Afghan forces aided by U.S. troops and aircraft have repelled a Taliban attack on a government centre in the country's east.

About 100 insurgents carried out the attack, and more than 50 of them were killed, authorities claimed Sunday.

Two Afghan police also died, with four others wounded.

Militants attacked the government centre from four directions, said Arsallah Jamal, the province's governor.

NATO said the troops called for air support and got it in the form of heavy machine gun fire from helicopters.

"Some insurgents attempted to take cover in a nearby building that helicopters then struck with missiles," it said in a statement. "The number of insurgents killed is in double-digit figures."

Some of the attackers fled into Pakistan.
