(Reuters) - If Egypt's President Hosni Mubarak is toppled, Israel will lose one of its very few friends in a hostile neighborhood and President Barack Obama will bear a large share of the blame, Israeli pundits said on Monday.
Political commentators expressed shock at how the United States as well as its major European allies appeared to be ready to dump a staunch strategic ally of three decades, simply to conform to the current ideology of political correctness.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has told ministers of the Jewish state to make no comment on the political cliffhanger in Cairo, to avoid inflaming an already explosive situation. But Israel's President Shimon Peres is not a minister.
"We always have had and still have great respect for President Mubarak," he said on Monday. He then switched to the past tense. "I don't say everything that he did was right, but he did one thing which all of us are thankful to him for: he kept the peace in the Middle East."
Newspaper columnists were far more blunt.
One comment by Aviad Pohoryles in the daily Maariv was entitled "A Bullet in the Back from Uncle Sam." It accused Obama and his Secretary of State Hillary Clinton of pursuing a naive, smug, and insular diplomacy heedless of the risks.
Who is advising them, he asked, "to fuel the mob raging in the streets of Egypt and to demand the head of the person who five minutes ago was the bold ally of the president ... an almost lone voice of sanity in a Middle East?"
"The politically correct diplomacy of American presidents throughout the generations ... is painfully naive."

GENEVA — A U.N. investigation into the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in Gaza has found evidence that both sides committed "war crimes."
The United Nations says the investigation led by former South African judge Richard Goldstone concluded that "Israel committed actions amounting to war crimes, possibly crimes against humanity," during its Dec. 27-Jan. 18 military operations in the Palestinian territories.
The global body said the report released Tuesday "concludes there is also evidence that Palestinian armed groups committed war crimes, as well as possibly crimes against humanity," by firing rockets into southern Israel.
Israel refused to cooperate with the investigation, saying the U.N. Human Rights Council that ordered it was biased against the Jewish state.

RAMALLAH, West Bank (Reuters) - Israeli troops detained 10 Hamas politicians from the occupied West Bank on Thursday in what the Islamist faction called a punitive round-up following Israel's failure to retrieve a captive soldier.
Egyptian efforts to mediate the release of Gilad Shalit, held incommunicado by Hamas in the Gaza Strip since June 2006, collapsed this week when the Israelis ruled out its demand of amnesty for scores of jailed Palestinians militant chiefs.
The impasse prompted a pledge by Israel to press the crippling Gaza blockade, as well as threats to toughen up conditions for some of the 11,000 Palestinians in its prisons.
Thursday's detainees included 4 lawmakers from Hamas, which won a Palestinian election in early 2006 but was shunned by the West for rejecting peace with the Jewish state. Mahmoud Abbas, the U.S.-backed Palestinian president, dissolved a government alliance with Hamas when it seized control of Gaza in 2007.
"Israel's arrests of Hamas leaders and lawmakers in the West Bank is an attempt to blackmail the resistance and achieve gains in the prisoner case," Hamas said in a statement.
"It shows the bankruptcy of the enemy. We call on the resistance factions to stick to their conditions in any prisoner exchange that will be discussed."

GAZA (Reuters) - Hamas vowed Monday to rearm in defiance of any Israeli and international efforts to prevent the Islamist militant group from replenishing its arsenal of rockets and other weapons after the Gaza war.
"Do whatever you want. Manufacturing the holy weapons is our mission and we know how to acquire weapons," Abu Ubaida, a spokesman for Hamas's armed wing, told a news conference.
Addressing journalists with his face masked by a checkered Arab scarf, he said "all options would be open" if Israel failed to pull its troops out of the Gaza Strip within a week, a demand raised by Hamas when it announced Sunday a ceasefire after three weeks of fighting.
Israel, which has declared its own ceasefire, has threatened to renew military action if Hamas tries to smuggle more weapons into the Gaza Strip.
Israel wants Egypt to prevent arms from reaching Palestinian militants through tunnels running under the border with the Gaza Strip.
Friday, Israel signed a security accord with the United States that calls for increased information-sharing, technical assistance and the use of various U.S. "assets" to prevent weapons from getting to Hamas from air, land or sea.

LONDON (Reuters) - The United States welcomed Israel's ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and said it expected all parties to stop hostile actions immediately while the United Nations expressed relief.
Iran said the ceasefire was not enough and that Israel's military must withdraw, Turkey urged Western countries to engage with Hamas, and the pope urged the world to pray for peace in Gaza and the hundreds killed in the conflict.

