NEW DELHI (AFP) — Indian police shot dead two Islamic militants during a fierce gun battle in a Muslim area of New Delhi Friday, officials said, less than a week after the capital was rocked by bombings.

The fighting erupted around a house in Jamia Nagar, in the south of the capital, when police acting on a tip-off came across a group of around five militants holed up in a building in the area's maze of narrow streets.

"A special cell team came here to do some checking based on some information. Some elements here began firing, the special cell also fired back," said deputy police commissioner, H.G.S. Dhaliwal.

The exchange of fire lasted an hour.
