(Reuters) - Suspected U.S. drone aircraft strikes killed at least 11 Muslim militants in Pakistan on Saturday, suggesting there will no letup this year in a campaign Washington says is hurting al Qaeda-linked groups.
The attacks by unmanned aircraft in the North Waziristan region -- a sanctuary for al Qaeda and Taliban militants -- came after five militants were killed in a similar strike in the same region late on Friday.

Islamabad, Pakistan (CNN) -- A suspected U.S. drone strike in Pakistan's tribal region killed six alleged militants, the latest such attack in the region, Pakistani intelligence officials said.
Based on a CNN count, Tuesday's strike brings the number to 109 this year, compared with 52 in all of 2009.
It took place in North Waziristan, one of seven districts in Pakistan's volatile tribal region bordering Afghanistan, where suspected drone strikes targeting militants have spiked in recent weeks.
Two intelligence officials said the suspected drone fired two missiles on a militant hideout in the area of Ghulam Khan.
Later, a suspected drone circled around the blast site and fired two more missiles.

Islamabad, Pakistan (CNN) -- Two suspected U.S. drone strikes in Pakistan's tribal region killed 18 alleged militants Monday, intelligence officials told CNN.
It was the latest in a series of aerial assaults targeting insurgents in North Waziristan, one of seven districts in Pakistan's volatile tribal region bordering Afghanistan.
In one attack, a suspected drone fired four missiles on a militants' vehicle in the Mir Ali area of the district, two intelligence officials said. Six people died in the attack.
In the second attack, a suspected drone fired two missiles at a militant hideout in the same district, killing 12, officials said.
Based on a count by the CNN Islamabad bureau, Monday's suspected drone strikes bring the number to 108 this year, compared with 52 in all of 2009.

Two American missile attacks killed 15 people Friday in a region in northwest Pakistan that has seen few such strikes in the past, Pakistani officials said, in an apparent expansion of the CIA-led covert war inside the country.
The strikes took place in two villages in the Tirah Valley in the Khyber region, the Pakistani intelligence and government officials said. The same valley, which is known to be home to militants, was hit late Thursday in another U.S. attack.
The missiles, fired from unmanned drones, hit houses in the villages of Speen Drang and Shandana, the officials said. It was unclear exactly how many people were killed in each respective village.

(Reuters) - An Israeli air strike has killed a Hamas military commander and rocket-maker in the Gaza Strip, the Islamist group that rules the Palestinian territory said on Saturday.
Issa Batran, whose caravan was hit by a missile, was the first Hamas commander killed in an Israeli air strike in Gaza since Israel wound up a three-week military offensive there in January 2009.
Hundreds of Hamas supporters attended his funeral.
The Israeli military said it launched air strikes against Hamas targets in Gaza after a rocket fired from the enclave exploded in the city of Ashkelon.
The air strikes also hit a training camp used by Hamas and smuggling tunnels along Gaza's southern border with Egypt. Several people were wounded by debris, Palestinian medics said.
Hamas said Batran was a rocket-maker and the head of its military wing in the central Gaza Strip. The militant group has a rocket arsenal of crude, homemade projectiles and longer-range rockets smuggled in through tunnels under the border with Egypt.
Batran escaped an Israeli attack on his house in January 2009 during a devastating military offensive aimed at stopping daily rocket fire from Gaza into Israeli cities. His wife and children were killed in the attack.

MIRANSHAH, Pakistan — US missiles destroyed a compound used by Islamist fighters in Pakistan's tribal belt on Thursday, killing at least 10 militants in the first such attack for two weeks, officials said.
A US drone fired at least two missiles into the compound in the village of Sheerani Mada Khel in the district of North Waziristan, a Taliban and Al-Qaeda-linked stronghold heavily targeted in a covert US drone war this year.
"At least 10 militants were killed," a senior security official told AFP on condition of anonymity.
"Most of the dead militants are said to be foreigners," he added, but said that their nationalities were not yet known.

