CANBERRA, Australia -- Muslim women would have to remove veils and show their faces to police on request or risk a prison sentence under proposed new laws in Australia's most populous state that have drawn criticism as culturally insensitive.
A vigorous debate that the proposal has triggered reflects the cultural clashes being ignited by the growing influx of Muslim immigrants and the unease that visible symbols of Islam are causing in predominantly white Christian Australia since 1973 when the government relaxed its immigration policy.
Under the law proposed by the government of New South Wales, which includes Sydney, a woman who defies police by refusing to remove her face veil could be sentenced to a year in prison and fined $5,900.
The bill -- to be voted on by the state parliament in August -- has been condemned by civil libertarians and many Muslims as an overreaction to a traffic offense case involving a Muslim woman driver in a "niqab," or a veil that reveals only the eyes.
The government says the law would require motorists and criminal suspects to remove any head coverings so that police can identify them.
Critics say the bill smacks of anti-Muslim bias given how few women in Australia wear burqas. In a population of 23 million, only about 400,000 Australians are Muslim. Community advocates estimate that fewer than 2,000 women wear face veils, and it is likely that even a smaller percentage drives.

A 12-year-old girl who escaped the Taliban in Pakistan says the group is assembling an army of female suicide bombers to carry out attacks across the border.
Meena Gul, who comes from a family of Taliban militants, was detained by security personnel in January after an offensive destroyed militants hideouts in Charmang, Pakistan's The Express Tribune reported.
Gul told the Tribune she was being trained to be a suicide bomber, along with several other women, by her sister in law, Zainab, who fought Pakistani forces dressed as a man.
"She escorted eight women from our village to Afghanistan," she said.
Gul told the paper her brother, a Taliban commander, expected her to follow in the footsteps of her younger sister, who blew herself up in an attack in Afghanistan.
"I, however, managed to escape. I was too scared," she said.
Police were skeptical of Gul's story until Saturday when a burqa-clad bomber killed at least 40 people at a Pakistan food center, the Tribune reported.

Niqab wearing woman ticketed for erratic driving
A French woman, wearing a full niqab, was pulled over by police for erratic driving.

French police have fined a woman driver for erratic driving caused by her Islamic headscarf, just weeks after a similar incident sparked a major political row.
Police in Vaucluse in southern France had not stopped the driver for wearing the niqab, a veil that leaves only the eyes exposed, but for "erratic" driving, commanding officer Charles Bourillon said.
Mr Bourillon says officers decided to check the vehicle after it showed erratic behaviour on the road and it was only when they signalled for the driver to stop that they saw she was wearing a niqab.
"[The headscarf] was bothering the driver in her manoeuvres ... It was obvious she could not see a thing," he said.

Iran was nominated for a seat for the UN's Commission on the Status of Women while the US and other Western nations sat in the sidelines and did nothing.

The United States and 12 other Western democracies kept silent this week as Iran was nominated for membership of the United Nations’ Commission on the Status of Women (CSW), thus enabling Iran to get the seat.
In the four-year period beginning in 2011, Iran will help set U.N. policy on gender equality and the advancement of women.

Saudis shut down women's gym because it's against islam or something

While gyms for men in the gender-segregated conservative Islamic society are permitted, women's health clubs are forbidden, despite a clear demand shown by a surge in underground facilities in the past two years.

Prosecutors have labeled Noor Almaleki's death an "honor killing,"* saying the elder Almaleki killed his daughter because she dishonored the family by not following traditional Iraqi or Muslim values. She reportedly married a man in Iraq and returned to Arizona to live with a boyfriend and his mother in Surprise.
Thomas announced Almaleki was also being charged with attempted first-degree murder in the attack on his daughter's friend, Amal Khalaf, 43. Khalaf is the boyfriend's mother and is expected to recover from her injuries, police said.
Almaleki was charged with two additional felony counts for leaving the scene of a serious injury accident. Thomas said his office is still determining whether to seek the death penalty for Almaleki. He called the case "tragic," saying the county will prosecute Almaleki to the full extent.

M Nur Juned, head of West Aceh district’s Shariah division, said in a telephone interview with the Jakarta Globe on Thursday that authorities would regulate the clothes that people were allowed to wear.

