April 29 (Bloomberg) -- Pakistan’s military killed 50 militants in an operation to oust Taliban guerillas from the northwestern Buner district who used civilians as human shields.
One soldier died and three were injured in fighting as troops in helicopter gunships halted an advance by militants beyond their Swat Valley stronghold, army spokesman Athar Abbas told reporters in Rawalpindi. Security forces released 18 out of 70 personnel who had been detained, he said.
Taliban forces earlier this month took advantage of a peace accord in Swat to challenge government authority in neighboring districts. Clashes between troops and militants threaten to end a three-month-old peace accord that allowed the Taliban to impose Sharia, or Islamic law, in seven districts.
“We are honoring the peace accord,” said Muslim Khan, a spokesman for the Taliban in Swat, a previously popular tourist resort. “It appears the government isn’t honoring its commitment by bombing areas in Buner.”