Pakistan (Reuters) - A U.S. drone aircraft fired two missiles in Pakistan's North Waziristan region on the Afghan border on Saturday, killing 12 militants, intelligence officials said .
The missile attack took place hours after the U.S. special envoy for Afghanistan and Pakistan, Richard Holbrooke, landed in Islamabad for talks as part of the Pakistan-U.S. strategic dialogue initiated in March.
The drone targeted a suspected militant compound in Sokhel village, about 25 km (16 miles) east of Miranshah, the main town of the region and known as a hotbed of Taliban and al Qaeda militants, the intelligence officials said.
"Twelve militants have been killed and three wounded in the attack on a compound which is linked to Taliban and al Qaeda," one intelligence official told Reuters on condition of anonymity.
A second intelligence official confirmed the account. A resident, Mohammad Rafiq, told Reuters he had seen 11 bodies.

Yousaf Khan, a government administrator in the region's main town of Miran Shah, said 15 alleged militants were killed.
He said officers were still gathering information about the identities of the victims.
Late Thursday, two people were killed in another strike in North Waziristan. Officials did not say whether they were believed to be militants.

MIRAMSHAH: A US drone attack on a suspected militant compound Saturday killed six militants in northwestern tribal belt, security officials said.
The target of the attack was a house used by militants in Mohammad Khel village, some 25 kilometres (15 miles) west of Miramshah, the main town in North Waziristan, officials said.
“Two US drones fired four missiles, we have reports that six militants have been killed,” a senior security official in Peshawar told AFP by telephone.

PESHAWAR, Pakistan (AP) -- Pakistani troops repulsed a Taliban attack on a checkpoint close to the Afghan border Wednesday in fighting that killed six soldiers and 25 insurgents, the armed forces said.
Pakistan has carried out a series of operations in the border region over the last 18 months, but the militants have proved resilient foes. The U.S. has pushed Islamabad to keep up its offensives, arguing that militants on its side of the border are involved in attacks on American and NATO troops in Afghanistan.
Wednesday's attack occurred in the Bara area of Khyber, a tribal region home to a top supply route for troops across the border.
A statement from Pakistan's paramilitary Frontier Corps said the attackers used several suicide car bombs, but that soldiers fought back, destroying the vehicles during the clash. At least 15 soldiers also were wounded in the attack, the statement said.
The information is nearly impossible to verify independently. Access to Khyber and other tribal regions is restricted, and border area as a whole is remote and dangerous.
Also Wednesday, at least six alleged insurgents were killed by suspected U.S. missiles in the nearby tribal region of North Waziristan, two Pakistani intelligence officials said.
Two missile attacks one hour apart destroyed an abandoned school near the town of Mir Ali, said the officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to media.

(Reuters) - A U.S. drone aircraft fired two missiles into an al Qaeda and Taliban hideout in northwest Pakistan on the Afghan border on Sunday, killing eight militants, Pakistani intelligence officials said.
The identity of the militants killed in the Lowari Mandi area of the North Waziristan tribal region was not known.
The United States has stepped up attempts to kill leading militants in North Waziristan since a suicide bombing at a fortified U.S. base across the border in the Afghan province of Khost killed seven CIA employees last December.
"Fire is still raging in the targeted compound," resident Abdul Akbar said by telephone.
Authorities said they had found the bodies of three tribesmen believed to have been shot dead by militants on suspicion of spying for the United States.
Separately, 16 militants were killed when Pakistani helicopters pounded their positions in the tribal regions of Kurram and Orakzai. And three people were killed and 18 wounded when a police vehicle hit a bomb in the city of Quetta.
U.S. officials last week said they believed Hussein al-Yemeni, a top al Qaeda planner who Washington believes helped to organize the Khost bombing, had been killed in a drone strike in North Waziristan this month.
Pakistani officially opposes U.S. drone strikes and says the civilian casualties they frequently cause undermine its own efforts against the Taliban. Instead, it wants the United States to give it drone technology so it can carry out its own strikes.