The "Christmas Cutters" and "Mutilation parties" are coming to town.
Hundreds of British schoolgirls are facing the terrifying prospect of female genital mutilation (FGM) over the Christmas holidays as experts warn the practice continues to flourish across the country. Parents typically take their daughters back to their country of origin for FGM during school holidays, but The Independent on Sunday has been told that "cutters" are being flown to the UK to carry out the mutilation at "parties" involving up to 20 girls to save money.
The police face growing criticism for failing to prosecute a single person for carrying out FGM in 25 years; new legislation from 2003 which prohibits taking a girl overseas for FGM has also failed to secure a conviction.
Experts say the lack of convictions, combined with the Government's failure to invest enough money in education and prevention strategies, mean the practice continues to thrive. Knowledge of the health risks and of the legislation remains patchy among practising communities, while beliefs about the supposed benefits for girls remain firm, according to research by the Foundation for Women's Health, Research and Development (Forward).
As a result, specialist doctors and midwives are struggling to cope with increasing numbers of women suffering from long-term health problems, including complications during pregnancy and childbirth.
FGM is classified into four types, of varying severity; type 3 is the most mutilating and involves total removal of the clitoris, labia and a narrowing of the whole vagina.
An estimated 70,000 women living in the UK have undergone FGM, and 20,000 girls remain at risk, according to Forward. The practice is common in 28 African countries, including Somalia, Sudan and Nigeria, as well as some Middle Eastern and Asian countries such as Malaysia and Yemen. It is generally considered to be an essential rite of passage to suppress sexual pleasure, preserve girls' purity and cleanliness, and is necessary for marriage in many communities even now. It has no religious significance.
But you sure don't hear the Imams putting a FATWA on the practice now, do you? No, but the multicultural mavens in the UK have appointed something called an "FGM Co-ordinator" to "drive forward a co-ordinated government response to this appalling crime and make recommendations for future work."
No word on making any arrests, though. I guess that wouldn't be politically correct. Or something.

KABUL (Reuters) - Afghan women are among the worst off in the world, violence against them is "endemic" and Afghanistan's government fails to protect them from crimes such as rape and murder, a rights group said on Monday.
Human Rights Watch said in a report the situation for women in Afghanistan is "dismal in every area."
"Women will not seek help because of their fears of police abuse and corruption, or their fears of retaliation by perpetrators of violence," said the 96-page report, which is based on 120 interviews from different Afghan provinces.
Afghanistan is a deeply conservative, Muslim country where women have only been allowed to return to work and education since 2001, when the Taliban were overthrown by U.S.-led forces.
"Whereas the trend had clearly been positive for women's rights from 2001-2005, the trend now is negative in many areas ... it is a reflection of the power of conservative leaders who want to deny women their basic rights," the report said.
The report cites cases where rapists have been pardoned by the government, girls and women have been imprisoned for running away from home, rape victims have been charged with adultery and where women in public life have been murdered.
It comes a week after the United Nations said violence and rape against women in Afghanistan was a problem of "profound proportions."

A Saudi judge has given his official recognition of a mans right to physically admonish his Muslim wife if she overspends.Actually it is in a book, the quran to be exact.
Judge Hamad Al-Razine has determined that a wife can be slapped on the face for overspending.
The judge in this instance is of course a Muslim in the Islamic nation of Saudia Arabia. [...]
The judge gave the example in an english language daily newspaper Arab News of a wife being given SR 1,200 ($320) and then having her spend 900 riyals ($240) on a black hoodie (an abaya) from a name brand shop, instead of getting one at the Arab version of Wal-Mart.[...]
"This is how men in Saudi Arabia see women," she ( Wajeha Al-Huwaider - Saudi women's rights activist) said in a telephone interview from the Saudi city of Dahran. 1 in 7 Britons hold retarded views regarding women
Over 14% of Britons think it's acceptable to beat a woman around if she's dressed too sexy in public. Judging by all the appeasement going on in Britain I bet this 14% would prefer if the women walked around in those islamic tents, the ones that only show the eyes.

Maybe it's not the social-economic status of peolpe that cause them to burn their partners but rather a sick ideology otherwise known as islam.
Amer Mushtaq Butt, 28, doused Chahrazade Belayni in petrol and set fire to her on the street as she was leaving her home in the under-privileged Paris suburb of Neuilly-sur-Marne in 2005.
She suffered third-degree burns on 60 percent of her body, fell into a coma and underwent many operations. Belayni, now 21, works for the police.
"I want him to pay for what he did, not for my sake but to show other girls who have problems with their partners that it's possible to fight back and the justice system won't abandon them," she told reporters just before the trial opened.[...]
Human rights groups such as the prominent "Ni Putes Ni Soumises" ("Neither whores nor submissive women") say violence against women is rife in certain poor communities with high Muslim populations on the outskirts of French cities.

