China unveils fleet of nuclear submarines in 'naval olympics'

In a calculated display of its growing military might China is staging a massive naval review Thursday in the choppy waters of the Yellow Sea, off the coast of the historic port city of Qingdao.

Chinese newspapers have already dubbed the event a "Naval Olympics ... that sets the benchmark of China's naval strength."

In addition to publicly displaying its fleet of nuclear powered submarines for the very first time, the People's Liberation Army Navy will stage a major sail past of ships from its three naval fleets and a fly past of PLA Navy aircraft.[...]

Just last week, Admiral Wu Shengli, China's top naval officer, said China needs to acquire more high-tech weapons "in order to boost the ability to fight in regional sea wars."
He means Taiwan