ISLAMABAD — The brother of senior Afghan Taliban commander Siraj Haqqani has been killed in a U.S. missile strike in northwestern Pakistan, Pakistani intelligence officials said Friday.
The death was the latest in a string of blows to militants operating in Pakistan and neighboring Afghanistan, including the capture in recent weeks of the Taliban's No. 2 leader, that together are seen as the most significant strike against the insurgents in years.
Mohammed Haqqani and three other close associates of Siraj Haqqani were killed when missiles struck a house on Thursday night in the Dande Darpa Khel area of North Waziristan, near the border with Afghanistan, two Pakistani intelligence officials said.
The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly to the media.
The officials said the attack was apparently aimed at Siraj Haqqani, a top Taliban commander with suspected close ties to Al Qaeda who is accused of masterminding ambushes of American troops in Afghanistan. It was not known if Siraj Haqqani was hurt in the strike.
The Haqqani network is an autonomous militant group that nonetheless has ties to Al Qaeda and technically pledges allegiance to Afghan Taliban chief Mullah Omar. The group also has a history of links to Pakistani intelligence that some suspect continue today.

Four missiles slammed into the house in the Shaktoi area of South Waziristan, the same region where a drone strike Thursday targeted a meeting of militant commanders in an apparently unsuccessful attempt to kill Pakistani Taliban chief Hakimullah Mehsud.

The radical Muslim imam linked to the rampage at Fort Hood reportedly is believed to have been killed in a Yemen airstrike that may have also taken out the region's top Al Qaeda leader and 30 other militants.
The raid in Yemen's east targeted an Al Qaeda leadership meeting held to organize terror attacks. U.S. officials believe radical cleric Anwar Awlaki was "probably" one of dozens of militants killed in the strike, a source confirmed to FOX News.
"Awlaki is suspected to be dead [in the air raid]," Reuters quoted an unnamed Yemeni official as saying.
The head of Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, Nasser al-Wahishi and his deputy, Saeed al-Saudi Shahrani, were present at the meeting and are believed to have died, but their deaths could not immediately be confirmed. "The raid was carried out as dozens of members of Al Qaeda were meeting in Wadi Rafadh," a source told AFP, referring to a rugged location about 400 miles east of the capital. "Members of the group's leadership, including Saad al-Fathani and Mohammad Ahmed Saleh al-Omir, were among those killed," he was quoted as saying.

PESHAWAR: New Pakistani Taliban chief Hakeemullah Mehsud appeared in a video clip broadcast on local television on Monday, dispelling rumours of his death and vowing 'severe' new attacks.
Hakeemullah Mehsud claimed to have taken over the reins of the feared Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan in late August, after finally confirming that their chief Baitullah Mehsud was killed in a US missile strike that month.
But rumours since swirled that Hakeemullah Mehsud was also dead, with a senior US counter-terrorism official on Saturday saying they were looking into reports he was killed during infighting over the succession.
'I am alive and sitting in front of you. All the stories about my death were baseless. You can see me, that I am alive,' a healthy-looking Hakimullah Mehsud said in a video clip.
DawnNews TV and other private television stations, which showed the video, said the footage was recorded Sunday at an undisclosed location.
'We will take severe revenge for Baitullah Mehsud's killing and the continued drone strikes... both America and Pakistan will have to face the consequences,' said the warlord, believed to be aged about 30.
'We have respect for al Qaeda and the jihadist organisations -- we are with them,' he added.

Top Militant Believed Killed in U.S. Missile Strike in Pakistan

ISLAMABAD — The Al Qaeda-linked leader of the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan is believed to have been killed by a U.S. missile strike in Pakistan's northwest, intelligence officials said Friday. The Taliban denied the claim.
Tahir Yuldash's death would be a significant blow to the militant groups that have wreaked havoc along the Afghan-Pakistan border and the latest victory for the covert American missile program.
Yuldash was wounded in an Aug. 27 missile strike in the South Waziristan tribal region and is believed to have died a few days later, said the four intelligence officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to the media.
Many Uzbek militants hide in Pakistan's tribal regions and are involved in militancy there and in Afghanistan. The Uzbeks are considered some of the fiercest insurgents.
The Pakistani officials said they had received the information about Yuldash's death from militant sources. However, Qari Hussain, a top militant among the Taliban ranks, called The Associated Press on Friday to insist that Yuldash was not dead.
"These reports are all fake," Hussain said from an undisclosed location. "He is alive."
Independent confirmation of Yuldash's death is nearly impossible to obtain. South Waziristan is a major Al Qaeda and Taliban stronghold in Pakistan's tribal belt, and access is severely restricted as well as dangerous.

