SALISBURY -- Today is the national celebration of Flag Day, which observes the adoption of the American flag as the country's official symbol. Though not an official federal holiday, many communities hold Flag Day celebrations, and citizens are usually urged by the president to fly an American flag for the duration of the week. There have been more than 28 versions of the American flag, and plans have been made for designs to incorporate up to 56 stars.
