At least 100 dead in India terror attacks

A group called the Deccan Mujahideen has claimed responsibility for the audacious attack on India's finicial capital Mumbai. However, the group is affiliated with SIMI, Student Islamic Movement of India, which is well known within India. SIMI has been responsible for at least two high profile attacks this year which include the July 26th attacks in Ahmedabad and the September 13th attack in New Delhi.

Tensions between SIMI and the Indian government have been growing since SIMI was outlawed earlier this year however the ban was lifted by the Indian supreme court. It shouldn't have been a surprise that an attack was going to take place but the scope and brazen attack was surprising.International Herald Tribune

MUMBAI: Indian police commandos rescued some hostages on Thursday as standoffs continued against heavily armed militants who a day earlier had swept into Mumbai, India's commercial capital, in a shocking series of coordinated and bloody attacks.

The hooded gunmen, firing automatic weapons and throwing hand grenades, attacked at least two luxury hotels, the city's largest train station, a Jewish center, a movie theater, even a hospital.

The Mumbai police said Thursday afternoon that the attacks killed at least 101 people and wounded at least 314.

Even by the standards of terrorism in India, which has suffered a rising number of attacks this year, the assaults were particularly brazen in scale, coordination and execution.
