The fighting in Swat broke out when militants ambushed a security patrol, a military official said.

"Four of our soldiers have been martyred while we killed 35 militants and damaged several of their hideouts," said Major Nasir Ali, from the military's information department.

Earlier, a suicide bomber rammed an explosive-laden vehicle into a police station in the valley, killing at least eight policemen and wounding 10, police said.
Pakistani Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani said today that Pakistan would address the 'root causes' of the increasing violence in the North Western Provinces (aka talistan). He listed the root causes as poverty and unemployment. Ya...right, the root cause surely isn't waging jihad in order to establish shariah/islamic law. AFP....
He said that the government was addressing the root cause of militancy and suicide attacks, identifying poverty, unemployment and lack of basic healthcare and education facilities as the main reasons behind the unrest.

"We are working for the economic uplift and development of the tribal areas," he said.

Gilani urged all political parties and religious groups and people at large to join forces to fight the menace of terrorism and said that the militants were a tiny minority in Pakistan.
