SWAT deal gives taliban immunity

Today the SWAT region of Pakistan gets shariah law. It's only a matter of time before the whole of Pakistan is ruled by shariah law. A cleric who helped mediated the "peace deal" said that imposing shariah law will give immunity to the taliban accused of brutal murders.

What kind of brutal murders could that include? Beheadings, executions, burned by acid all in the name of islamic law.

The taliban didn't waste any time in enforcing shariah law. The taliban gunned down two lovers, who tried to elope, in front of a mosque.

SLAMABAD (AP) — Pakistan's imposition of Islamic law to blunt a gathering Taliban rebellion will protect militants accused of brutal killings from prosecution, a hardline cleric who mediated the peace plan said Tuesday.[...]

President Asif Ali Zardari approved plans to introduce Islamic law, or Sharia, in Swat and nearby areas of the northwest on Monday under mounting domestic pressure on his pro-Western government.[...]

But critics worry that it rewards hard-liners who have beheaded political opponents and burned scores of schools for girls in the name of Islam — and that it will encourage similar demands in other parts of the nuclear-armed country.
