The High Court of Justice yesterday rejected a petition demanding that it strip former MK Azmi Bishara (Balad) of both his citizenship and his pension.

Bishara fled the country after police announced that he was suspected of having given information to Hezbollah before and during the Second Lebanon War in 2006. As a result, he cannot be brought to trial and still enjoys a legal presumption of innocence. In June, therefore, Danny Danon, who heads the international Likud organization, asked the court to strip Bishara of his MK's pension and his citizenship. He also asked the court to order the fugitive tried in absentia.
