.
Manouchehr Mottaki spoke on the phone with his Swiss counterpart Micheline Calmy-Rey. Switzerland and Iran generally have good relations. The Swiss serve as Washington's representative in the Iranian capital in the absence of formal relations between America and the Islamic Republic, giving them exalted status in Tehran's diplomatic circles.
But Mottaki had harsh words for Switzerland, saying enforcement of the ban on new minarets was “against the prestige of a country which claims to be an advocate of democracy and human rights" and would "damage Switzerland’s image as a pioneer of respecting human rights among Muslims' public opinion," according to a report by the official Islamic Republic News Agency, or IRNA.

“Values such as tolerance, dialogue and respecting others' religions(Ed. Note: Don't make me laugh - you mean like Iran respects and tolerates religions other than Islam?) should never be put to referendum,” Mottaki told his Swiss counterpart. He expressed hope that Bern would soon “take necessary steps and find a constitutional way to prevent imposition of the ban.”
An Iranian cleric today also condemned the minaret ban. Ayatollah Hossein Nouri-Hamadani, said the move was "at odds with the protection of Muslim citizens' civil rights and will hurt the feelings of Muslims across the world," according to Iran's state television. (Ed. note: Oh noes! Muslims itty bitty feelings are hurt!)
Calmy-Rey told Mottaki her government would "use all its means to support Muslims rights," according to IRNA.

Terrorists traded for captured Canadian diplomats
In a report released this past weekend, it seems that two Canadian diplomats who were held hostage by al Qaida in Mali in 2008 were released in exchange for 4 captured terrorists and an unspecified amount of money.
While I'm glad that the two Canadian diplomats are free, exchanging hostages for captured terrorists and or money will only encourage more hostage taking. Canada.com
The freedom of two Canadian diplomats taken hostage in Africa was secured earlier this year in exchange for four terrorists as well as a cash payment, according to a report published Saturday.
The Globe and Mail reported that diplomats Robert Fowler and Luis Guay were released from captivity in Mali after four members of al-Qaida were set free.
The newspaper report cited high-ranking government sources in Mali and said that one of the four released terrorists was a bomb-maker.[...]
After his release, Fowler stirred up an political storm by suggesting a UN employee or the Niger government betrayed him and ``shopped'' him to his kidnappers.
Fowler also told CBC at the time that his captors "got something" in exchange for his release.
"I didn't get out because I was a nice guy. They are not in the business of humanitarian gestures," he said. "But beyond that, who did what, how, where and for whom, I don't know."

Pakistan wants to muzzle US diplomat for speaking out against terrorists hiding in Pakistan
"Public statements on sensitive issues like countering terrorism, would be tantamount to embarrassing the government," Feierstein was told.

slamabad, Oct. 9 : Perturbed by the recent remarks of US Deputy Chief of Mission Gerald Feierstein, that top Al-Qaeda and Taliban leaders, including the one-eyed Taliban chief Mullah Omar are presently hiding in Quetta, Pakistan has asked the US diplomat to avoid discussing intelligence issues in media.
Sources said Feierstein was summoned by the Foreign Office and was told not to discuss important issues in public.
Chief of Protocol, Ghalib Iqbal, who met Feierstein at the Foreign Office, reportedly told the US diplomat that if there was information regarding the presence of Taliban leaders on Pakistani soil, then it should be shared with the government rather than being discussed in the media.

Clinton mangles state visit to Europe

A veteran politician, Clinton compared the complex European political environment to that of the two-party U.S. system, before adding:
"I have never understood multiparty democracy.
"It is hard enough with two parties to come to any resolution, and I say this very respectfully, because I feel the same way about our own democracy, which has been around a lot longer than European democracy."

Canadian diplomats missing, feared kidnapped in Niger
No group has claimed responsibility yet. Nigeria has its own share of problems with islamists. National PostOTTAWA -- Veteran Canadian diplomats Robert Fowler and Louis Guay and their local driver were reported missing Monday in the West African country of Niger after their empty vehicle was found with the engine running, lights on and telephones left behind.
Officials at the United Nations, for whom Mr. Fowler is serving as special envoy to Niger, and the Department of Foreign Affairs said Monday that the men went missing on the weekend. Their car was found about 45 kilometres northeast of Niamey, the capital of one of the world's poorest countries.
Their families have been notified and are receiving consular assistance and Canadian officials are working with UN and local authorities on the situation, Foreign Affairs Minister Lawrence Cannon said in a statement.

Iran diplomat kidnapped, insecurity mounts in Pakistan
Pakistan is quickly losing one of its largest cities to the taliban. ReutersPESHAWAR, Pakistan (Reuters) - Gunmen abducted an Iranian diplomat in Peshawar on Thursday, a day after a U.S. aid worker was shot dead in the city on the front line of an Islamist insurgency sweeping northwest Pakistan and parts of Afghanistan.
Suspicion for the kidnapping will inevitably fall on the Taliban and affiliated Sunni Muslim militant groups such as al Qaeda, who hate Shi'ite Muslims and predominantly Shi'ite Iran almost as much as they hate the West.[...]
The Iranian Foreign Ministry confirmed that its Peshawar consulate's commercial attache Heshmatollah Attarzadeh Niyaki had been kidnapped. A policeman assigned to guard him was shot and killed trying to resist the assailants, police said.

British Diplomats' Children to Leave Pakistan
Children of British diplomatic staff in Pakistan will be required to return to Britain because of the deteriorating situation in Pakistan. The British Foreign Ministry is also offering the spouses of diplomatic staff the opportunity return to Britain.
Obvisously the British have full confidence in Pakistan's willingness and ability to combat the taliban/al Qaida. AKI

London and Islamabad, 1 Oct. (AKI) - Diplomatic staff in the Pakistani capital, Islamabad, will be required to send their children back to the United Kingdom, the British Foreign Ministry announced on Wednesday.
Some 60 children are to leave Pakistan in the next few days.
The Foreign Ministry said the decision followed a review of security for British diplomatic staff in Islamabad after the deadly bombing there last month of the five-star Marriott Hotel.The British Foreign Ministry said it was offering the spouses of diplomatic staff in Islamabad the opportunity to return to the UK if they wished.
"A number of other diplomatic missions in Islamabad have recently taken similar steps," the Foreign Ministry stated, adding that London's move was not a reaction to any specific threat.
