The top leader of Colombia's main rebel group, the bookish ideologue Alfonso Cano, was killed Friday in a military bombing attack in the country's southwest, authorities said.
"The fingerprints matched," said one senior security official who confirmed the death, adding that Cano was killed in "a standard military operation" in Cauca state. The official spoke on condition he not be further identified.
Cano, the 53-year-old head of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC, had been the top target of Colombian authorities since September 2010, when they killed the insurgency's military chief, Mono Jojoy, also in a bombing raid.

Nato says at least 115 insurgents have been killed in ongoing operations in a northeastern Afghan province known for being a hotbed of foreign militant fighters.
The US-led alliance said on Thursday the fighting in rugged Kunar province near the Afghan-Pakistani border has been going on since around October, 15.
Nato says the coalition and its Afghan partners have killed at least 115 insurgents over the past week to 10 days.
It says Nato and Afghan forces have been involved in a ”series of multiple, smaller operations that have a combined, larger impact.”

Its funny sometimes, reading news from other countries, especially when it comes to terrorism anything.
According to the Jakarta globe here, terrorism laws are bad for human rights, arresting and jailing people for joining groups that are affiliated with Al Qaeda, is just not right it seems;the U.N. agrees...

So I guess it would be better to sit back and pick up the pieces of a suicide bomber and his or her victims after the fact instead of say, arresting them before hand ?

Pakistani Police Safely Recover Kidnapped American
Well it was not the Taliban that kidnapped Mr. Weinstein, they would not have found him so quickly.

Using tips from arrested suspects, police on Thursday safely recovered a U.S. development expert who was kidnapped almost two weeks ago in the eastern Pakistani city of Lahore, a senior police official said.
Police traced the whereabouts of Warren Weinstein, 70, to Khushab city, located some 125 miles (200 kilometers) northwest of Lahore, and freed him during an early morning operation, said Lahore police chief Malik Ahmed Raza.
The U.S. Embassy in Islamabad could not immediately confirm that Weinstein had been found.

Kabul, Afghanistan (CNN) -- At least 80 militants were killed in a series of operations involving Afghan and NATO forces during a day-long firefight last week in the country's restive southeast, Paktika provincial governor Mukhlas Afghan said Sunday.
NATO said it could only confirm 50 insurgents were killed in the fight.
The operation, which began Wednesday and spanned the night into Thursday, was fought in an "known Haqqani network" area.
The Haqqani network is an insurgent group loosely affiliated with the Taliban and is believed to be based in Pakistan's lawless frontier territories.

PESHAWAR, Pakistan -- A pair of U.S. missile strikes hit a vehicle and a compound Wednesday in a tribal region near the Afghan border, killing 23 suspected militants, Pakistani intelligence officials said.
The two missile strikes were the fourth and fifth of the week, and the latest sign that the U.S. has no intention of abandoning the tactic despite public disapproval in Pakistan and a downturn in relations between Islamabad and Washington following the American raid that killed Usama bin Laden.
The strikes occurred within minutes of each other, the four Pakistani intelligence officials said, speaking on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to brief the media.
One missile hit a vehicle carrying five men, while the other struck a nearby compound, killing 18 people in the Shawal area, which lies along the border that separates the South and North Waziristan tribal regions.
Both regions are home to myriad militant groups, including several involved in attacks on Western forces across the border in Afghanistan.
The area hit Wednesday was on the North Waziristan side, in territory under the control of Hafiz Gul Bahadur, a warlord involved in the Afghan fight.
North Waziristan is the usual target for U.S. missiles because it is home to more groups fighting in Afghanistan and because the Pakistani military has resisted U.S. appeals to launch an offensive there. But the strikes this week have mostly hit South Waziristan or along the border of the two regions.

A suicide car bombing in the Iraqi city of Tikrit has killed at least 12 people, police say.
At least another 19 people were injured in the attack which struck the hometown of the former leader Saddam Hussein.
The attack targeted the entrance to a complex of palaces which formerly belonged to him and which currently houses security offices.
It comes three days after attacks on a Tikrit mosque and hospital killed at least 21 people.
Monday's attack was "a suicide car bomb that blew up at the main gate while a process of handing over checkpoints from the police to the army was taking place", Hassan Abdulla, media adviser to the head of the local provincial council, told Reuters news agency.
Mr Abdulla said those killed included several military officers, among them a colonel who was the head of military intelligence in Tikrit.

"At least five people were martyred including a police inspector and 20 others were wounded as the bomb blast hit a police vehicle deployed for security of the convoy," senior police official Nisar Khan Marwat said.

Blasts at Yemen bullet factory kill at least 110

(Reuters) - A series of blasts at a bullet factory in south Yemen killed at least 110 people on Monday when residents broke in to steal ammunition a day after clashes between militants and the army in the town, doctors said.
Witnesses said the blasts, possibly triggered by a cigarette, caused a massive fire in the factory in the town of Jaar in Abyan province, where al Qaeda militants and mainly leftist southern separatists are active.
"This accident is a true catastrophe, the first of its kind in Abyan," said one doctor at the state-run hospital. "There are so many burned bodies. I can't even describe the situation."
Doctors put the death toll at 110, but said that even arriving at a figure was difficult because the charred remains were difficult to count. They said some victims, including women and children, would be buried in a mass grave.
Scores were wounded, many suffering from burns, doctors said, and many bodies remained inside the factory, which also contained stores of gunpowder.

