Rescuers, relatives and friends broke into jubilant cheers as father-of-two Florencio Avalos emerged on the surface to breathe his first fresh air in 69 days after a claustrophobic ascent of around 2,050 feet through thick rock.

SAS defy orders and rescue captured comrades
I can't believe that SAS commanders in Iraq had to disobey orders from the brass back home in order to save two of their soldiers. Insane...absolutely insane. Daily Mail
The SAS launched a daring mission to rescue two of its own men held hostage in Iraq against the orders of the Ministry of Defence, the Daily Mail can reveal.
The elite unit was pushed to the brink of mutiny after it was banned from saving the SAS soldiers captured by militants because to do so would embarrass the Government.
The astonishing edict drove SAS officers close to mass resignation, according to a hardhitting report by the Tory MP Adam Holloway, a former Guards officer.

Pirates Vow Revenge: 'In the Future, America Will Be the One Mourning'
I doubt that we will be mourning at all , The rescue of Capt .Phillips has upset the Somali pirates ! that is just to Bad , This should be the only way these Third world rejects should be dealt with , And a few well placed Missiles would be nice too !

Somali pirates are vowing to retaliate for the deaths of three fellow pirates at the hands of U.S. Navy snipers.
The daring nighttime assault freed American freighter Capt. Richard Phillips, who had been held hostage on a lifeboat off the Horn of Africa for five days.
One of the pirates told the Associated Press that, "In the future, America will be the one mourning and crying."
Asked about fears that the shooting of the 3 pirates could lead to more violent confrontations with pirates in the future, Vice Adm. Bill Gortney, commander of the U.S. Navy's 5th Fleet told reporters at the Pentagon Sunday, "Yes. There's second and third order effects to every action. And this could escalate violence in this part of the world. No question about it."
Admiral Gortney also said that Capt. Phillips was in "imminent danger" when U.S. forces shot and killed three armed pirates holding him hostage on a lifeboat in the Indian Ocean. "If he was not in imminent danger, they were not to take this sort of action," he said. "He had a weapon aimed at him, and the on-scene commander saw that the weapon was aimed at him."
As one of the four pirates who had been holding Capt. Richard Phillips, 53, negotiated onboard the USS Bainbridge, special forces on the same U.S. ship saw Phillips move to the side of the lifeboat to relieve himself,
At that point, forces saw their opportunity and killed the other three pirates on the lifeboat,

Egyptian Forces Resuce Kidnapped Tourists
Egyptian forces, assisted by Italian and German intelligence agents, rescued 11 European tourists and 4 Egyptians after they were kidnapped. Half of the kidnappers were killed in the rescue operation. Guardian

Eleven European tourists and eight local guides kidnapped 10 days ago in Egypt have been rescued by troops and special forces, officials said today.
The five Germans, five Italians and one Romanian were rescued in an overnight operation by Egyptian and Sudanese forces near the Sudan-Chad border, an Egyptian security official said.
The Egyptian defence minister, Hussein Tantawi, said half of the kidnappers were killed in the rescue operation, according to the state news agency Mena. The report did not give a precise number or details on the rescue.The Italian foreign minister, Franco Frattini, suggested Italian and German special forces were involved. He told the Sky TG24 news channel that Sudan and Egypt carried out "a highly professional operation" with the "intervention of Italian intelligence and experts from the special forces" from Germany and Italy.
The tourists and local guides and drivers were taken to Cairo and were understood to be in good health.

French Commandos Free Hostages off Somalia
Good to see the hostages were rescued and in good health. Paying out ransoms only encourages more kidnappings plus the money goes to terrorism. Globe & Mail

PARIS — French commandos stormed a sailboat to free two French tourists who were being held for ransom by heavily-armed Somali pirates, President Nicolas Sarkozy said on Tuesday.
One pirate was killed and six others taken prisoner in the pre-dawn assault by some 30 troops. The freed hostages and the captured pirates were put on a French navy vessel sailing towards Djibouti, where France has an army base.
“This operation ... is a warning to all those engaged in this criminal activity. France will not accept that crime pays,” Mr. Sarkozy said after the operation.It was the second time this year that French troops had acted against Somali pirates. In April, French commandos captured six of them shortly after a ransom had been paid for the release of a French yacht and its 30-strong crew.
The couple freed on Tuesday were seized on Sept. 2 by gunmen who had demanded a ransom of more than $1.4-million and the release of the pirates captured in April.
Mr. Sarkozy said the freed hostages, who had been taking a sailing boat from Australia to France, were in good health.
He said he had ordered the assault on their boat when it became clear the pirates were sailing it to Eyl, a lawless former fishing outpost now used by gangs.
Mr. Sarkozy said any rescue attempt from Eyl would have been too dangerous and the hostages could have been held for months.