MIRANSHAH, Pakistan (reuters) - A suspected U.S. drone fired a missile at a Taliban target in Pakistan's North Waziristan tribal region on Monday, killing at least four militants, intelligence officials and residents said.
Pakistani Taliban chief, Baitullah Mehsud, was killed in a similar attack in the neighboring South Waziristan region last month.
The latest attack took place near Mir Ali, the second major town of North Waziristan and a sanctuary for militants linked to al Qaeda and the Taliban.
The blast was so huge that it could be heard as far as Miranshah, the main town of the sparsely-populated region, which is about 24 km (15 miles) from Mir Ali.
Akhtar Rasool, a resident of Mir Ali, said the missile appeared to have struck a militant vehicle.
"The vehicles is in flames and we can see smoke rising from the scene," he told Reuters by telephone.
An intelligence official said at least four militants were killed and that the death toll may rise.

WASHINGTON — Taliban chief Baitullah Mehsud was killed last week in a CIA drone attack while getting a leg massage on the roof of his father-in-law's house, CNN said Monday, citing an unnamed US official.
A US counterterrorism official told AFP, meanwhile, that "there are strong indications (Mehsud) is dead" following a drone attack.
"No one is expecting him home for dinner tonight," the official said.
US President Barack Obama is being told Mehsud was killed after a "dramatic escalation" of nine unmanned drones specifically targeting the Taliban leader in recent weeks, the US official told CNN television.
On Wednesday night, US surveillance in Pakistan spied a man on the roof of Mehsud's father-in-law's home in South Waziristan.
The description was of a "short, stocky man who was following the physical description" of Mehsud, CNN said, citing the intelligence official.
A woman was massaging the man's leg and the Central Intelligence Agency knew Mehsud had diabetes, experienced pain in his legs, and often sought relief in that way, the report said.

PESHAWAR, Pakistan (Reuters) - The wife of Pakistani Taliban chief Baitullah Mehsud was killed on Wednesday in a missile strike by a suspected U.S. drone in the South Waziristan tribal region, a relative told Reuters.
It was uncertain whether Mehsud was present when the missiles struck a house belonging to his father-in-law in Makeen, an almost inaccessible village in the heart of Mehsud lands on the Afghan border.
The United States has placed a $5 million reward on the head of Mehsud, an ally of al Qaeda widely regarded in Pakistan as Public Enemy No. 1.
Shortly before 1.00 a.m. (3 p.m. EDT Tuesday), two missiles struck the sprawling, high-walled compound of Ikramuddin Mehsud, a cleric whose daughter, Baitullah Mehsud, got married last November.
A security official in the region said two militants were killed. The relative said Mehsud's wife was also among the dead.
"I confirm that the woman who was killed in the strike was the wife of Baitullah Mehsud," the relative, who did not want to be identified, told Reuters by telephone.

Al Qaida paranoid of Predator Drone Attacks
For good reason too. Since the start of the year approximately 16 Predator Drone strikes have killed around 268 terrorists in Pakistan's North Western region where the taliban and al Qaida are holed up. So far in July over 70 terrorists have been killed by Predator Drones.
The latest Predator Drone strike possibly tagged a taliban leader and a Predator Drone attack in June just missed Baitullah Mehsud by hours.
Just the sound or sight of the Predator Drones causes panic. So much so that al Qaida terrorists have violently turned on one another out of confusion and mistrust.

A new book published by Al Qaeda shows that the terrorist group is under intense pressure and in "deathly fear" of U.S. counterterrorism efforts in Pakistan, terror experts say.[...]....
The book accuses some in Al Qaeda's ranks of being spies who provide intelligence, including information about Al Qaeda camps and safehouses, to U.S. forces. According to the book, these "Muslim spies" have allowed the U.S. to use its Predator drone campaign to paralyze Al Qaeda leadership.
"It would be no exaggeration to say that the first line in the raging Crusader campaign waged by America and its allies against the Muslims and their lands is the network of spies, of various and sundry sorts and kinds," says the book, translated by the Washington-based Middle East Media Research Institute, or MEMRI
"Their effects are seen: carnage, destruction, arrest, and pursuit, but they themselves remain unseen, just like Satan and his ilk who see us while remaining unseen."