PESHAWAR: Two government schools were blown up in northwestern Pakistan’s Sherkera and Matni areas, DawnNews reported.
Unknown assailants used explosives and destroyed the two schools in the two areas in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.
It is pertinent to note that over 500 schools have been destroyed in attacks across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (Fata).

KHAR, Pakistan -- About 22,000 Pakistani villagers have fled military operations against Islamist militants in a tribal region near the Afghan border, a government administrator and the army said Friday.
The offensive, involving aerial bombing, artillery and ground troops, began Jan. 27 in Mohmand, said Roshan Khan Mehsud, the region's government representative. He said nearly 100 insurgents had been killed so far, and there had been "some casualties" on the army side. He did not mention any civilian casualties.

Four exploded within the Iraqi capital itself. A car bomb in Baghdad's mainly Shi'ite northwestern district of Kadhimiya exploded near a bus carrying Iranian pilgrims, killing one and wounding seven, police and Interior Ministry sources said.
Other car bombs detonated near a hotel in Baghdad's central Abu Nawas street, two police patrols in the southern Ilaam district and in al-Mesbah in central Baghdad, killing three people, including a policeman, and wounding 18, the sources said.
Elsewhere, a car bomb killed two people and wounded four in Taji, 20 km (12 miles) north of Baghdad, an Interior Ministry source said. A police source said it was a roadside bomb.

PESHAWAR: Three people, including two paramilitary soldiers, were killed in a roadside bomb blast in northwest Pakistan’s Orakzai tribal region on Saturday, officials said.
An improvised explosive device planted by militants went off in the town of Ibrahimzai during a routine patrol by paramilitary soldiers, a security official said.
“Two soldiers and one civilian were killed in the blast,” Abdul Qadir, a local administration official, told AFP.
Seven other people — one soldier and six civilians — were wounded in the explosion near the bazaar in Ibrahimzai, he said.

PARACHINAR: Six militants and a Pakistani soldier were killed in a gunbattle in the Orakzai tribal region, a government official said.
Aurangzeb Khan, a local administrator, said the fighting Tuesday in Orakzai began after insurgents attacked troops stationed there.
Security forces have been targeting militants in Orakzai since March when Pakistan dispatched troops there to kill or capture insurgents belonging to or allied with the Taliban and al-Qaeda.

French police have arrested 12 people in two separate counterterrorism raids, amid a state of high alert for attacks in the country.
Nine people arrested in Marseille, the southern port city, on Tuesday morning were being investigated for suspected links to a "terrorist enterprise", police said.
Weapons including a Kalashnikov rifle, a pump action shotgun and ammunition were also seized in the raid, an official was quoted by the AFP news agency as saying.
Another three men were arrested in Marseille and Bordeaux, in France's southwest, on alleged ties to a group recruiting fighters for Afghanistan.
The trio were linked to Ryad Hannouni, a Frenchman arrested in the Italian city of Naples last weekend and suspected of being connected to al-Qaeda fighters, police said.

Dearborn Police Chief Ron Haddad said today he regrets that a Muslim leader died in Dearborn during a shootout with FBI agents.
But he supports the view of the state Attorney General report released Thursday that said no state laws were broken in the Oct. 28 shooting of Imam Luqman Ameen Abdullah in Dearborn.
“The unnatural loss of life under any circumstances is profoundly regrettable and this case is no different,” said Chief Haddad in a statement. “Imam Luqman Abdullah had family, friends, and a religious following who have all been impacted by this event.”
At the same time, he said Abdullah caused his own death. The Dearborn police department interviewed 85 witnesses and FBI agents in their own investigation.
“It is important to note that four out of five of the defendants in the warehouse surrendered without incident and were not injured,” the city of Dearborn said. “It is clear that the decisions made by Imam Luqman Abdullah, when confronted by the arresting authorities on that day, put into action a series of events that ultimately lead to his death. Careful review of the facts have revealed that Imam Luqman Abdullah fired three shots in the direction of agents, which resulted in the death of an FBI K-9 (dog) prior to any agents returning fire.”

Iran's elite Revolutionary Guards said on Sunday they had killed the "main elements" behind a September bombing in northwestern Iran, in an area near the Iran-Iraq border, that had killed 12 people and injured 80.
The blast took place during an annual military parade in the city of Mahabad. Iranian authorities blamed it on "anti-revolutionary" militants backed by the United States and Israel.
"The perpetrators of this assassination were killed on Iraqi soil and security forces are still perusing evidence to identify the architects of this act of terrorism," lawmaker Abdol Mohammad Baba Ahmadi Milani was quoted as saying by the website of Iran's English-language state-run Press TV.
The lawmaker did not give further details on the operation but said video of it would soon be released.
