Mexican drug cartel violence to spread to US

"It's coming. I guarantee, it's coming,"...Drug cartel violence in the US.

Officials from the DEA are worried that the violence in Mexico, due to the drug cartels, could spread to the US because the Sinaloa cartel has ordered its members to use lethal force against rival cartels, Mexican authorities, and U.S. law enforcement officials.

Other developments that DEA officials worry about is the take over of the Gulf Cartel, a major player in smuggling drugs to the US, by the Los Zetas a paramilitary group of turncoat soldiers and anti-narcotics police. The DEA believes that most of the violence due to the drug cartels in the US can be attributed to the Los Zetas.

Good thing the Los Zetas is now training its members at a Texas ranch. CNN

"No other country in the world has a greater impact on the drug situation in the United States than Mexico does," said Arabit, who heads the DEA's office in this year's border hot spot, El Paso, Texas. See where Mexican cartels are in the U.S.

A December 2008 report by the Justice Department's National Drug Intelligence Center revealed that Mexican drug traffickers can be found in more than 230 U.S. cities.

So far, the U.S. has largely been spared the violence seen in Mexico, where the cartels' running gunbattles with police, the military and each other claimed about 6,500 lives last year. It was a sharp spike from the 2,600 deaths attributed to cartel violence in 2007.

Once again, drug war casualties are mounting on the Mexican side at a record pace in 2009 -- more than 1,000 during the first three months of the year, Arabit said.[...]

The status and alliances of the players continue to shift. Although the DEA and some analysts disagree, others say the Zetas, a paramilitary group of turncoat soldiers and anti-narcotics police, are now running the Gulf cartel.

"From what we've seen, the Zetas have taken over the Gulf cartel," analyst Stewart said. "In violent times, soldiers tend to rise to the top."

There are very few, if any citizens of Mexico carrying guns so the risk of a "running gun battle" is less than it would be in the US where there is always the wild card of the armed citizen.

That's not exactly true: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/2199138/posts

Most normal, otherwise law abiding people DO have guns in Mexico, flying in the face of the "law". These guns, most likely, are the ones coming from the USA. Most of the victims however seem to be the helpless, unlucky, ignorant and unprepared (Think Katrina victims).

Now that the Zetas are running the show, we might see a whole new dimension to the violence... scary... My prayers are with those people.

A .50 on every hill, claymores in every valley; we need to give the Border Patrol what they need.

Yabbut, the Mexicans are afraid to use their guns because they don't want to have to pay humongous bribes to the cops. They end up with the same problem we will have in the US if we bury our guns to keep the feds from stealing them.

A gun underground is no use.
