All the money generated from the sale of opium, used to produce heroin, is going to fund the taliban. In fact the crop is so important to the taliban that they're willing to fight and die for it. According to a document from the State department opium production in Afghanistan is at a record high.
Opium isn't the only drug the taliban sell. It is also worth while to point out that the drug trade that has funded the taliban and other terrorists started before the Afghan war in 2001.

WASHINGTON — Record illegal drug production in Afghanistan supplies the Taliban insurgency with money and arms and the U.S.-backed government must take direct, prompt action against poppy growers, a State Department report said Friday.
Afghan farmers grew more poppies for opium in 2007 than ever before, the second year in a row of record production in the nation the United States invaded after the Sept. 11, 2001 terror attacks. The drug trade deters progress toward a stable, economically independent democracy, the report said.The International Narcotics Control Strategy Report cited strong links between the narcotics trade and the anti-government insurgency. The largest and best-known insurgent group -- the hard-line Taliban -- benefits with money and weapons while offering protection to growers and traffickers, the report said.
"Eliminating narcotics cultivation and trafficking in Afghanistan will require a long-term national and international commitment," the State Department said.
"The Afghan government must take decisive action against poppy cultivation soon to turn back the drug threat before its further growth and consolidation make it even more difficult to defeat."

Michael Yon has been writing on this subject for a very, very long time. Instead of food crops, opium crops are grown.
It scares the hell out of me to think what our troops are exposed to and the fact that that product makes it way to the US, and you have to guess that the farmers are not real cooperative when it is their livelihood, and then to top it all - those $'s fund the taliban which means drug users here in the US help fund the taliban!
Is our government just now realizing this or just now willing to give it some media attention because it has gotten to the abscess point? There is something seriously WRONG with this picture!
Ya there is something terribly wrong with all of this. A lot of the heroin goes to Europe as well. I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of it goes through the Balkans.
It's a perfect crop for the taliban. They sell this junk to us making money and basically poisoning us. Two birds with one stone.
The government/military must be cognizant of all this. But they're afraid of a pissing off some afghan farmers who grow this s**t.
