(Reuters) - Deadly clashes between south Sudan's army and a renegade commander have killed 105 fighters and civilians, the army said on Friday, as the war-scarred region moves toward independence.
The violence comes days after results of a referendum on secession confirmed south Sudan would declare independence in July, after decades of civil war which claimed 2 million lives.
The region's army said clashes at Fangak in Jonglei state on February 9 and 10 had killed 50 fighters from both sides and 39 civilians, adding to the 16 casualties it reported a day earlier from fighting in Door.
"It was George Athor's men who came with machine guns, AK 47s and started firing," said south Sudan's army spokesman Philip Aguer.

(Reuters) - A South Sudan minister was shot dead inside his ministry on Wednesday, days after referendum results confirmed the region will become Africa's newest independent state, the southern army spokesman said.
"The minister for rural development and cooperation has been killed by a driver working at the ministry. He also killed a guard at the door of the ministry then shot himself," South Sudan's army spokesman Philip Aguer said.
Final results of a referendum on independence confirmed on Monday that South Sudan will become the world's newest nation on July 9.
Three officials confirmed the dead minister was Jimmy Lemi. No motive was immediately clear for the attack, which underlines insecurity in the South Sudan capital Juba ahead of independence.

UNITED NATIONS - The U.N. Security Council voted unanimously Wednesday to reinforce the U.N. mission in Ivory Coast with 2,000 additional peacekeepers, escalating an international campaign to pressure the country's longtime ruler to step down from power.
The council's action came as another round of African Union mediation failed to dislodge Prime Minister Laurent Gbagbo, who was defeated Nov. 28 in a U.N.-certified runoff election by opposition leader Alassane Ouattara.
U.N. officials warned that the ethnically divided West African country - which emerged only seven years ago from a bloody civil conflict between Gbagbo's army and rebel forces - could return to war.

(Reuters) - Political unrest following Ivory Coast's disputed presidential election has brought the West African country to the "brink of genocide," its new ambassador to the United Nations said.
World leaders have stepped up pressure on Laurent Gbagbo to quit in favor of Alassane Ouattara, widely recognized as having won the vote.
Youssoufou Bamba, appointed as ambassador to the United Nations by Ouattara, described him as the rightful ruler of Ivory Coast.
"He has been elected in a free, fair, transparent, democratic election. The result has been proclaimed by the independent electoral commission, certified by the U.N.," Bamba told a news conference on Wednesday.
"To me the debate is over, now you are talking about how and when Mr. Gbagbo will leave office," Bamba said.
He said there had been a "massive violation of human rights," with more than 170 people killed during street demonstrations in Ivory Coast.
"Thus, one of the messages I try to get across during the conversations I have conducted so far, is to tell we are on the brink of genocide. Something should be done," Bamba told journalists.

At least 14,000 people have fled the violence and political chaos in Ivory Coast, some walking for up to four days with little food to reach neighbouring Liberia, the UN refugee agency said. At least one child drowned while trying to cross a river.
The UN has said at least 173 people have died in violence over the disputed presidential run-off election held nearly a month ago. The toll is believed to be much higher, though, as the UN mission has been blocked from investigating other reports including an allegation of a mass grave.
"Food supplies are running short despite efforts by the government and humanitarian agencies to bring in more assistance," the UN refugee agency said in a statement. "Our staff report that host community houses are full and congested. In the area of Butuo, for example, there are homes where seven to 20 family members share a single room, while others sleep in corridors or on verandas."
West African leaders have threatened a military intervention if the man who the UN says lost the election in Ivory Coast does not step down. James Gbeho, president of the regional bloc Ecowas, said the group was making an "ultimate gesture" to Laurent Gbagbo to urge him to make a peaceful exit.
Mr Gbagbo has shown few signs that he plans to go, and his security forces have been accused of being behind hundreds of arrests, and dozens of cases of disappearance and torture in recent weeks. A Gbagbo adviser has said he does not believe their supporters are behind the attacks.

An ally of Ivory Coast's incumbent President Laurent Gbagbo has warned UN peacekeepers they could be treated as rebels if they remain in the country after being told to leave.
Mr Gbagbo accuses the UN of siding with his rival Alassane Ouattara and ordered them out of the country.
The UN says Mr Ouattara won last month's poll and has urged all parties to recognise him as president.
It has extended the mandate of its 10,000-strong force by six months.

ABIDJAN, Ivory Coast (AP) — Hundreds of residents have fled Ivory Coast, United Nations officials said Tuesday, as the U.N. also began evacuating some 500 staffers after a contentious election that resulted in both candidates claiming the presidency.
U.N. Development Program country director Andre Carvalho said hundreds of people have fled to neighboring countries, and that officials feared more would leave if violence broke out.
"While there has not been any major violence, people have started fleeing into Ghana and Liberia," he said.

A human rights group says at least 321 civilians were killed by the Lord's Resistance Army in Congo in a previously unreported massacre in late 2009.
New York-based Human Rights Watch adds that at least 250 people were abducted by the rebels, including at least 80 children during the killing spree in the Makombo area of northeastern Congo.
Senior Africa researcher Anneke Van Woudenberg calls the massacre "one of the worst ever committed by the LRA in its bloody 23-year history."
Yet the massacre targeting at least 10 villages, which occurred from Dec. 14-17, 2009, went unreported for months.
The LRA is a Ugandan rebel movement that was pushed out of Uganda and is now in a tropical forest straddling the border between Congo and the Central African Republic.

