US troops landing on Omaha beach on June 6th, 1944.
D-Day, aka Operation Overlord, and Operation Neptune, was the largest amphibious invasion ever undertaken. Over 160,000 American, British, and Canadian soldiers took part in the invasion force. 
The landings took place on across 50 miles of Normandy coast, the Americans had Utah, and Omaha sectors, the British Gold, and Sword, while the Canadians took Juno beach.
