Michigin town approves transfer of Gitmo detainess

Where are the NIMBY protests? Politico

The city council of Standish, Mich., voted 6-0 on Monday in support of a resolution that signals the city’s willingness to proceed with the idea of transferring detainees from the military prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, to their sparsely populated Midwestern town.

Standish is home to Standish Maximum Correctional Facility, a state prison that was opened in 1990 but is scheduled to be closed at the end of October due to budget cuts. Many local and state officials, concerned about the revenue void they expect the prison’s closure to leave, have lobbied to keep the prison open by any means necessary – including taking detainees currently being held at Guantanamo Bay, the controversial military prison that President Barack Obama has vowed to close by January 2010.
Does greed know no bounds?
