Troops go after final Taleban

Eight weeks ago the Taliban completely controlled the Swat valley , now they are almost eradicated from the area , If the Pakistani military can hold them off , this will be a big slap in the face of the Taliban.

Straits Times
CHUPRIAL (Pakistan) - PAKISTANI military officials say troops are going after the last pockets of Taleban fighters in the Swat Valley as an even tougher battle gets under way in the tribal belt along the Afghanistan border.

Artillery fire was pounding militant positions in the Biha valley, in the upper Swat region, as an intense operation there started Friday night and continued into Saturday.

Maj. Gen. Sajjad Ghani, who is in control of efforts to clear the northern Swat valley, says 95 per cent of Swat has been cleared and that most of the last resistance is in Biha, a short valley that backs into snow-covered mountains that are limiting the Taleban's efforts to flee.

He says about 400 militants have been killed in the area over the past six weeks.
