Taliban Demand Shariah Law in Pakistan

The taliban in the SWAT Valley region of Pakistan have promised to stop fighting if the Pakistani government implements shariah law in the region. The taliban's demands for the implementation of shariah law highlights the fact that they do not fight because of poverty or poor education, they fight for islamic law. The only thing is the taliban did not specify whom they would stop fighting with. You can bet that they'll still cross the border with Afghanistan to fight NATO forces stationed in Afghanistan.

PESHAWAR: Militants operating under the command of Maulana Fazlullah in Swat valley on Friday offered to abandon all their militant activities if the government went ahead with its plans to enforce Shariah in the erstwhile Malakand division.

NWFP Chief Minister Ameer Haider Khan Hoti on Thursday said the provincial government was gearing up for the promulgation of the Shariah Laws in seven districts of the defunct Malakand division during the Holy month of Ramazan.

"We have launched this armed uprising for the enforcement of true Shariah and have been fighting this war for forcing the government to enforce Shariah. If it is implemented, we have no other purpose to continue our armed struggle and will certainly give up militancy in the valley," spokesman for the Swat chapter of the banned Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), Muslim Khan, told The News from an undisclosed location.