MIAMI — Devotees of a Miami man who claims to practice a traditional African religion say they were sickened when they drank the mucus of a giant African snail.
Federal authorities in January raided Charles L. Stewart's home after receiving complaints. Stewart has not been criminally charged, but prosecutors and state and federal wildlife agencies are investigating. The giant African snail is prohibited in the U.S. without special approval.
Experts say it devastates new ecosystems. The snail grows up to 10 inches long, can reproduce on its own and can eat even plaster.
Stewart tells The Miami Herald he means no harm, and his religion uses the snails in healing ceremonies.
Followers said they got violently ill, losing weight and developing strange lumps in their stomachs.

TIMBUKTU, Mali (Reuters) - In early 2008, an official at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security sent a report to his superiors detailing what he called "the most significant development in the criminal exploitation of aircraft since 9/11."
The document warned that a growing fleet of rogue jet aircraft was regularly crisscrossing the Atlantic Ocean. On one end of the air route, it said, are cocaine-producing areas in the Andes controlled by the leftist Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia. On the other are some of West Africa's most unstable countries.
The report, a copy of which was obtained by Reuters, was ignored, and the problem has since escalated into what security officials in several countries describe as a global security threat.
The clandestine fleet has grown to include twin-engine turboprops, executive jets and retired Boeing 727s that are flying multi-ton loads of cocaine and possibly weapons to an area in Africa where factions of al Qaeda are believed to be facilitating the smuggling of drugs to Europe, the officials say.
Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) has been held responsible for car and suicide bombings in Algeria and Mauritania. Gunmen and bandits linked to the group have also stepped up kidnappings of Europeans, who are then passed on to AQIM factions seeking ransom payments.
The aircraft hopscotch across South American countries, picking up tons of cocaine and jet fuel, officials say. They then soar across the Atlantic to West Africa and the Sahel, where the drugs are funneled across the Sahara Desert and into Europe.
An examination of documents and interviews with officials in the United States and three West African nations suggest that at least 10 aircraft have been discovered using this air route since 2006. Officials warn that many of these aircraft were detected purely by chance. They warn that the real number involved in the networks is likely considerably higher.

Pemba, with about 300,000 people, is part of Tanzania, while the Union of the Comoros is a nation unto itself of about 800,000.
Leaving Islam for Christianity accounts for most of the harm done to Christians, and this year saw an increase in such abuse as already-strained relations between the two communities deteriorated after the conversion in August of Sheikh Hijah Mohammed, leader of a key mosque in Chake-Chake, capital of Pemba.

Austrian hikers freed by Al-Qaeda
Thank God they're in good health and free. AFPVIENNA (AFP) — The two Austrians freed by the north African branch of Al-Qaeda are "in good health" despite being fed only bread and water during their many months in captivity, the government and a family member said Sunday.
"Wolfgang Ebner and Andrea Kloiber are in surprisingly good health," said the defence ministry in a statement.[...]
The Malian and Austrian governments have refused to comment on the circumstances of the kidnapping and the release. While Vienna denies any ransom was paid, sources close to the negotiations say money did change hands to secure a release.

Israeli Businessman kidnapped in Ghana
Could be the work of Hizbollah. A couple of months ago, the Israeli secret services thrawted a couple of kidnapping attempts in western Africa. A travel advisory warned Israeli citizens not to travel to western Africa.
It is believed that Hizbollah has cells operating in western Africa. Reuters ACCRA, Oct 24 (Reuters) - An Israeli businessman has been kidnapped in Ghana and his abductors are demanding $300,000 for his release, a senior security officer in the West African country said on Friday.
National Security Coordinator Sam Amoo told the state-run Ghana News Agency that the Israeli executive, whom he did not identify, was seized on Sunday.
The kidnappers contacted his relatives in Israel, asking for an initial ransom of $500,000, but later reduced their demand to $300,000, Amoo added.
The relatives informed Israel's embassy in Nigeria, which in turn contacted Ghanaian authorities, who were hunting for the missing executive. No more details were immediately available about the kidnapping or the identity of the abductors.

Israeli security forces have recently foiled 2 kidnapping attempts by Hizbollah. The thwarted kidnappings were aimed at Jewish businessmen working outside of Israel. The article speculates the kidnappings were to take place in western Africa. However, it could just have easily been in Venezuela.

Two attempts by Hizbullah to kidnap Israeli businessmen abroad in retaliation for the February assassination of Imad Mughniyeh were recently foiled by Israeli security services, government officials revealed on Monday.
Officials refused to divulge additional information but said that the two cases underlined the gravity of the threat Israelis are currently facing overseas. The plots, officials said, were thwarted at advanced stages.While the travel advisory did not focus on a specific country, an earlier advisory had been issued for the West Africa region. Israeli security officials have traveled to various countries in Africa in recent months to personally meet with businessmen and other Israelis living there to warn them of the growing threat.
