EL PASO - The body of man was retrieved from a canal along the Rio Grande Thursday afternoon near the Chamizal.
The man had not been identified and appeared to have been in the water for a few days, said Lt. Mario Hernandez, a spokesman for the El Paso Fire Department.
A Fire Department water rescue team was dispatched about 1 p.m. after Border Patrol agents spotted the body floating in canal waters, which are high at this time of year.
It is not uncommon for undocumented immigrants to drown in area canals while trying to sneak across the border.
