US Senators urge Obama to rethink Pakistan aid

$12 billion in aid to Pakistan since 2002 aimed at helping Pakistan fight the taliban and al Qaida in the tribal regions. Instead of seeing a reduction in threat posed by the taliban and al Qaida from Pakistan it has actually increased significantly.

Thats why a group of US Senators are urging the Obama administration to rethink US aid policy towards Pakistan. What has Pakistan done with the $12 billion meant to fight the taliban? Definitely wasn't used to fight the taliban. In fact, some of that money actually went to the taliban. Good to have allies like Pakistan. WA Today

US SENATORS have called for a rethink on aid to Pakistan after a watchdog said more than $US12 billion in US aid had failed to eliminate the country's militant haven.

The call came as the foreign ministers of Pakistan and Afghanistan started talks in Washington with the Obama Administration on how to combat extremism.

The Government Accountability Office, the investigative arm of Congress, found the US has spent $US12.3 billion ($A19.14 billion) since 2002 aiming to end the terrorist threat on Pakistan's border with Afghanistan.

"Despite six years of US and Pakistani Government efforts, al-Qaeda has regenerated its ability to attack the United States and continues to maintain a safe haven in Pakistan's FATA (Federally Administered Tribal Areas)," it said.
