TOKYO — The United States will discuss with Japan ways to boost the nuclear deterrent it provides to protect its close ally, a US envoy was quoted as saying as tensions continue with North Korea.
The issue will be on the official agenda for the first time at a meeting of senior US and Japanese officials on Saturday, Kurt Campbell, assistant secretary of state for East Asia and Pacific affairs, told the Nikkei daily.[...]
Campbell arrived in Japan on Thursday for talks with Japanese Foreign Minister Hirofumi Nakasone and other high-level officials that are expected to focus on North Korea's nuclear and missile tests.