Iran's Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki said the ceasefire announcement showed the "victory of the Islamic resistance and the heroic people of Gaza" against Israel, the official IRNA news agency reported.
"The mere halt in air, sea and land attacks, without the withdrawal of the (Israeli) forces from the occupied positions, would not be enough for the cessation of confrontation," Mottaki said. "It is necessary that the Zionist forces leave the occupied regions," he said, calling their presence "provocative."
Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan criticized world leaders for leaving Hamas out of the peace process, saying it was a democratically elected political party.
He also warned that the situation in Gaza could take on a very different dimension if "Western countries" did not show appropriate sensitivity toward Hamas.

Miliband: A dark moment in Gaza

Israeli air raids on Gaza come at a "very dark moment" in the Middle East peace process, UK Foreign Secretary David Miliband has told the BBC.
He said events threatened to derail attempts to build a "comprehensive peace" and to fuel radicalism.
Calling for an urgent ceasefire, he said a "terrible price" was being paid for faltering peace negotiations.
There are expectations Israel may launch a ground invasion in Gaza, as it continues a third day of air strikes.
The UN says about 100 rockets or mortars have been fired into Israel following the attacks which began on Saturday.
They came less than a week after the expiry of a six-month-long ceasefire deal with Hamas - the militant movement which controls Gaza.
'Very dangerous'
Mr Miliband told BBC Radio 4's Today programme he was concerned about the impact on the chances for achieving a peace agreement and the danger the raids would radicalise more people.
"I think this is very dangerous and a very dark moment," he said.
"We are now paying a terrible price for the slow and faltering pace of negotiations not just over the last year, probably not just over the last 15 years - and it is the fundamental need for a comprehensive settlement that is the only way to resolve this in the interests of the Palestinians or the Israelis."
He said any "innocent loss of life" was "unacceptable" and continued calls for a ceasefire.
He said while some people in Gaza were "sick" of Hamas, there were plenty of Palestinians prepared to believe they had to fight "an eye for an eye".
The authority of Palestinian Authority president Mahmoud Abbas had to be reinforced, he added.
"Everyone wants both sides to stop and everyone wants those with influence to use that influence to put a stop to this," he said, adding the dangers for both Palestinians and Israelis were "very, very large".
Palestinian medics say 300 people have so far been killed and nearly 1,000 injured. Two Israelis have died in militant rocket fire and several injured by missiles fired from Gaza.
Israel says the aim of the strikes is to stop rockets and missiles being launched on the southern part of Israel.
The exiled leader of Hamas, Khaled Meshaal, has called for a new intifada, or uprising, against Israel, while its leader in Gaza, Ismail Haniya, called the Israeli attacks an "ugly massacre".

Israeli Pensioner Affairs Minister Says Israel Should Kidnap Ahmadinejad
The Israeli pensioner affairs minister, Rafi Eitan, who was a former top operative for Mossad told Der Spiegel that if Israeli officers are kidnapped then Israeli should do likewise. He then went on to say that Israel should kidnap Iranian President Ahmadinejad and bring him to trial in The Hague.
Not a bad idea but I don't know how much influence a minister of pensioner affairs has over Israel's security apparatus. Haaretz
Needless to say, the Iranians didn't take kindly to Eitan's rhetoric and complained to the UN.
"Kidnapping enemy leaders is a legitimate method used by states to combat threats to their existence," Eitan said. "A man like Ahmadinejad who threats the existence of the state of Israel and is also preparing for it is worthy of being brought before the international court in The Hague even if it is by means of abduction. Abductions still occur. It is a fact that the Americans do it all the time when they kidnap Al-Qaida operatives in Iraq quietly and without any fanfare and bring them to trial."
"[Abductions] are done throughout the free world," Eitan said. "Abductions allow for room to maneuver. Just like we kidnapped the senior Hezbollah figure Mustafa Dirani - which enabled us to trade him in exchange for our people."
The minister also reacted to a recent spate of reports indicating that senior army officers have been warned they are potential targets for abduction by Hezbollah.
"The moment they carry out their threats against us and kidnap our army officers, the response needs to be counter-kidnapping of their army officers of the same rank," Eitan told Haaretz on Tuesday.In a letter to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon, the ambassador Mohammad Khazee said Mr Eitan's remarks reflected Israel's "aggressive and terrorist nature", Iran's Irna news agency reported.
So I guess all those veiled threats made against Israel by Ahmadinejad fall outside of the UN's charter.
"These dangerous threats of resorting to criminal acts against the officials of a sovereign country, or threatening to use force against a member of the United Nations not only constitute manifest violations of international law and contravene the most fundamental principles of the Charter of the United Nations, but are against the basic values of the civilised world," he said.