"Under no circumstances is sexual violence permissible or acceptable in Australia," Rudd said over cleric Samir Abu Hamza's reported remarks in a sermon posted on the Internet.
"I would call upon this Islamic cleric to publicly apologise and repudiate his remarks," Rudd said.
The cleric said in his sermon, entitled "The keys to a successful marriage," that it was a man's right to demand sex from his wife whenever he felt like it, the Daily Telegraph reported.
"If the husband was to ask her for a sexual relationship and she is preparing the bread on the stove, she must leave it and come and respond to her husband, she must respond," Hamza was quoted as saying.
He reportedly scorned Australian laws which make it an offence for a man to force his wife to have sex, saying: "Amazing, how can a person rape his wife?"
Hamza also said Islamic law allowed men to hit their wives as a last resort but should not bruise them or make them bleed, the paper reported.

Some Imams 'biased against women'
Its not the imams who are biased against women but shariah law itself. BBCA Muslim think-tank has found some UK Imams discriminate against women when enforcing Islamic Sharia law.

Scholars at the Centre for Islamic Pluralism (CIP) interviewed 90 Muslims in London, the West Midlands, Lancashire and West Yorkshire.
They found some women did not get fair hearings in forced marriage, arranged marriage and domestic violence matters.
It comes after an NHS doctor was freed in Bangladesh following claims she was being held there for a forced marriage.
Sharia law governs every aspect of a Muslim's life, and Imams or scholars give out rulings on how to live by God's wishes. Some mosques hold Sharia courts."Our research shows that domestic violence and forced marriages seem to be the dominant problems that women are facing and seeking Sharia rulings on.
"In every case it is a male who is the defendant coming from India, Pakistan or Bangladesh.
"Some ladies have approached the Imams and the Imams... have encouraged the ladies to stay with their husband or with their in-laws, whereby they have a duty bound under the Sharia."
He said he knew of a 15-year-old girl in Pakistan who was tricked into marriage over the telephone with a 40-year-old man from Sheffield, who had the mental age of a four-year-old child.
"The Home Office refused to recognise the validity of the marriage but the Islamic Sharia Council in Britain accepted it," said Dr Al-Alawi.

Iran arrests 49 for wearing 'satanic' clothing
It's a shame that the mullahacracy would want to cover up Iran's beautiful women, like Claudia Lynx (pictured). Telegraph Mahmoud Rahmani, head of police in the northern city of Qaemshahr, where the arrests took place, denounced Iranians who wore western-style clothes and haircuts.
"Police confronted rascals and thugs who appeared in public wearing satanic fashions and unsuitable clothing," he said.
He added that five local barber shops were closed and twenty more warned for "promoting western hairstyles". These are believed to include spiky haircuts.
Periodic crackdowns on western styles have been a feature of Iran since the Islamic revolution brought the ayatollahs to power in 1979.[...]
But while crackdowns normally last only a few months, the current one has been going on for well over a year.
Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has in the past suggested Iran's enemies may try to stage a "soft" or "velvet" revolution by infiltrating corrupt culture or ideas.
Visitors to Iran are often surprised by the number of young women in the capital city Tehran who wear figure-hugging trousers and make-up, often pushing back their headscarves to expose their faces.

Pakistan: 10000 cases of violence against women in the past three years

During the Question Hour in the National Assembly on Thursday, Rehman Malik said that a total of 3236 women were killed during years 2005-07, 1019 were killed under the cover of honor killing, 1931 were forcedly raped, acid was thrown on 53 women, 45 were burnt when their cooking stoves blown up and a large number of 4250 home maids were tortured including attempts to take their life. He added that during this period no woman was sentenced to death.

The most prominent female police officer in Afghanistan has been murdered by the Taliban, the latest victim in a vicious campaign against women in public life by Muslim fundamentalists.
Malalai Kakar, who specialised in rescuing abused women, was shot dead outside her home in Kandahar in an attack which also left her 15-year-old son, one of her six children, critically injured.
"We killed Malalai Kakar," said a Taliban spokesman, Yousuf Ahmadi "She was our target, and we successfully eliminated our target." The Islamist group had previously carried out several unsuccessful attacks on her life, and those of her female colleagues, before yesterday's lethal ambush.
