Khawaja sentenced to 10 and a half years

Khawaja has been sentenced to jail for 10 and half years for his role in a UK fertilizer bomb plot linked to al-Qaeda. Khawaja worked as a computer contract worker for Foreign Affairs Canada sent emails to his terrorist colleagues in Britain.

In one email Khawaja stated “Praise the most high, we got the devices working. I am gonna try and get a booking asap to come over and see you,” which referred to the bomb detonator Khawaja designed for the terrorist plot.

Ten and a half years with chance of parole in 5 years is way too little. Do you really think that this guy won't return to jihad after he is released? Just look at all the released Gitmo detainees who went back to jihad, in fact the number may be higher than you thought.Globe & Mail

The 29-year-old Pakistani-Canadian who built a detonator for a British cell of al-Qaeda-inspired extremists was sentenced under Canada's controversial Anti-Terrorism Act, passed just months after the 9/11 attacks in the United States.

Observers had been anticipating a life sentence for Mr. Khawaja, who had been before Canadian courts for five years, as his case frequently bogged down in preliminary matters. For years, judges in various courts wrestled with implications of the anti-terror law and the international investigation against Mr. Khawaja prior to his trial starting last summer.

But the trial itself was a relatively speedy affair and concluded in six months. Nearly all of the Crown evidence against the suspect went unchallenged into the court record. Mr. Khawaja had little to offer in his defence: The investigation against him amounted to a rare textbook case of counterterrorism co-operation by British, American and Canadian agents, who managed to accomplish the rare feat of converting secret intelligence leads into evidence publicly produced in court.
