CAIR thanks Iran for donations

An investigative team found that CAIR received an unspecified amount of fund from the "Interests Section of Iran". Since Iran has no official representation in the US, it uses the "Interests Section of Iran" as their defacto representation.

<---A screen shot of CAIR's 14th Annual Banquet’s printed program shows that they thanked "Interest Section of Iran" for donations.

From Big Government

the “Interests Section of Iran” is listed in the printed program for CAIR’s 2008 14th Annual Banquet, on the “Thanks To:” section on page 20. That’s the page read aloud in our undercover video when Ahmed Bedier, the past director of CAIR-Tampa (Florida) and Master of Ceremonies for CAIR’s 14th Annual Banquet, personally thanks everyone listed on the page – including the “Interests Section of Iran.” You can watch it here, along with some background on CAIR and the controversies surrounding CAIR.

OSLO, Norway — A Somali-born Norwegian citizen accused of funding a Somali militant group has become the first person to be charged under the Nordic country's 2002 terror financing law.

Federal prosecutors said Wednesday they have brought charges against the 40-year-old man, whom they accuse of raising 200,000 kroner ($36,000) for the Somalia-based militant group al-Shabaab between 2007 and 2008.[...]

The man, who was allowed to remain free ahead of his trial, faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted.
I seriously hope they're keeping tabs on him.

$2.6 billion for US troops diverted to pet projects

This is treasonous. What more can I say? Washington Times

Senators diverted $2.6 billion in funds in a defense spending bill to pet projects largely at the expense of accounts that pay for fuel, ammunition and training for U.S. troops, including those fighting wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, according to an analysis.

Among the 778 such projects, known as earmarks, packed into the bill: $25 million for a new World War II museum at the University of New Orleans and $20 million to launch an educational institute named after the late Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, Massachusetts Democrat.

While earmarks are hardly new in Washington, "in 30 years on Capitol Hill, I never saw Congress mangle the defense budget as badly as this year," said Winslow Wheeler, a former Senate staffer who worked on defense funding and oversight for both Republicans and Democrats. He is now a senior fellow at the Center for Defense Information, an independent research organization.

U.S. rethinks plans to give Libya $2.5 million in aid

"The decision to appropriate the money was made some time ago but, in light of recent events, we will be taking another look at these decisions," Crowley said.

Uh , Is this Some common sense coming from the Government ?
I'm Shocked !

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The U.S. State Department said it is rethinking a decision to give $2.5 million in aid to Libya, including to foundations run by the Libyan leader's sons, after lawmakers on Thursday asked it to cancel the plan.

In a letter to U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, two U.S. lawmakers said they were unwilling to give the aid because of the warm reception Tripoli recently gave a Libyan official convicted of involvement in the 1988 Lockerbie bombing.

They also accused Libyan leader Col. Muammar Gaddafi of showing "flagrant disrespect" for the 270 victims of the bombing during his visit to New York this week to attend the U.N. General Assembly.

"The celebration that President (Gaddafi) recently held in honor of ... the only man convicted in the bombing of Pan Am Flight 103, showed just how little remorse (he) has for the terrorist attacks that killed 270 civilians," Rep. Nita Lowey and Rep. Kay Granger wrote in a letter obtained by Reuters.

Lowey, a New York Democrat, chairs the influential House of Representatives appropriations subcommittee that oversees funding for the State Department and U.S. foreign assistance. Granger, of Texas, is the subcommittee's top Republican.

Taliban gets most of it's money from Gulf States

More money is coming from the Gulf than is coming from the drug trade to the Taliban," AP

BRUSSELS — Taliban militants are receiving more funding from their sympathizers abroad than from Afghanistan's illegal drug trade, the U.S. special envoy to Afghanistan and Pakistan said Tuesday.[...]

"More money is coming from the Gulf than is coming from the drug trade to the Taliban," Holbrooke told journalists at NATO headquarters in Brussels. He didn't identify the countries where the sympathizers were donating from, but nations located on the Persian Gulf include Iran, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates and Iraq.

NATO military officials in Afghanistan have estimated that the Taliban raise $60-$100 million a year from the trade in illegal narcotics, which has ballooned since the 2001 invasion of the country by U.S.-led forces.[...]

"The money is coming in from sympathizers from all over the world with the bulk of it appearing to come from the Gulf," he said, adding that he did not have hard figures for the amount of overseas funding reaching the Taliban.

"What I believe happens is that the Taliban funds local operations in the Pashtun belt out of drug money, but the overall effort gets massive amounts of money from outside Afghanistan," Holbrooke said.

Iran threatens funding for Hamas if it calls for truce

Not that Israel would consider a ceasefire with Hamas right now. But it is in Iran's best interest, with regard to their nuclear weapons program, that Israel be busy with Hamas until Obama's inauguration.

Just a few days ago it was revealed that Israel had approached The US about allowing IAF bomber jets fly over Iraq to hit Iran. President Bush spurned the Israeli initiative in favor of covert ops against Iran's nuclear facilities.

Lots of analysts predicted an Israeli strike against Iran between the election of Obama and his inauguration. After Obama's inauguration, Iran can expect dialogue with the US. Could Iran have pushed Hamas into a conflict with Israel to prevent a strike against its nuke facilities?

Iran's condition of further funding for Hamas only if it continues the fight give a little credence to the theory. I expect Iran to strongly call for an immediate ceasefire around the time of the inauguration.
Jerusalem Post....

Iran is exerting heavy pressure on Hamas not to accept the Egyptian proposal for a cease-fire with Israel, an Egyptian government official said on Sunday.

The official told The Jerusalem Post by phone that two senior Iranian officials who visited Damascus recently warned Hamas leaders against accepting the proposal.[...]

The Egyptian official said that the two Iranian emissaries, Ali Larijani, Speaker of the Iranian Parliament, and Said Jalili of the Iranian Intelligence Service, met in the Syrian capital with Hamas leader Khaled Mashaal and Islamic Jihad Secretary-General Ramadan Shallah.

"As soon as the Iranians heard about the Egyptian cease-fire initiative, they dispatched the two officials to Damascus on an urgent mission to warn the Palestinians against accepting it," the Egyptian government official told the Post.

"The Iranians threatened to stop weapons supplies and funding to the Palestinian factions if they agreed to a cease-fire with Israel. The Iranians want to fight Israel and the US indirectly. They are doing this through Hamas in Palestine and Hizbullah in Lebanon".
